Innovative and ambitious. A new
era.
CELF hosted a well attended event on 22 May to celebrate a move to
our new premises, the former Drama Centre in Llandrindod Wells.
Phillip Bowen, the High Sheriff of Powys got things off to a great
start by introducing a pop-up performance by the Powys dance
group Me, Myself and Us.

ʻ‘It was fabulous to see our regular collaborators occupying their
new home and wonderful to be asked to help them launch in style.
The multiple, flexible spaces within the building will be well used by
the creative practitioners and participants of CELF projects. I am
looking forward to seeing what plans they hatch next from their
new HQ’.

Powys Dance Manager
The studio was used to show a film by Sean Burn – sabled 2'40”, 2013, an
experimental cut-up playing on the word disabled as visual poetry and spoken
word and a part of how the artist spent time as artist and mentor in residence
with CELF in December last year. Originally premiered at Datarama, Newcastle
upon Tyne in January 2014, it is also available for download here. The newly
created gallery space showcased paintings and photography in an inaugural
exhibition Simon McAuley: Light Space. The acrylic paintings made especially
for this show develop McAuley’s interest in painting from a reduced approach,
a practice where colour and application of paint became the primary focus for
the work. The wires or lines, were masked off, painted and then revealed. This

allowed for a repeatable device or method for the paint to become embedded
within and the painting to emerge from the composition. The paintings form a
record of their own creation. Seen in parallel with McAuley’s photographs in
which the constraining edges of the frame provide a focus for the processes of
looking, both paintings and photographs form a relationship despite employing
what might at first seem divergent approaches. Simon McAuley was artist-inresidence at CELF in July 2013, in an Arts Council of Wales’ funded partnership
project with Glasgow-based Project Ability. McAuley is a member of their
ReConnect project, an art studio for people with mental health conditions that
provides people with space, time, materials and expert tuition to develop their
artistic practice.
‘Celf is delighted to take on such a resource which will enable us to
take our artistic reach further, feeding our ambition to work with
more artists and participants across all art forms’.
Shân Edwards
Director of CELF
CELF recently upscaled their organisation to a new location and the launch was
able to showcase every element of our new space to maximum potential as part
of Powys Arts Month.
‘Powys County Council's Arts Service is supportive of CELF in their
new venture at the Council's former Drama Centre - a facility which
presents the organisation with a development opportunity for them
as a progressive arts organisation providing creative opportunities
in Powys. This is an exciting time for CELF, for their artist
collaborators and participants’.

The Big Lunch
We were invited to take part in the community event; The Big Lunch by Cymrhyd
Rhan. It was a gloriously sunny day and Celf o Gwmpas went 'on display'. It was a
great opportunity to showcase work done by participants, meet local people and
update them with the latest Celf news. We would like to thank Cymrhyd Rhan for
including us in their activity.

Who likes meetings?
Do your work meetings take place in dreary bland rooms which are awkward to
book and provide little inspiration but just go on and on and on and on... or you can
speak to someone lovely at Celf to hire a variety of meeting spaces; from a
performance studio to an education room to an artist workshop. We can also
provide refreshments and do our utmost to make your meetings something to look
forward to. Call us on 01597 822777 to find out how we can inspire your next
meeting space.

Meet Luzi our Intern
We have been delighted to welcome the lovely Luzi from Germany into the Celf
fold, as she works with us on a six week internship. From Zeppelin University
Friedrichshafen, Southern Germany, Luze is studying a Masters Degree
in Communication and Cultural Management. Former working experiences include
curatorial assistance, arts mediation and workshop supports. Eventually, Luzi
would appreciate working with and supporting a group of inspiring people and
share their thoughts on cultural matters. For further details on Luzi's work see her
homepage: http://bestaende.wordpress.com/.
"I learned a lot in the main areas of the cultural working sphere and
was able to assist in shaping productive rooms of culture, bringing
together artists and their work with people. I was not only involved in
content development, curating exhibitions, designing and realizing
mediating programs, but also learned about public relation,
structural and financial planning. What I always enjoyed the
most was the chance to attend a whole process from the first ideas and
their implementation into a final visualisation."

work: Sound Canvas. The exhibition will be on display until September.
" Zoe's work is about how we view our world and questions, 'What is a
canvas?' And 'Who decides it has to visual? The art work can be triggered
by everyone as it is affected by body movement so you don't need to press
a button or do any complicated interaction. The idea is to draw people to
play sounds that are familiar like laughter into making their own
individual experience by using movement."
