Craig’s Corner…
Last night, Sarah and I ate at a restaurant which had 12 TV sets powered up. The dining area measured
approximately 30’X30’ or about the size of 2 large family rooms. The sets were tuned to 4 different channels, all of
which were broadcasting some type of sports news commentary. The volume on every set was muted and there
was no hearing impaired script appearing at the bottom. This made for a pleasant dining experience, especially for
one who has trouble dealing with background noises, but it basically rendered the TVs useless, since no one could
receive, decipher, and comprehend the message of the commentators. A viewer could comprehend the basic
subjects of the dialogues due to the continuously revolving newsreel footages, but the specifics of the commentaries
were incomprehensible.
Spiritually, we may be able to see and read the words of the Bible, but if we have muted our ears to the intended
message, the Scriptures prove useless to us; through our sight, we may be able to understand that the Bible is
intended to affect the demeanor and destiny of our souls, but the deafness of our spiritual hearing renders us
incapable understanding exactly how the message is to be applied to either our temporal or eternal lives.
30 "As for you, son of man, your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses,
say to one another, each to his brother, 'Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the LORD.'
31 And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but
they will not do it; for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain.
32 And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and plays well on an
instrument, for they hear what you say, but they will not do it.
(Ezekiel 33:30-32 ESV)
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a
mirror.
24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a
doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
(James 1:22-25 ESV)
