Assessment of formal and non-formal skills

Assessment of formal and non-formal skills - realkompetansevurdering
The term realkompetanse refers to all formal, non-formal and informal learning and skills,
which adults have acquired through the education system, paid and unpaid work,
organisational activities, etc.
Please note that assessment of non-formal skills is done in relation to the curriculum for
Lower and Upper Secondary School courses. The Directorate of Education has a full overview
of the curriculum at www.udir.no - in Norwegian.
Adults who have a right to Lower and Upper Secondary Education (grunnskole &
videregående opplæring) also have a right to an assessment of skills.
Why realkompetansevurdering?
In the education system, documentation of non-formal skills may replace formal schooling,
and thus shorten the duration of formal secondary school training towards a diploma or
trade certificate. Documentation of non-formal skills may improve job opportunities, or a
change of tasks and duties in the workplace.
Upper Secondary level (videregående): How is the assessment done?
You apply through Oslo VO Servicesenter. You can download the application form and an
application guide at Videregående og realkompetansevurdering here. (Link coming soon)
The assessment process starts with a dialogue-based assessment interview where your
background and experience is charted. If you want an assessment of skills in vocational
training, there is usually also a practical assessment: yrkesprøving.
The assessment of skills in relation to Upper Secondary level curriculum is carried out by
Oslo VO Sinsen.
