We read a big book about Australia Day because the author told us lots of information about who lives in our country and what we celebrate, and where we can go to see wonderful places.. When we read the first pages we think “Hey, we can change a word to match the day we are celebrating now”. So we take out the word Australia and replace it with Harmony “Australia opens its doors to people of many cultures.” During our viewing of the globe we see Australia has ocean all the way around it. It is an island as well as a continent. On our maps we use strips of blue crepe paper dabbed with water to make the colour seep out all the way around the Australia outline. It is tricky work to make sure the ocean doesn’t go on the land and that the strips have enough water for the magic to work. Inside the country outline pictures of people are drawn. They come from many different families as they all have different coloured skin. The doors are done separately. Exercises of straight lines down and sideways are completed around the frame with a water based texta. Water is also painted over the lines to make the colour ‘bleed’ onto the door outline. Some of us dress in a costume that connects us with our family background or country of origin. Some of us dress using the colour of orange. The word harmony has seven letters. We learnt about number 7. It is written with one pencil stroke. It has two straight lines, one is sideways and one is down on a slant. The two lines are joined by a point (corner). Red Group students covered the first four letters in harmony. Blue Group students covered the remaining three. 4+3=7 Now the seven letters are orange. Orange is the colour of harmony. Harmony has three syllables. Har/mo/ny It is considered a long word.
