Fundraising
Can you encourage your class or school
to hold a fundraising event or activity for
Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation?
Here’s a few ideas to get you started. Any money raised will help the charity
fund lung cancer research and support people living with lung cancer.
Take on the playground challenge
Organise a physical activity all the
children can take part in. Perhaps a walk,
hop, skip or jump around the playground
that they can be sponsored to take part.
Non-uniform day
Let the pupils and staff
come to school in their
own clothes and each
person pays £1.
School Disco
Add a charity angle to your
end of term school disco.
Charge pupils a small entry
fee with the money raised
being donated to charity.
School silence
Can you get sponsored to not talk for
a whole hour? See if your whole school
can stay silent for an hour and raise
money through sponsorship.
Cake Bake day
Hold a cake sale and sell
some home-baked treats
to staff and pupils.

Factsheet

Diaphragm
You are born with two lungs; each lung
is divided into smaller sections called
lobes - three on the right and two on
the left. The inside of your lungs are
like a huge sponge.
Every part of your body needs oxygen
to function. When you breathe in, fresh
air brings new oxygen into your body
and when you breathe out, “used”
breath is removed.
School activity pack
As you breathe air in, you use the muscles
of your ribcage and especially the major
muscle called the diaphragm to pull air
into your lungs.
Your diaphragm is dome shaped and lies
below your lungs towards the bottom of
your rib cage. It separates the chest from
the stomach area.
Each time you breathe in, the air flows into
your nose or mouth down through your
ilovemylungs

Factsheet and activity
throat and into your windpipe (trachea).
The trachea divides into two smallerpassages
called the left and right bronchi.
Like branches, the bronchi divide again
and again, branching into much smaller
tubes (bronchioles), which take the air
to millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli,
and into the blood.
This oxygenated blood is then carried from
your lungs to the heart, which pumps the
blood throughout the body.
Activity
Put one hand on your chest and
the other on the upper part of
your tummy.
Now breathe in deeply.
You will feel your chest and your
tummy get bigger as the air goes
into your lungs.
When the diaphragm contracts
(gets tighter) it pushes some of
the organs in your tummy down
so that there is more space in
your chest.
