Medieval Day
This past week, as a part of their History studies
in Humanities, our Year 8 students took part in
Wellington's annual Medieval Day. The
educational group 'History Up Close' conducted
demonstrations and workshops for the students
that enabled them to get a practical sense of what
life would have been like in the Middle Ages.
Students had fun and learnt about medieval
music and dance, the games they played, the
costume and clothing they wore, the lifestyles of
all levels of society, as well as the weaponry and
armour used in the Middle Ages. Special thanks
go to those teachers who got into the spirit of the
day and dressed up and participated in the
activities with their classes.

Principal’s Report
It has been a busy start to Term 3 and even though it is only Week 3, the College Calendar reflects the variety
of events that have already taken place. The next month will again present our students with a wide range of
activities to either be directly involved in or to enjoy as a spectator.
Professional Learning
Friday of Week 3 was a student free day, but for staff it was an extremely busy work-day. The activities
undertaken during the day will ensure we continue to provide the best possible learning environment for
our students. On behalf of the staff I extend thanks to our Director of Curriculum, Marina Stergiou, Director
of Professional Learning, Michael Stephens and Assistant Principal, Fern Brisbane, for organising the day.
Medieval Day
On Tuesday this week all Year 8 students and their Humanities Teachers participated in a wide range of
activities centred on medieval times. The staff involved got into the spirit of the day with many fantastic
costumes worn to support the theme of the day. Well done to all involved. I believe it was a great day.
Cheap Thrills
Monday this week began with a special event for Year 9 students. Thanks goes to our Director of Wellbeing, Carmel Roberts, who
organised the entertaining activity, Cheap Thrills. It highlighted the need for all students to 'make wise choices' in relation to their overall
safety and wellbeing.
Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)
On Thursday this week over 400 students from Years 7 – 12 completed the AMC. Results in past years have been of a very high standard
and no doubt our 2015 participants will achieve similar if not even better results.
Congratulations to all of the students involved and thank you to our Mathematics Domain Leader, Heather Boschert, and all other staff
who supported her in organising and running this event. A special thank you also to our Director of Daily Operations, Eva Turewicz, who
coordinated the afternoon's program.
Presentation Ball
Each Monday, at the end of the school day, senior students have been practising their dance routines for the upcoming Presentation Ball,
which will be held at The Grand on Cathies Lane in Wantirna South, Friday 21 August. Tickets for this annual event are now on sale. We
look forward to the families and friends of this year's Presentation Set joining us for this special night.
Course Counselling
Year 10 students have started their journey to become members of our Senior School. First up was Shape Your Destiny with Darren Pereira
on Tuesday last week, followed by a Career Planning afternoon. Over the coming weeks each Year 10 class will work with a member of
the Careers Planning Team, under the guidance of our Director of Pathways, Lucinda Huffer, to ensure all possible future pathways are
investigated and evaluated. Subject selection for Year 11 will also be discussed with ongoing advice available.
The culmination of this Year 10 program will be the Course Counselling Day/Evening on Thursday, 20 August. Students and their families
are requested to book an interview time between 1.00pm – 8.00pm.
College Production
The cast and crew of this year's production, under the direction of Aben Alexander and Duncan Lake, began work during the Term 2 School
holiday break and continue their commitment with many practice sessions each week. Students got a preview at this
week's College Assembly.
I would like to extend my best wishes to all involved and we look forward to enjoying another wonderful College
event in the last week of August. Tickets will be available for purchase shortly.
Congratulations to Chelsea Radin of Year 10
Chelsea (right) has been selected to play in the SSV 17&U Softball Team in the 2015 Pacific School Games
Tournament. This year's tournament will take place in November and will be held in Adelaide. Just one week after
Chelsea heard that she had been selected for this State Schools' Team she was notified that she had also gained a
place in the Victorian U17 State Squad. Congratulations Chelsea and best wishes in the upcoming championships.
Parent Opinion Survey
Assistant Principal, Fern Brisbane, has asked me to remind parents who received the Parent Opinion Survey that replies are due by

Camps, Sports, and Excursions Funding
Funding from the first C.S.E.F. payment has now been received and, where successful, it has been allocated to family accounts.
For parents who applied before the end of Term 2 and were successful, a credit of $225 per eligible student is now available.
The C.S.E.F. payment will be allocated to each individual student as a credit on their family account. It can only be used for Camps, Sports
and Excursions/Incursions or for Physical Education and Sport electives at Years 9 and 10.
Parents can only use this $225 credit as a form of payment towards Camps, Sports and Excursions/Incursion when a signed permission
form is returned each time you would like to use the credit. You should write 'Please take from C.S.E.F. credit' next to the payment amount
on the sports/excursion form when you return it to the Cashier's Office before the deadline date.
For parents who applied after the end of Term 2, or were not successful in the first payment, additional payments will be received at the
college on Tuesday 21 and 28 August at this stage.
This 2015 funding amount will be carried forward into the new school year if it has not been allocated to any/all Camps, Sports and
Excursions this year.
Wellington Secondary College is still open for 2015 C.S.E.F. applications. If you are aware of another family who has not yet made an
application, please ask that they contact the office as soon as possible.

Sparks Engineering Camp
During the school holidays I was selected to attend Sparks Engineering Camp run by the Youth without
Borders and sponsored by other engineering firms such as Thales and Beck. It is a weeklong University
camp held in the Queens residential college at the University of Melbourne with approximately 60 students
year 10-12 from other schools and 15 staff mentors who are University students themselves.
I got to look at some interesting engineering research and industries whilst getting to experience what
university is like such as going to lectures, taking part in discussions and project activities such as making a
model aircraft station and programming
software.
By Dustin Dang
I also got to attend other universities like
RMIT, Monash University and La Trobe
University which gave us an introduction
of what kind of project they undertake
there.
Overall, Sparks Engineering camp is a great experience I had a lot of fun.
I strongly suggest it to people who are interested in going into
Engineering.

State Schools Spectacular
On Wednesday, 22 July accompanied by Ms. Reidy, Ms.
Tunnicliffe, and Mr. Coles, Wellington's participants in the
Victorian State Schools Spectacular headed out to the
Melbourne Town Hall for an all-day rehearsal. Over 500
students crowded into the hall to sing a wide range of songs
in the lead up to the Spectacular itself.
Held on Saturday 12 September, the Spectacular is the
biggest live music production in Victoria and will see our
students join a cast of over 3000, consisting of a mass choir
of 1500 students, 1400 dancers, an 80-piece orchestra, 25
solo singers, 24 solo dancers, as well as a cadre of circus
performers from the National Institute of Circus Arts, in an
exhibition of the talent and skill of Victorian State School
students. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the
Spectacular, and its theme is ‘What’s Your Story?’ It will be
a show not to be missed!

Assembly Basketball
On Thursday 30 July, Wellington held a
College Assembly. After an opening
address by Acting Principal Mrs
Commons (standing in for Mr Blaikie
who is overseas), staff and students
listened to a speech by a World Vision
representative on the 40th anniversary
of the 40 Hour Famine, outlining the
power of the smallest contribution to
make a difference. The Year 12 Health
class have been raising money for
birthing kits to send overseas, and their
fundraising raffle was drawn. Mr White
announced the winners of the Tour de
Wellington - Pehnryn (by
the tiniest of margins!),
and Mr Alexander and
cast members of the
College production (the
Humour Games) closed
the assembly with a
snapshot of the play - to
the great amusement of
the students!
