From the Principal - Presbyterian Ladies` College

FORTNIGHTLY NEWSLETTER OF PRESBYTERIAN LADIES' COLLEGE, SYDNEY Thursday 26 March 2015 Issue 5, 2015 From the Principal We have this word ‘integrity’ in our catch-phrase about the school. We state that we want to educate girls
and young women to value, indeed to have, integrity and purpose.
Whilst I thoroughly believe in it, it seems like such a weighty goal. Is it a bridge too far? We all know that
we can all deceive ourselves. We can each be tempted to exaggerate, or to make a partial truth work to
our advantage.
Why not just set the goal on growing successful women or powerful women or really competent women?
Last week’s IGSSA Swimming Carnival strongly reinforced to me why I think we should aim for developing
integrity in our young people. All throughout the afternoon Abbotsleigh and PLC Sydney swimmers were
stroke for stroke in the pool. They did better in butterfly. We did better in breast stroke. This was a fierce
and good spirited competition. We were the defending champions: they were the usurpers.
Both schools brought along Year 9 as cheer squads. Abbotsleigh students were placed next to ours. There
was also a good spirit in the cheering, and it was very loud.
It came down to the final four relays. We had to win each one to pip them in the points, assuming they
finished second in each. With great heart and drive our relay teams won the first three relays with
Abbotsleigh placing second in each. It had come down to the last race. Our team was magnificent in the
final race, but so was theirs and they took the trophy. By the skinniest of margins they had won the carnival.
And now to the thing that made me extremely proud to be the Principal of PLC Sydney. At the ceremony when Abbotsleigh was
declared the winner our Swim Team, and our Year 9 students in the stands, stood to applaud them. No teacher prompted them. No
Principal was waving his arms saying stand up. No parent said “Get up out of your seat”. They just did it. Despite the disappointment
they felt, they recognised Abbotsleigh with warmth and honesty. They were magnaminous. They told the truth to themselves and
others: Abbotsleigh deserved to be lauded on the day.
I loved that. It is so important to learn to both win and to lose graciously.
It is so important to think of others, even in your moment of disappointment – when you have given everything.
Well done PLC Sydney!
I wish to note also the tremendous efforts of our divers at the same carnival. They finished second – a great improvement on
previous years. I commend Mrs Michelle Olsson on the great work she has done enabling and lifting this team.

FORTNIGHTLY NEWSLETTER OF PRESBYTERIAN LADIES' COLLEGE, SYDNEY Thursday 26 March 2015 Issue 5, 2015 LIONS YOUTH OF THE YEAR QUEST
Karen Zhang, our 2015 Debating Captain, moved to the Regional Final of Lions
Youth of the Year Quest, held last Sunday. The day started with Karen being
interviewed by a panel of five academics and professionals for 40 minutes. They
asked probing questions, tested her general knowledge and assessed her
leadership abilities. The Public Speaking component was held in the
afternoon. Karen commenced with her Impromptu Speaking section which she
handled very well. She demonstrated a comprehensive knowledge of our education
policy and the value of education. Her prepared speech made us think about the
alienated youth in out society and the consequences of not embracing all citizens.
Although the day was very demanding, Karen feels it was an incredibly value
experience, especially for a young person about to leave school and embark on a
life of interviews and public speaking opportunities. Well done Karen.

Connect renaming – winner announced Congratulations to Mrs Samantha Smith (mother of Sascha in Year 8) and staff member Mrs Sal Wilding who are joint winners of
theConnect magazine renaming competition.
Mrs Smith provided 14 suggestions for the new name. Amongst them was The Camphor Laurel and The Laurel Tree in reference
to large tree that stands proudly in the centre of the College grounds.
Inspired by these names, Mrs Wilding suggested Camphora, which is part of the latin name for the Camphor Laurel tree, and has
been selected as the new name for the school's bi-annual magazine.
Dr Burgis is delighted with the new name. " Camphora encompasses the school's long and distinguished history, sits at the heart of
the school and provides shelter, and represents the academic, physical, emotional and spiritual growth of the students".
Both Mrs Smith and Mrs Wilding will receive a $200 David Jones gift voucher. Thank you to all other students, parents and staff
who contributed suggestions.
The first issue of Camphora magazine, which will be produced as an online publication, will be distributed in Term 2.

