Message from the Executive Director of the
Ethiopian Medical Association
Honorable guests and members of the Ethiopian Medical Association:
On behalf of the EMA secretariat staff, I welcome you to the 53rdannual medical conference and International exhibition of the Ethiopian Medical Association.
The Ethiopian Medical Association is more committed than ever before to addressing
the interests of its members. This year’s annual medical conference and international
exhibition will be held over a whole week with the main theme of” Being a doctor in
Ethiopia: the challenges and opportunities”. Pre conference CPD will be held from
April 24 to 26 on different and cross cutting issues like health care ethics and professionalism, patient safety, clinical quality audit and manuscript writing at St. Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College and Addis Ababa University College of Medicine
and Health Sciences. Different activities will be held on the conference days from
April 27 to 29, 2017 including panel discussions on CRC and private health sector
challenges and opportunities, presentation of scientific papers and posters, state-of-the
-art lectures, outstanding students’ award, individual merit award and best institution
award, blood donation with the motto “We serve with our knowledge and blood”. In
addition, we will have two side meetings on different issues. On Sunday, the final day
of the conference, EMA Run will be held with the motto, “Run the talk: family planning for prosperity”. Then on the same day, we will have Gala diner .
This year’s lectures and CPDs will be accredited. That means attending the lectures
will earn you CPD credits. Therefore, make sure you don’t miss them.
The Ethiopian Medical Association is grateful to all partners and sponsors who have
helped make this conference a success.
And finally, I wish you all a fruitful deliberation.
Thank you
Dr. Yeneneh Getachew
Executive Director,
Ethiopian Medical Association
The CIRHT Ethiopia program launched in February 2015 with support from the Federal
Ministry of Health and the University of Michigan Health System. CIRHT’s national network of ten partner medical schools is preparing medical professionals to safeguard the
health and future of women, girls and families with a new approach to reproductive health
training.
Health professionals are the foundation of healthy families and thriving communities.
CIRHT is working with medical schools to train the health work force of the future with
comprehensive reproductive health education rooted in three areas: hands-on clinical
training, patient service and research.
Training:
In Ethiopia, students at medical schools partnering with CIRHT are learning to meet client needs across the reproductive health continuum of care. The integrated curriculum is
preparing graduates to provide family planning and contraceptive services, comprehensive abortion care and quality counseling. Beyond the classroom, these future doctors,
nurses and midwives hone their skills in simulation labs, reproductive health clinic attachments and internships.
Service:
With hands-on training, students learn critical techniques as well as the communication
and counseling skills needed to deliver quality care. Every CIRHT graduate learns how to
work with a patient to address her individual needs, whether it is counseling on a full
range of contraceptive methods or comprehensive abortion care. When doctors, nurses
and midwives understand and prioritize caring for women and girls, they will help reduce
the stigma that too often surrounds reproductive health services.
Research:
CIRHT fosters a ‘team science’ approach to research, encouraging students and faculty to
collaborate to collect local data and find answers through scientific exploration. To assess
how the integrated reproductive health teaching curriculum is expanding skills and how
every facility can improve the care it delivers. CIRHT connects partner medical schools
with experts around the world, including the University of Michigan network.
CIRHT’s Strategy:
To increase the number of health professionals providing quality, comprehensive reproductive health care, CIRHT is working to:
1. Build faculty capacity on clinical training in reproductive health services, medical and
surgical pregnancy termination, as well as teaching and research skills.
2. Improve the capacity of partner medical schools with the physical infrastructure,
equipment and instruction models needed to deliver quality training.
3. Implement and expand integrated pre-service training for medical students, interns
and residents.
