Taste Buds | Introduction
FOREWORD
Taste Buds is a collaboration between safefood and West Cork Leader
Co-operative Society Limited.
safefood commissioned an interactive CD-ROM to educate eight to nine year
olds about healthy eating. The project was led by Prof Barbara Livingstone at the
University of Ulster and in conjunction with Dr Carole Lowis (Food and Health
Communications) and Interface New Media.
West Cork Leader Co-operative Society Limited independently commissioned
an interactive CD-ROM and web-based resource to increase awareness of the
origins of food and local produce among eight to twelve year olds. The project
was carried out by Cork Institute of Technology and Solas Nua Digital Media.
Taste Buds is the combination of these two resources and aimed at eight to
ten year olds. The collaboration included a pilot in five primary schools across
the country, which was advised by the steering group of Mike O’Byrne
(National Centre for Technology in Education), Michael Crowley/Kathleen
Downey (West Cork Education Centre), Maria Harrington (Health Service
Executive South) and Mary McDonald (Primary Curriculum Support
Programme).

Taste Buds | Introduction
WELCOME
Taste Buds has been developed by safefood and West Cork Leader
Co-operative Society Limited for use in primary schools throughout
the island of Ireland and is aimed at children aged eight to ten years. It
is designed to help you to deliver the food and nutrition component of
the Social, Personal and Health Education (SPHE) curriculum.
AIM OF TASTE BUDS
Taste Buds aims to help children enjoy learning about the origins and
production of food and the importance of eating a balanced diet and
physical activity. Taste Buds consists of eight sessions, each one taking
30-40 minutes to complete.
Within each session you will find Extension Activities that you can
use if you wish to develop some of the content in more detail. Within
Teacher’s Notes you will find suggestions and ideas for using the
resource. The Teacher’s Notes also indicate the curriculum context for
each session and identify opportunities for developing links across the
curriculum. Additional Teacher Information can be found at the end
of some of the Teacher’s Notes and can be used to develop the lesson
further. Homework suggestions are also included.

ABOUT THE RESOURCE
The Taste Buds sessions Finding Out About Food, Who Produces Our
Food, Where Does Our Food Come From and How Food is Produced deal
with the origins and production of food, and introduce the importance
of healthy eating. The Taste Buds sessions Boosting Breakfast, The Big
Match, Dancethon and Skateboard Competition provide key messages
on healthy eating and the importance of physical activity. These sessions
are brought to life by using cartoon style animations involving the four
Taste Buds characters. Each of the Taste Buds characters has a very
different personality and convey a distinct message about healthy eating
and the importance of physical activity through cartoon animation.
EIGHT FUN SESSIONS!
Each of the eight Taste Buds sessions are designed to be fun and
interactive. There are lots of great games and quizzes designed to get
the children involved as well as a number of real life food production
videos. The sessions can be completed in whatever order you wish;
the only exception is that The Big Match session should be completed
before the Dancethon session. Click on a session to get started!!!