challenges and stimulation in the areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
The workshop also gives students an on-campus experience. It provides them with the opportunity to engage with University
teaching staff and current researchers, access first-class facilities and make friends with people who have a mutual interest in Science.
PLC Sydney received 16 places in 2014 and 11 in 2013. Students who attended last year enjoyed the program immensely.

COMPOSERS AT PLC SYDNEY
From 16–20 March the Music Department, staff and students enjoyed a wonderful
week of composition and lessons with Mr Paul Jarman. Girls in the Junior School
from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 were treated to lessons on rhythm reading and
writing, pitch reading and singing games. In Stage 4, Years 7 and 8 students
worked on composition activities related to their rhythmic and melodic assessment
tasks, dissecting a known melody and also adding rhythms to words to create
ostinato patterns.
Girls in Stage 6 (Years 11 and 12) worked with Mr Jarman as they developed a
melody in the baroque style and/or added a ground bass line to the baroque
melodies they had already written. Year 12 students were able to work individually
with Mr Jarman on their HSC submitted core and elective compositions.
It was a wonderfully busy week during which Paul Jarman also spoke to the girls
in the Chamber Choir and Madrigal group about his commissioned work for the
choir calledMalala, which will have a world premiere at PLC Sydney’s Annual Music
Festival in June. Mr Jarman also discussed a new piece for the smaller PLC
Sydney Madrigal Group, which he is currently writing.

Perth to help PLC Perth celebrate their 100th anniversary. Mr Wishart, Ms
Clouston and Mr Lambert will be accompanying the 17 girls from Years 7–12.
The group has been working hard in preparation for this event, which is also a
fine lead-up to a busy time as they prepare for the 100th anniversary of ANZAC Day.
The group will be involved with several major events during the four days that
they are away. On Saturday 4 April the band will march through the centre of
Perth in a massed bands event. On Sunday 5 April they will attend the Inaugural

Samantha Donaldson and Laura Batchelor-Sharp. Congratulations to all team members. You represented the school with pride.

after a kindly bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy. However he is
relentlessly pursued by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean

Feminism pondered at Poetry Conference On Wednesday 11 March, Dr Guy’s Year 12 X class and Ms Sidoti’s Year 10 X class
joined together for a Poetry Conference. The purpose was to exchange ideas
and explore the relationship between feminist and poetic ideologies.
The Year 10 students took the role of popular feminists such as: Andrea Dworkin,
Germaine Greer, Julia Kristeva, Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray, and critiqued
famous poems which constructed women, from their feminist perspective. The Year 12
students then deconstructed these feminist perspectives commenting on the poem’s
portrayal of women and accentuating the preponderance of feminism in today’s
society. The Year 12s also helped extend the knowledge of the Year 10s by giving
their expertise on many of the poems including:
My Last Duchess by Robert Browning, My
Mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun by William Shakespeare, The Lady of Shalott
by Alfred Tennyson and Christina Rossetti’s, Goblin Market.
The conference ended with the Year 12s collecting a separate written critique from
each Year 10 student, which they later returned to the Year 10s with their review and
ideas for improvements.
Overall, the Poetry Conference was a huge success, which assisted the Year 10 students enormously in their understanding of
poetry and helped extend the Year 12 students’ knowledge on the history of feminism and the poetic construct of women. The
students are also exceptionally grateful for Ms Taylor’s attendance who helped keep the conference running smoothly by adding her
knowledge to the table. The English Department should be commended for this successful day, which helped both year groups to
consolidate and understand the role of women in poetry. Students are also especially thankful to Dr Guy and Ms Sidoti, who have
been a huge help in students’ learning of English.
