PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
We are entering a busy time of the year. Very busy! It’s field trip and track season. There are
swimming lessons and bowling trips. We have classes gardening and others off to the public library.
There is the small matter of a whole-school musical at the Port Theatre and somewhere in there we
need to plan for bringing this year to a close and beginning a brand new one next September with all
these great kids in the right place. With all that said we ask that you please stay in touch and keep a
close eye on the school calendar. We will always update you with any changes or new events. All
class trips and special days will be publicized as much as we can. You can help support your child
and his/her teacher during the next two busy months by simply visiting our school website. Thank you.

put our class lists together more accurately.

and 12 squared off in a battle of medieval
proportions. The students then took the results,
analyzed and graphed them in a number of
math activities. Well done everyone and thank
you to the organizers and volunteers.
SCIENCE MONTH
Back by popular demand, June will be Science
month in the library. Students will be able to get
down and dirty with science each week in June.
All science experiences will be quick and simple
projects the students can do at home during the
summer and require ingredients found in most
homes and kitchens. Mme Sullivan wishes to
make science fun and engaging to all students
from K-7 to promote an interest in engineering
and natural sciences. Currently, fewer students
are enrolling in university science programs and
this trend is creating a skills shortage in
Canada.
HEALTHY EATING THIS MONTH
This "frittata" was a hit today in Mme. Zoe’s
class; the kids enjoyed and ate the whole tray.
We have eaten 520 pieces of a fruit, veggie or
protein for the month of April! Our count last
month was 498 pieces. We are trying to up the
amounts every month. I am so very proud of
the children and their parents, as they have
jumped on board with my program right away.
Keep up the good work and eating habits. (<:

A MONTH OF MINDFULNESS
Mindful May in the Library
Quarterway's teacher librarian Dominique
Sullivan has been a yoga instructor and
mindfulness educator for the past 11 years.
Mindfulness boost happiness and helps
children deal with stress, worry, and sleep
issues. Here are Seven things mindful people
do differently by PhD. Elisha Goldstein
1. Approach everyday things with curiosity
and savor them
2. Forgive their mistakes big or small
3. Show gratitude for good moments and
grace for bad ones
4. Practice compassion and nurture
connections
5. Make peace with imperfection inside and
out.
6. Embrace of vulnerability by trusting
others and themselves.
7. Accept and appreciate that things come
and go
All students from kindergarten to grade 7 will
receive lessons in mindfulness and try yoga
in order to foster a happy healthy school for
students to learn, live and grow!
DRESS CODE
As we near our much-anticipated sunny spring
weather, we remind students and parents to
review the school's dress code policy. School
is an educational and work based institution. It
is expected that all those who share our space
wear clothing that is appropriate to a school
setting. All students are expected to adhere to
the
Quarterway
Dress
Code
Policy.
Appropriate clothing includes but is not
exclusive of the following:
 shorts, skirts and dresses which reach at
least mid-thigh
 "tops" which meet "bottoms"
 shoes which can be walked in safely
Clothing which is considered inappropriate in a
school setting includes but is not exclusive to:
 spaghetti straps
 undergarments which are exposed
(including bra straps)
 tops which expose the midriff
 low-cut clothing
 pants which are sagging below the hips
Students who do not wear appropriate clothing
to school will be asked to change into
appropriate attire.
SCHOOL MUSICAL
On May 21st, all of our students will be on
stage at the Port Theatre. There will be a
matinee at 12:30 that day and at 6:30 in the
evening. What an incredible opportunity!
Please make sure your child is at both
performances. Each child will play a vital role
in both shows. Tickets are now available.

Please check our website for more details on
how to get yours. Watch for a note home soon
with very important details about costumes and
other odds and ends.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
Our campaign has begun. Please note this
fundraiser is a 100% voluntary activity. We do
not want families or children to feel they must
participate. These kinds of initiatives are not for
everyone and we want you to feel free to make
the decision that works best for your family.
Please see our website and the pink letter we
sent home for more details.
PARENT APPRECIATION TEA
Join us in our gym June 16 from 2:00-3:00 PM
and let us thank you for all you do. From
guided reading volunteers and gardeners to
pizza helpers and help in the library. We would
not have such a wonderful place to learn if it
were not for you. Come on out for some light
refreshments and a kind word. See you there.
WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN
This year, on June 9 from 9:00 – 11:00 AM, we
will treat our new Kindergarten families to this
wonderful event. WTK is a program that aims to
welcome our new families to Quarterway and to
help their new Ks feel comfortable with the
school they will soon attend. The kids spend the
morning rotating through stations like playdough, letters and numbers, and story time.
Invitations were mailed to families on April 17.
B-BALL SEASON WRAPS UP
Our Bantam Girls won second place in the
district. Great job ladies! Thank you to all
coaches and sponsors.
SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD MEET
Check out some pictures on page 4 of our
school meet. The kids had a great time and
each and every one of them did their very best.
It was so much fun to see all those smiling
faces and rosy cheeks.
Way to go and
congratulations to all zone qualifiers. Thanks
so much to Mr. Matte and his amazing crew of
volunteers for all their hard work in making this
event a success. Our zone meet is May 28th at
the Rotary Bowl.
NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY
The Quarterway Library continues to evolve
and change to meet the student’s learning
needs with the purchase of new chairs and
Chromebooks for the Library Learning
commons. As our school grows each year,
our library continues to support literacy,
inquiry and innovation. 18,145 books have
been check out from the Quarterway library
this year. The excitement regarding literacy
continues to build through various reading
challenges and field trips to the new North
Nanaimo Public Library. Students in Mme.
Nielsen’s, Mme Sigal’s and Mme Isabelle’s
classes will receive a private session with the
children’s librarian from the VIRL to explore a
variety of book formats including print books,
ebooks and audiobooks. Quarterway has a
strong culture of reading! Keep it UP!
