Volume 13 Issue 4 www.ayso779.com October 16, 2004 Winning vs. Success by Jerry Norton Region 779 Newsletter EVERYONE PLAYS, OPEN REGISTRATION, BALAN CED TEAMS, POSITIVE COACHING, GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP The coach of a youth sports team needs to have a definition of success that is not predicated solely on winning a game or having a winning season. Players and coaches alike should understand that participation, performance, effort and improvement count as much if not more than the final score of any game. compromised. In youth sports, “striving to win” is a fundamental element of the competitive process and in striving to win, an individual athlete should strive to perform the very best he or she possibly can. The task for the youth coach is to help young athletes develop skills and to perform those skills to the best of their individual abilities. By teaching players that good performance and maximum effort equate to success while poor performance and a lack of effort lead to failure, the players’ motivation can be enhanced and success is within the reach of all players and coaches. The old expression “It’s not whether you win or lose but how you played the game” is much preferred over the more modern Vince Lombardi adage that “Winning isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.” Unfortunately, children today are learning that success equates to winning and failure to losing. We glorify winners with trophies, plaques and parades and ignore, even vilify losers, but when winning becomes the only objective of Encouragement and effective youth sports, other very important goal setting are the coach’s values and objectives are lost or key tools in this pursuit. The coach must work closely with each player to set specific behavior-oriented goals. These should be obtainable but challenging, individual performance goals, goals which view success in terms of surpassing one’s own performance standards rather than exceeding the performance of others. In this way all players, the skilled and the less-skilled continue working to improve performance and can measure their current skill level relative to their previous performance. The goals and the player’s progress in achieving them ultimately provide a measure of each player’s effort and improvement. Thus, a successful performance, which is not dependent on the score of a game, is within the reach of every player. John Trevgoda, Editor [email protected] Quote of the Day "The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime." -Babe Ruth Referee Corner Rule 9—The Ball In and Out of Play For those of us who were raised playing basketball or American football, trying to determine whether the ball is in or out of play during a soccer game is somewhat difficult. Unlike basketball or football, the position of the player or the player's feet is irrelevant. Only the position of the ball matters. Is it In…or Out?? Try imaging the soccer field as a three dimensional box, with invisible vertical planes rising from the outside of the two touch-lines (side-lines) and the outside of the two goallines. As long as the ball is within those invisible planes or is in contact with one of those planes, it is not out. It must entirely leave the box to be out. This is a very simple concept, but, particularly for those accustomed to basketball or football, there are times where the ball appears to be out of play when it is not. For example, a ball rolling along outside the touch line remains in play as long as part of the ball is over the touch line. A player may run outside the touch line to play it. Does anybody need more Ref Points?? The U-10 and older divisions invite those teams that have accumulated sufficient referee points to participate in a post season tournament. To qualify for this tournament, each team must acquire 19 Ref Points by Week 10 of the season. In the past, the only way a team could earn Ref Points was by refereeing games. For the remainder of this season, teams will be rewarded with Ref Points for assisting with other tasks necessary for our kids to enjoy their soccer experience. One Ref Point for parents who volunteer for the following tasks: • Painting the Fields prior to the Saturday games. • Staffing the Referee Tents throughout the day on Saturdays. • Assisting with the opening and closing activities at one of our four venues. By definition, the ball is out of play when: • It has completely crossed the goal line or touch line, whether on the ground or in the air • Play has been stopped by the referee. The ball is in play at all other times, including when: • It rebounds from a goalpost, crossbar or corner flag post and remains in the field of play • It rebounds from either the referee or an assistant referee when they are on the field of play It is the job of the referee (aided by the assistant referees) to determine when the ball leaves the field. The Referees' decisions should be quick, strong and confident. Coaching Information • All coaches and assistant coaches must wear their Safe Haven badge at all times while coaching. Beginning this week, coaches and assistant coaches will not be allowed to participate in the game if they are not wearing their badge. • All volunteers (including coaches, assistant coaches and referees) are required to be Safe Haven certified. Another Safe Haven class will be scheduled in the near future if there is sufficient interest. Please contact your Division Coordinator for more information. • The regional website, www.ayso779.com, will have the team standings along with up to date referee point status. • Please remember that the teams playing the first and last games of the day are responsible for setting-up and disassembling the goals on their respective fields. Each team is eligible for earning a maximum or three Ref Points each Saturday (including games refereed).
