Avoiding and Treating Hospital-Acquired Infections: C. Difficile
Patients who have stayed in the hospital for long periods of time are at a
greater risk for contracting hospital-acquired conditions—illnesses they
don’t have when they enter the hospital but contract while they are there.
C.Diff is the abbreviated name for Clostridium difficile, is one such hospitalacquired infection that affects patients who take antibiotics.
One of the problems with C. Diff is that it is so easily spread. It lives on
surfaces for a long period of time, and is transferred by touch. In the
hospital, it’s not unusual to find C. Diff spores on bedrails, bed linens, the
TV remote, the telephone, the bathroom door handle or fixtures—
anywhere. Bleach is required to kill it on those surfaces in order to prevent
it from spreading to patients who touch the surfaces it resides on.
The most recognizable symptom of C. Diff is diarrhea which may be
accompanied by fever, loss of appetite, nausea, cramping or belly pain or
tenderness.
Treating C. Diff
Ironically, even though C. Diff can be the result of antibiotic exposure, it is
also treated using antibiotics. The antibiotics of clear choice for most
patients are metronidazole or oral vancomycin.
If you are hospitalized and begin to suffer diarrhea or run a fever, it may be
C .Diff. Know that you can be treated for it, but that you can pass it on to
others, too.
C Diff is one of those infections, and its death rate is rising.
Preventing C. Diff
The best advice, of course, is to prevent C. Diff to begin with, which you can
do by following the advice for preventing hospital acquired infections.

TIPS AND TRICKS
Place several drops of oil of lavender or peppermint on a cotton ball or two.
Put them into a small jar or margarine container. Poke a few holes in the
lid and cover. Put around the room.
Goodbye to Split Ends
Add a few drops of lavender oil to a tablespoon of warm (not boiling) castor
or sweet oil. Apply just to the ends of your hair. Then wrap hair with
plastic wrap or a plastic shower cap and cover with a warm towel—warm
the towel quickly by tossing it into the dryer for a few minutes. Leave on
for at least 30 minutes and then shampoo twice using cool water.
Pre-Shave for Silky Smooth Legs
Add a couple of drops of essential oil, such as eucalyptus, bergamot, or
lavender, to castor oil and mix with hands. Then apply the perfumed castor
oil directly to wet legs.
Pre-Shave for Men
Mix equal parts of castor oil and sweet oil, along with adding a drop or two
of an essential oil such as lavender or eucalyptus. Moisten beard with
warm water, and first apply a small amount of the pre-shave mixture, and
then the usual amount of shaving cream. Shave as usual.
Roach Patrol
Mix equal parts of boric acid powder and sugar, cornmeal or flour. Pour
this mixture into lids or small open containers and place in the area, such as
behind the refrigerator or backs of cabinets in the pantry, or underneath
the kitchen sink, but not on kitchen or bathroom counters or floors! You
also can put this mixture into hard-to-reach corners or cracks. Keep this
away from pets and small children.
Stinky Shoes
Lay a piece of plastic wrap into shoes and put a drop of clove oil on a cotton
ball and place it on plastic wrap to remove the odor. Don’t forget to take
this out of the shoes before you put them on. You also can use empty film
canisters as shoe odor busters. Poke holes into the lids and put the
essential oil perfumed cotton balls inside.
Bug-Free Room
Put a couple of drops of lavender or peppermint essential oil on a cool light
bulb to help repel bugs.
Insect Repellent
Mix 2 drops of oil of peppermint or lavender with 2 teaspoons of almond or
sweet oil and dab on the skin.
Pest-Free Picnic Table
Add 5 drops of lavender essential oil to 32 ounces of water. Pour into a
spray bottle and wipe down the table and chairs.
Body Heat Coolers
Place a piece of silverware on the back of your neck for a quick cool down.
Rest your wrist on a cold glass of iced water and feel the chill.
Wipe your feet with an alcohol wipe to cool off your whole body.
Chiller
Freeze several different sizes of water bottles to keep food chilled in an ice
chest. When the water melts, you can drink it!

Carl’s CAT Corner
The CAT team has been making some headway. With getting Mark Hess, the
county transportation administrator, involved, we have been in waters that have
not been chartered yet. Reaching out to him is the start of our voice being heard.
Mark Joseph attended the last county transportation system board meeting and
gave a presentation of his thoughts of the transportation system. He did a bangup job and I am very happy of how involved he has gotten in the advocation
process. I am proud to say he is on my CAT team. The more members that
engage and get involved, the more effective our voice will be as a TEAM.
Disability rights Ohio did not show up for the last meeting due to a
communication misunderstanding. They are supposed to attend the next
meeting and talk about voting rights as well as bringing a transportation advisor.
“Remember, change is often a slow and painful process.” Also remember “ If you
do nothing, you should expect nothing! Keep up the good work TEAM!!!

Mark’s Journal
4/07/2012 My students in all my classes are pretty polite
and listen well to what I have to say, but today I had to
lay the hammer down on one of them for lying to me.
The first student (out of 300+) I had to throw out of my
class. Not pretty but the rest of the class got very quiet.
In a sick kind of way, pretty funny. Ok, now for the
latest adventure: The Lazy Pug.
During break last week, Louie (fellow teacher from N.
Dakota) was talking about the burger he had a couple
of weeks ago at the Lazy Pug. Having not had a good
burger (in this case a Bacon Blue Cheese one) in
months, I was all up for going there. So Louie and I
went on Sunday for brunch. We take the ever
dangerous #112 to this Ex Pat hideaway and get there
around noon. Ride from campus is about an hour
provided we have a normal bus driver and they don’t
go “postal” on the riders. So we get there, nice little
place, about 60 seats, small bar (8 stools) and a patio out
front. It looked like a normal, everyday neighborhood
pub you would see in Chicago (relevant). Looked like
the bar some of us use to go to off of Beaumont Street.
We are greeted at the door by a cute curvy little blonde
haired (first one I’ve seen in China). She seats us and
presents the menu. Tells us we are too early for burgers
and then are only serving brunch (bummer). And then
our waitress comes... burgers be damned, I’m staying.
She is this 5 foot 8 inch brunette with green eyes. OMG!
Hi
History lesson – If you don’t already know, my gene
pool is dominated with the flirt chromosome and my
father wrote the book on how to banter with wait staff.
Poor Louie, quiet nice young guy from N. Dakota and
he has no idea what is going to happen, for that matter,
neither do I. Here we go...
I start off by asking her if she’s from around here
because I read that the prettiest girls in China are from
Chengdu. She smiles says no and then tells me I look
familiar. I ask her why, does this guy owe her money?
Once again, no but she was certain I have been in her
bar before. Her bar? Turns out it was her bar and she
had been living in Chengdu for 7 years. She moved
from the states with her husband (ouch!) and she was
from Chicago (husband, Danny – the guy behind the
bar, is from Milwaukee). Her name is Dana and is from
Chicago, theWrigleyville area. Obviously a Cubs fan
(another ouch!!). Needless to say the conversation really
gets moving and we are having a blast. I love fighting
with Midwestern women, they just know how to hold
their own. Louie, who has been in there a few times
before can’t believe what is occurring before his eye. At
one point I ask Danny if his wife has a sister, he smiles,
says thanks and yes but she got married last week
(again ouch!!!). He did say he would put in a good word
of me. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
As expected, we had great food, great service and a
good time. And, as we were leaving they invited us to a
private party at the bar on the 18th of May. Open bar
for me and my mates ... we are so there. I’m sure there
will be a story.
