M a r b l e s , varying in colour from a red, like
jasper, to streaked and variegated, have been
worked in this county, at Boreenmanna and
Little Island near Cork. Johnstown near Fermoy, Midleton, Mitchelstown, Churchtown,
and near Buttevant. These marbles are well
known and have been extensively used.
L i m e s t o n e principally occurs in the valley
of the Lee, near Cork, and thence eastward to
Youghal, also in the valley of the Blackwater.
M a n y of these stones are remarkable for their
beauty. T h e dolomytes of ihis county have
been utilized for the manufacture of magnesia.
C l a y s . — B r i c k and pottery tiles, draining
pipes, ornamental flower pois, etc, extensively
manufactured near Youghal, at Ballinphellic
near Cork, and at Belvelly near Queenstown.
