The art of not being seen
Concealment has always played a part in warfare, but during WW1 it became systematic. Discover some
camouflage techniques that were borrowed from the natural world and adapted for theatres of war.
Hide and seek
Test your powers of observation with this interactive camouflage board!
Can you camouflage?
Make and camouflage your own periscope, then test your creation by spying in the trenches.
Try technologies in
the trenches
Explore the trenches and discover the different technologies that soldiers used to communicate secretly
and keep an eye on the enemy. Can you break a code.... spot clues in No Man’s Land.... hear what the
other side is up to?
A soldier’s kit
Britain’s troops were the best equipped of any during WWI, but across No Man's Land lay an army that was
very similar – and very different. Get to grips with the equipment of both the British and the Imperial German
infantryman and compare their kit.
Life-saving technologies
Learn WWI first aid and find out how the Royal Army Medical Corps cared for the wounded behind the trenches
and in hospitals like the one in Pollok House.

hear about aerial observation during
WW1, the clues that would give you
positions away and techniques for
avoiding detection.
History teacher Dave Clarke and
Scots in the Great War comrades
explain and demonstrate WW1
technology – from guns to gas to
gallopers – plus the secret winning
technology (it’s not what you might
think!).
