Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), one of the bestknown Spanish artists of the twentieth century,
had a long, productive career creating art in
a wide range of styles and forms. He showed
remarkable artistic talent as a child and had his
first exhibition when he was 13 years old. Three
Musicians is an example of Picasso’s cubist
painting style.

2. Students submit a rough sketch of their scrapbook pages.
Return the sketches with your suggestions. For vocabulary and
grammar practice, ask students to work with a partner and
present their drafts to each other.
• Study the painting and list some characteristics
that show why this style is known as “cubism.”

Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) is one of
the best-known Mexican painters.
In spite of a childhood illness, a
crippling traffic accident, and many
hospital stays throughout her life,
Kahlo was a successful painter and
led a very active social life. She used
her artwork as an outlet for her
physical and emotional suffering.

• Frida Kahlo painted over fifty selfportraits. What is she saying about
herself through this painting?
As you learn how to describe yourself and your
friends, you will make connections to these
countries and places:
Options:
1. Students feature fictitious friends in their scrapbook.

Directions:
1. Cover work area with newspapers.
2. Blow up balloons to grapefruit size.
3. Place each balloon in the mouth of a jar,
with the tied end inside the jar.
1
4. Cut strips of newspaper 6" 2 ".
5. In the foil pan, mix equal amounts of
1
white glue and water (about 2 cup each).
Dip newspaper strips in glue mixture and
apply wet strips to balloons, criss-crossing
them. Use five layers to make the maraca
strong. Be sure only the bottom parts of
the balloons show through.
6. Let dry overnight. Hold each balloon by
the tied end and burst it with a pin.
7. Remove the balloon. Insert 12 beans or
pebbles through the hole in each maraca
and tape the hole closed.
8. To make handles, cut four parallel slits
(about 3" long) into the end of each
paper towel tube, running lengthwise.
Circle the tubes with tape just below the
slits to keep them from splitting further.
Spread the slit pieces apart and fit the
maraca onto them. Tape the slit pieces
firmly to the maraca, taping all the way
3

around and 2 to 4 of the way up the
maraca. Paint and let dry overnight.
9. Cut two strips of crepe paper about 3"
wide and 14" long. To make a fringe, cut
112 " slits all along the edge of each strip,
about 14 " apart. Glue the uncut edge of
one strip to the handle
of one of the
maracas, starting
just below the
maraca. Wind
and glue the
strip around
the handle.
This game is played like Twenty Questions.
Use it in Capítulo 1B after students have
learned the vocabulary for describing
personality traits.
Players: entire class
Rules:
1. Students write their names on scraps of
paper and place them in a paper bag.
2. Shake the paper bag to mix up the
names. Then call on a volunteer to come
to the front of the class. The volunteer
draws the name of a student from the
paper bag, then gives the paper to you.
3. Students take turns asking the volunteer
yes / no questions in an attempt to
determine the identity of the person listed
on the scrap of paper.
Student 1: ¿Es una chica?
Leader: Sí.
Student 2: ¿Es deportista?
Leader: Sí.
Student 3: ¿Le gusta montar en bicicleta?
Leader: No.
Student 4: ¿Le gusta patinar?
Leader: Sí.
Student 5: ¿Es Mati?
Leader: Sí.
4. When a student correctly guesses the
identity of the person on the paper, he or
she becomes the new volunteer. Play
continues in this manner until every
student has had a chance to ask one or
two questions.
Variation: Instead of writing their own
names on the scraps of paper, students write
the names of celebrities.
