What I'm Reading - Karla Buckborough
Cavan Monaghan Libraries
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Composed as a novel, this book reads more like
a series of short stories. The story begins in
Ghana (British Gold Coast) and chronicles 8
generations of a family stemming from a
common matriarch.
Unknown to each other, half-sisters have very
different lives: one sister remains in Africa while
the other is captured and taken in the slavetrade to America.
The chapters in the novel alternate between the
families in Africa and those in America.
While the slave life in America was an awful
experience, this book also suggests that life in
Ghana was not easy either.
Because there are 16 main characters the book
could become very confusing. Luckily the author
has included a family tree chart. I referred to it
frequently while reading the book.

One of my book club members suggested a map
of Africa would have also been useful. I did
google the locations and looked at images of the
"Cape Coast Castle" referred to in the book.
This book is very
different than "The Book
of Negroes" but the two
could be read as
interesting study.
