ROUTE OF ENTRY
Eyes:
Liquid or mist contact may cause irritation.
Inhalation
Mist may cause irritation of respiratory tract, coughing may occour. Inhalation of large amounts of mist may
cause systemic effects (see ingestion). Contact with acids may cause evolution of N2O3 which can cause
severe and potentially fatal effects.
Skin:
Ingestion:
Liquid or mist contact may cause irritation. Sodium Nitrite has been infrequently associated with kin
sensitization in humans.
May irritate gastrointestinal tract - larger amounts may cause poisoning. Large doses:
conversion of hemoglobin to methemoglobin, producing cycanosis (blue skin); marked
fall in blood pressure, leading to collapse, coma, and possibly death.
SECTION 04: FIRSTAID
Skin Contact:
Eye Contact:
Inhalation, Acute
Ingestion:
Flush skin with plenty of water while removing contaminated clothing. Clean clothing before reuse.
Immediately flush eyes with water while holding eyelids open. If irritation persists, get medical
attention.
Immeciately remove to fresh air. If victim is not breathing, give artificial respiration. Get promt
medical attention.
If conscious give 2 to 4 glasses of water, and induce vomiting by touching finger to back of throat.
Continue until vomit fluid is clear. Get immediate medical attention. If cyanosis (blue skin) develops,
give oxygen, provided a qualified operator is available.

SECTION 06: ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Leak and Spill Procedure: Personel with proper protective equipment should dike and contain spill. Avoid contact with
incompatible materials. Remove to containers for disposal/recovery. Foar small spills, cover
with any inert absorbent and shovel into clean containers.
SECTION 07: HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling Procedures and Storage Requirements
Protect from physical damage. Store in a warm place, away from combustible materials and wooden floors. Keep tightly
closed. Material decomposes even by weak acids with evolution of brown fumes of N2O3. It is slowly oxideized to sodium
nitrate when exposed to air. May be fatal if directly ingested (the Adult leathal dose id approximately 2-5 grams).
Breathing mistmay cause irritation of respiratory tract. Liquid or mist contact with skin eyes may cause irritation. Ingestion
can cause irritation to gastrointestianal tract. Large doses can cause death.
Do not take internally. Avoid breathing mist. Use with Adequate ventilation. Avoiud contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
Wash throughly after handling.
SECTION 08: PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT / EXPOSURE CONTROLS
GLOVES/TYPE:
Impervious chemical resistant gloves.
EYE/TYPE:
Chemical splash goggles.
RESPIRATOR/TYPE:
OTHER/TYPE:
ENGINEERING CONTROL
A NIOSH/MSHA respirator for dust or mist - or nitrogen oxide gases - as a pplicable. Some
expousers may requier a NIOSH approved, self contained breathing apparatus or an air
supplied respirator.
For prolunged or repeated contact, wear full, imperivous clothing. Provide eye wash fountaiin
and safety shower.

SECTION 10: STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
CHEMICALLY STABLE? Yes
IF NO, UNDER WHICH CONDITIONS?
INCOMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER SUBTANCES
Yes
IF YES, WITH WHICH ONES: Reducing agents, e.g. Cyanides, thiocyanates, thiosulfates, ammonium salts, cause
vigorous reactions, somethimes explosive. Some combustibles and organics and waterreactive substances, such as oleum, cause exothermic reactions. See Handling and

Storage.
SPECIAL REACTIVITY AND UNDER WHAT CONDITIONS Heat sepecially heating to dryness, increases the pobability
and the nazard of oxidizing reactions.
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: If evaporated, the residue is a dangerous fire risk when heated to 1,000
F and may explode. This residue is alsolikely to yeild on heating, toxic
brown fumes or nitrogen oxides. These are corrosive and oxidizing.
