One such man was Lt. Cmdr. Butch O’Hare. Butch was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific. During one mission he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet. As he was returning to the mother ship he saw something that turned his blood cold: A squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American fleet. The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenseless. He couldn’t reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet. Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 calibers blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now-broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent. With no ammo he continued the assault diving into planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible. Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction. Deeply relieved, Butch O’Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier. This took place on February 20, 1942, and for that action Butch became the Navy’s first Ace of WWII, and the first naval aviator to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His hometown would not allow the memory of this WWII hero to fade, and today, O’Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this courageous man. Chicago wanted to remember. You can visit Butch’s memorial and statue next time you find yourself at O’Hare-it’s located between Terminals 1 and 2. The Bible is filled with passages (more then 100) exhorting us to remember such as “Remember Page 2 Pastor’s Corner continued . . . well what the Lord your God did...” in Deuteronomy 7:18. And so this month we pause to remember. Statistics say that over 37,000,000 men and women have served our country since its existence with over 640,000 men and women giving up their lives for you and me. Wallace Bruce writes; “Who kept the faith and fought the fight; the glory theirs, the duty ours.” This month as we observe Memorial Day, we remember and thank God for those who have paid the price for our freedom. At the same time we remember and thank God for Jesus Christ, who has set us free from the penalty for sin, because He was willing to pay the price. In Christ, Pastor Doug L.I.V.E. Our Faith Page 3 Short and Sweet Words May 2017 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! Later this month, on May 21 to be exact we will celebrate a special day in the life of our church. We will welcome into church membership this year’s confirmation class. And over the course of the year we have been focusing all of our attention on what it means and looks like to love God and each other with our heads, our hearts, and our hands. In other words, our love for Christ should reflect the love for Him we have in our hearts, a desire to know Him more with our mind, and finally to show this love and knowledge to others through acts of service. I want to take a brief moment and simply share what a joy it has been to walk alongside of our students and to see God at work in their lives as they have considered their walk with Jesus through these three lenses of head, heart, and hands. Along with learning about the core doctrines of our faith, we have spent considerable time digging deeper into God’s Word. One of the first things we do each time we gather is to spend time reading and discussing the Gospel of Mark. It always blesses me to hear the students share deeper questions and insights into God’s Word. They are practicing what it means to grow deeper in their knowledge of Jesus each and every time we spend moments in the Word. Another cool component of our confirmation class has been the service projects our students has engaged with. Our faith needs to be fleshed out and practiced with our hands and this is one that we are able to show the love of Jesus to others. What is also neat about the projects is that they are personal and each student chose to serve in a way that is unique to their experiences and passions in life. And it has been so neat to see how their church family has rallied behind each one to support their work. I have been so blessed and thankful to see the power of God’s people coming together to help out our students and at the same time bless a larger group of people in the name of Jesus! And finally, we have discovered what it looks like to sow our faith deep in our hearts. Another major product has been to choose a passage of scripture where God has made Himself known in a powerful way. These passages as well as incredible testimonies and stories of God’s faithfulness to each of our students were shared at our Easter Sonrise service. I was so blessed to hear each of our students share just how they have seen God at work in their lives already and to know they are showing that truth and these memories in their heart is such a joy. As we look forward to celebrating Confirmation Sunday it is my prayer that you have been encouraged to hear a bit more about our Confirmation Class and may have opportunities this day to practice your love for Jesus with your head, your heart, and your hands! In Christ, Pastor Ryan Page 4 L.I.V.E. Our Faith Treasurer’s Message Treasurer’s Report – March 2017 Treasurer’s Report – March 2017 March continued in a positive way. Income was $6,252 over budget. Our Faith Christian Education Exciting Change for Sunday School We’ve got an exciting change coming to Sunday School! Beginning in September, both of our Sunday School hours will be using the same curricula. This will give our families the assurance that their children are receiving the same lesson no matter which worship service they choose to attend! Christian Education needs your help to make this transition a success! All you need is a love for Jesus, a heart for children and a little bit of your time and talent! During our 9:00 AM Sunday School hour, we need one teacher to share the responsibility of teaching our 5th/6th grade class. Scheduling will be done on a biweekly basis (the Sunday following Labor Day through the first Sunday in June). During our 10:45 AM Sunday School hour, we need: one teacher for our Age 3 through 2nd grade class rd th one teacher for our 3 /4 grade class th th one teacher for our 5 /6 grade class Our High School class (9th grade through 12th grade) will continue during our 9:00 AM Sunday School hour. Sunday School Sunday School Nursery Care will continue to be available for all children up until their 4th birthday, but, we encourage all families with children who are age 3 and potty-trained to give Sunday School a try! If you hear His call to serve, contact me at [email protected] or see me between services in the Christian Education office. I will be happy to give you some samples of the curriculum for each grade level and answer any questions you may have to help you make this decision for Jesus and our students. All scheduling during our 10:45 AM Sunday School hour will be done on a biweekly basis (the Sunday following Labor Day through the first Sunday in June). Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 L.I.V.E.
