Spelling
Understanding and identifying suffixes
and their meanings can help you
determine the meaning and spelling of a
difficult or unfamiliar word. The suffix -ly changes
an adjective into an adverb. It means “like or
resembling.” When the suffix -ly changes a noun
to an adjective, it means “resembling.” It rarely
changes the spelling of the base word to which it
is added. The suffix -ence means “state or quality
of,” and, when added to a word, makes the word
a noun.
