What’s up E-ACT? Our learning this week… Friday 10th February 2017 Year One This week in Year One we have been working really hard. In English we have been writing stories based on the book 'Lost and Found'. In math we have been learning about numbers. We have been playing games with missing numbers and completing number sequences and also have been solving lots of problems! In Topic we have been comparing Blackley to the Arctic by looking at similarities and differences and have also learnt about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We have performed our class assembly this week, the year one staff are really proud of all our hard work! Next week we will be writing recounts of the penguin's journey, solving problems using base 10 and finding out about arctic animals. Year Two This week we have been using imperative verbs to write our own set of instructions. We have been learning about the features of a set of instructions. This is all in preparation for writing our own fishy feast recipe next week. In math, we've been exploring the properties of many different 2d shapes. We have been solving word problems relating to shapes and learned the names of shapes that have 9 and ten sides. In Science, we tested whether fat would protect our hands from the cold like it does with seals in the Arctic. We concluded that it does, but the finger that wasn't protected by fat got very cold. We also made some safer Internet posters and learnt how to stay safe online. We had a trip to the library where most of us signed up for a library card. Year Three This week in Year 3, we have been working really hard learning about all the different features of a non-chronological report and researching about Egyptians in order to write our own report. In math, we have been focusing on our new unit of multiplication mainly developing our skills of using the grid method pictorially. Our RE topic is looking at the religion Christianity and Jesus' miracles so we have been leaning about how Jesus healed the paralyzed man. The children have been designing posters linked to our new Healthy School initiative to reduce our sugar intake. Next week, we will be putting all our research together about Egyptians to create our own non-chronological report. In math, we will be moving on to looking at how to use the column method to multiply. We will also be continuing our topic work on 'Tomb Raiders'. Year Four This week we have been looking at lots of different things. In math, we've been calculating quantities using non-unit fractions. We can show you our two steps to calculate this using our Fraction Actions: please ask us to show you how we do this! In English, we've been writing our own narratives using expanded noun phrases, intensifiers, prefixes, prepositions, inverted commas... And lots more! In our lunchtime clubs, some of us wrote poems and some of us made friendship bracelets: even Miss Singer got one from a lovely pupil. We also had lots of fun playing football with our friends, and we played multiplication BINGO in math club! This week was also Internet safety week. We learnt not to give any personal details away to strangers. Year Five This week the children have been writing a newspaper report about a fossil. This has a strong link to our topic ‘Time snatchers’. In maths we have been converting fractions to decimals. When the children have mastered this skill, they have been creating video blogs to explain the process of solving a fraction/decimal tarsia. (This is like a mathematical jigsaw). The children have thoroughly explained how they have put the jigsaw together. These will appear on our class page soon. Our reading buddies, Alyssa, Cameron and Kirsten, have been working extremely hard with 3 children from Year Three. In addition to all of this fantastic news, the children’s art work has been put up on display by Mr Holt. The children have all worked incredibly hard on their African masks. Year Six This week we have been revising and doing practice SAT's in Reading, Maths & SPAG, and we are extremely proud of all the effort and hard work our children have made! In Topic this week we have been learning all about what fossils are. In PE, because of all the hard work in revising for our practice exams, both classes were rewarded with an afternoon PE session in the form of a mini Olympic Games. In E safety week, we learnt some very important advice: never let a stranger get your personal details; don’t let anyone cyber bully you; and most importantly, don’t post anything that Year might show 5 details about where you live, what your name is or which school you go to. We have been designing E safety posters to inform other children about being safe online. Also, there is to be an E safety workshop next week to educate people about the dangers of being online. Teacher’s who think children’s parents aren’t aware of the dangers, will be invited. Attendance: This week :: Mr Nuttall has been supporting another of our E-ACT Schools with their attendance this week for a couple of days. We will put this week’s attendance on the website on Monday. Mr Nuttall tweets attendance every day. Keep your eye out and remember we expect every child in school every day on time. VIPs: Year 1: Danielle and Rusne. Year 2: Ethan Norton. Year 3: Annie and Mame and Harley. Year 4: Daniel and Jonathan. Year 5: David and Ashton. Year 6: Fatou and David. On Wednesday 8th February, Eddie, the Blackley Vicar visited Year 4 Hill. He came into our class so that we could hot seat him. We asked lots of questions on Christianity. The information Eddie gave us was very interesting and he answered all our questions in a fun, understandable way. Celebration Assembly Award Winners: Year 1: Tyler and Rachael. Year 2: Abdou Saho and Freya Rowland. Year 3: Stacey and Allan. Year 4: Isabel and Liam. Year 5: Olivia and Maxwell. Year 6: Fatou and Kevin. Blackley’s Basket ballers shoot into the semi-finals. On Thursday 9th February, our basketball team took the short trip to Abraham Moss High School to compete in their first ever basketball tournament against other local schools. The team: Patricia, Jacob, Amy Leigh, Mohamed and Declan. The children were a credit to the academy and played exceptionally well as a team. They played 3 games and won 2 of them. This means that the children will now compete in the semifinal next week (16th) at the same location. We are incredibly proud of them. This week I have been so proud of Reception and Nursery for the way they keep everyone safe when they move around school. Please encourage them to keep it up! I have a request of all our parents and carers. We have just four values that we insist that all of our children follow. They can be found on our website. Can I ask that you talk to the children about the values and check in with them each day as to what extent they have followed them? Thank you. I would like to say thank you to year six for all of your hard work in tests this week. All children improved on last time! Well done. I would also like to say well done to year five. Your wonderful art work is displayed on the stairs and I absolutely love it! I’ve also been impressed with the quality questions that year four asked of Eddie this week in their Christian RE session. Well done. Kati-Anne Roughley Head of school:
