LOIRE 2014 SPECTACULAR SAUVIGNON BLANC MUSCADET A VINTAGE NOT TO BE MISSED WINES TO PLEASE ALL PALATES ‘...exactly what the Loire is famed for - refreshment, lightness and purity’ (JancisRobinson.com) LBJUL15/2 thewinesociety.com/loire A VINTAGE NOT TO BE MISSED Right from the off we knew there was something special about the 2014 vintage in the Loire: even our earliest tastings offered both pleasure and promise. The other good news is that while the quality has rarely been higher, the prices are lower. This offer features 13 wines (marked with a ) that were reduced in price in July. There are wonderful wines the length of the valley, from delicious Muscadets in the west to the Côte Roannaise in the south, with spectacular sauvignons along the way. A good vintage for whites is not always as good for reds but the fine late season allowed for long slow ripening of healthy fruit and this is certainly a vintage in which to discover or re-discover them, so we offer a selection of earlier-drinking examples below. Highlights of this vintage are featured in four mixed cases: we offer six-bottle selections of Muscadet and Loire Reds, a Sauvignon Blanc Dozen (with an £12.20 saving) exploring a variety of appellations and an Exploration Mixed Dozen (with a £9.45 saving) that contains a careful mix of styles that would make a good start point if you are new to the Loire, and a handy overview if you are already a convert. Joanna Locke MW Society Buyer SAUVIGNON BLANC Sauvignon blanc’s refreshing qualities, coupled with it rarely being subjected to oak ageing, make this an ideal wine to appreciate in all its youthful freshness. Glorious in 2014. Val de Loire Sauvignon Blanc IGP, Bougrier 2014 Light easy-drinking screwcapped IGP (the old Vin de Pays) sauvignon from family-owned Maison Bougrier, in the style of Touraine but at a more modest price. 12% ref LB-LO11531 £5.95 bottle £71 dozen MUSCADET The word from suppliers is that 2014 is possibly the best Muscadet vintage ever – at least in their memory – and it is certainly very good. Muscadet ripens early to produce a naturally light style with fresh, sappy flavour but these days, and especially in a fine vintage such as 2014, a little more body, which makes it as easy to drink on its own as with food. ‘The (2014) Muscadets encapsulate everything unique and delicious about that appellation’ Richard Hemming, JancisRobinson.com The Society’s Muscadet Sèvre-etMaine sur Lie 2014 From long-term supplier Chéreau-Carré, who have made wine for us for over 25 years, this is typically fresh and sappy, with the ripeness and balance of this fine vintage. 12% ref LB-LO11541 £6.50 bottle £78 dozen Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine sur Lie, Château de la Templerie, Domaine Huchet 2014 This is an organically produced Muscadet from the commune of Château Thébaud, made by a bright young grower, and great value. Delightfully light and mineral. 12% ref LB-LO11341 £6.95 bottle £83 dozen Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine sur Lie ‘Petit Mouton’, Louis Métaireau 2014 The fruits of the wonderful 2014 vintage in the hands of such a quality-conscious producer makes for delicious Muscadet even at this level, their entry-point sur Lie. Round and generous but appetisingly fresh. 12% ref LB-LO11761 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen NEW Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine sur Lie ‘Cardinal Richard’, Sauvion 2014 Pierre Sauvion’s prestige cuvée is blended from a variety of sources in the region and made only in the best years. This has hints of ripe pear on the nose and full palate but still with Muscadet’s inherent freshness. 12% ref LB-LO11741 £8.25 bottle £99 dozen Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, Domaine Guénault 2014 Fresh, young classically-styled sauvignon from the Bougrier’s own property, now in a smart new screwcapped bottle. Goat’s cheese – served hot or cold – is a great match. 13% ref LB-LO11501 £7.25 bottle £87 dozen Touraine Sauvignon Blanc ‘Les Hauts Lieux’, Bougrier 2014 The Bougrier family’s premium sauvignon from vineyards at Chenonceaux, now in a smart new ‘antique’ glass bottle with screwcap. This is a little more modern in style with riper fruit. A great seafood wine but easy to drink on its own too. 12% ref LB-LO11491 £7.50 bottle £90 dozen Cheverny, Domaine du Salvard 2014 A perennial members’ and buyers’ favourite (it was one of our Wine Champions this year, and not for the first time!) from the Delaille brothers. Vibrant, ripe and fresh, the appellation here demands 15% chardonnay alongside majority sauvignon blanc, though you would hardly know it. 12% ref LB-LO11331 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen Coteaux du Giennois, Domaine de Villargeau 2014 Marc Thibault’s popular Giennois shows great consistency vintage after vintage: an elegant sauvignon blanc with a flinty quality akin to nearby appellation Pouilly-Fumé but at a very accessible price. 12.5% ref LB-LO11421 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen Reuilly ‘La Ferté’, Domaine Mabillot 2014 Fresh elegant sauvignon from the Central Vineyards region but more delicate in style than Sancerre. From a popular family domaine offering great value. 13% ref LB-LO11401 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen NEW Touraine Sauvignon, Domaine des Echardières 2014 A delightful sauvignon from relative newcomer Luc Poullain, this is juicy, ripe and fragrant, with generous length on the palate. 12% ref LB-LO11771 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen NEW Touraine Chenonceaux ‘La Long Bec’, Domaine des Echardières 2014 From one of the Loire’s newest and strictest appellations, here from Luc Poullain who is currently its president, and from a fine late harvest. Lower yields than AC Touraine and careful site selection make for a more concentrated style, with freshness, minerality and long flavour. Now to 2017. 13.5% ref LB-LO11781 £12.95 bottle £155 dozen RED WINES 2014 offered generously late and fine harvesting conditions, allowing good growers to get their grapes fully ripe. Saumur ‘Les Plantagenêts’ 2014 Deeply coloured but light and fresh young cabernet franc made to be forward in style for easy drinking – very successful in 2014 thanks to the fine Indian summer which allowed later-ripening grape varieties to shine. 12.5% ref LB-LO11651 £6.95 bottle £83 dozen NEW Fiefs Vendéens Mareuil ‘Collection’, J Mourat Père et Fils 2014 A fresh and spicy blend of pinot noir, negrette and cabernet franc (approximately a third of each) produced on warm volcanic soils at the western end of the valley. This is the closest appellation to the sea, not far from the Vendée coast. 12.5% ref LB-LO11731 £7.50 bottle £90 dozen To order ROSÉ WINES Ranging from dry to off-dry, the rosé wines of the Loire Valley are refreshing, full of flavour and are excellent for barbecues or picnics. Sancerre ‘La Reine Blanche’, Domaine Vacheron 2014 Produced biodynamically, the Vacherons’ wines show marked minerality and benefit from time in bottle. Precise and with great length. Now to 2019. 12.5% ref LB-LO11551 £15.50 bottle £186 dozen CHENIN BLANC Chenin blanc is typically a later ripening variety and as such the 2014’s were not quite ready in time for this offer. The example below, however, was and is something of a delicious curiosity coming from the predominantly red Chinon appellation. Chinon Blanc, Domaine de la Noblaie 2014 A rare white Chinon from organic vineyards immaculately tended by young grower Jérôme Billard. A fresh and refined chenin blanc to enjoy with a simple piece of fish. Now to 2017. 13% ref LB-LO11371 £10.95 bottle £131 dozen Pinot Noir,Vin de France, Rousseau Frères 2014 Typically light in colour, this is a fresh strawberry-scented pinot produced organically from 25-40-year-old vines on the Rousseau family’s property in Touraine. 13% ref LB-LO11691 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen Touraine ‘Jajavanaise’, Domaine Paget 2014 From an estate at Rivarennes, in the appellation of Azay-le-Rideau, where Nicolas Paget’s vineyards are now certified organic. Fresh-tasting plush red blend of gamay with cabernet franc and 15% late-picked côt (malbec) which adds violet fragrance and deep purple hue. 13% ref LB-LO11361 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen thewinesociety.com/loire 01438 740222 Rosé d’Anjou, Famille Bougrier 2014 Off-dry and refreshing, this is a million miles away from Anjou of old: pretty pink colour, genuinely light and fresh tasting, and works well with or without food. 11% ref LB-LO11521 £6.50 bottle £78 dozen Coteaux du Giennois Rosé, Domaine de Villargeau 2014 Refined pinot noir rosé of palest pink from a popular producer: nicely rounded on the palate with lovely freshness. 12.5% ref LB-LO11391 £8.25 bottle £99 dozen NEW Reuilly Rosé ‘Les Chatillons’, Denis Jamain 2014 Rather than the pinot noir of nearby Sancerre, this Reuilly rosé is made from the pinkskinned pinot gris grape. Delicate in colour, with creamy texture, this makes an excellent match for fish and lighter Oriental flavours, as well as Parma ham and sweet Charentais melon. 12.5% ref LB-LO11671 £10.50 bottle £126 dozen NEW Chinon ‘Le Paradis’ 2014 From part of a 30-hectare domaine run and staffed by people with difficulties and disabilities, with the guidance of winemaker Romain Parisis. This is part of a wider local initiative to help disabled people with work, housing and family support. The wine is a sweet-fruited young cabernet franc that is remarkably easy to drink from an appellation which in less-blessed vintages can be on the firm side. 13% ref LB-LO11481 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen Côte Roannaise ‘Les Originelles’, Domaine Sérol 2014 A delightful and fruity gamay from granite slopes above the Loire at Roanne, where the style is reminiscent of nearby Beaujolais.
