Assessment
St. Matthew’s Assessment Procedures
This Assessment Procedure Paper has been developed by all teaching staff at St. Matthew’s
PS. These procedures are now the formal procedures for assessment within the school. As a
staff we will continue to be reviewed periodically by all staff and adapted accordingly.
Assessment is carried out daily, weekly, periodically and termly at St. Matthew’s PS.
Daily
This could take the form of




This would be both formative and summative
Weekly
This could take the form of

unit tests
check ups
spelling assessment
mental maths
writing
reading comprehension
application of skills i.e. Dictation, writing, problem solving
This would be both formative and summative. Summative results should be recorded in the
assessment folder. Exceptional results either positive or negative should be evaluated in the
monitoring and tracking identifying next steps and interventions for the child. This provides
a clear picture for meeting learners’ needs.
Tracking & Monitoring Sheet
Our weekly Tracking and Monitoring sheet provides an opportunity for any
concerns/exceptions to be shared with SLT.
Periodic
This should take the form of the agreed assessment opportunities and focuses.
Reading Comprehension –be completed in the literacy and/or assessment jotter. Should be
marked and formatively assessed by the class teacher.
NFER Spelling – Spelling from NFER. In September and May P4-7. P1-3 in May only. In
September test should be completed on paper and used to plan next stages of learning. In
May this assessment should be completed in the assessment jotter as part of assessment week.
Please note the test i.e. Test D along with the date in the heading. This should be marked and
raw score noted in the summative assessment folder. Stanines and standardised score should
be added to the electronic monitoring and tracking on the Staff area. Please consult with ASN
Co-ord re exceptional cases.
Revision blocks and Common Words – This should be completed in the other assessment
weeks not noted above. Coverage of the spelling rules and common words taught and
covered so far should be assessed. Assessment should be completed in the assessment jotter
and results added to assessment folder.
Writing – A moderated writing task should be implemented during each planned assessment
week.
A piece writing should be completed in the assessment jotter by each child. This should
reflect what has been taught through applying skills of the genre that has been taught that
term The jotter should include the plan, the completed piece of writing and be corrected
using the school correction code and assessed in line with writing progression grid. Results
should be added to assessment folder and shared with line manager who will upload to
electronic system. Opportunities to verify writing will be made at stage/staff meetings.
Writing will not form part of the assessment week for January.
Talking & Listening –Please use the areas that you have identified in your assessment for
talking and listening and record this in your summative assessment folder.
Maths – During Assessment Week should be completed on squared paper and added into the
assessment jotter. The work should be marked and assessed and the results added to the
summative assessment folder.
All End of Unit maths assessments should form part of our summative assessment and results
recorded in the Assessment folder.
Mental Maths – Please compile a mental maths test of 10-15 questions from the agreed
assessment planner. This should be marked and results recorded in the summative
assessment folder.
Self Evaluation Sheets – This should be completed by all children at the end of each
assessment week for numeracy, literacy and health and wellbeing.
Termly
In line with EDC assessment procedures we carry out standardised test in reading and
mathematics in November and May. There is also an opportunity for Baseline assessment in
Primary 1 in August.
PM Bench Marking can be used as required in line with its administration procedures.
Summative Assessment Folders
Assessment folders should be made available to SMT the week following assessment week.
Please see Assessment Folder Checklist and please remember that this list is continually
evaluated in terms of purposefulness. Our electronic tracking system and assessment folders
should always be kept is up to date. Please ask for support if required.
