The Inez Miller Conference on Communication Sciences and

PAID
Edmond, OK
Permit No. 14
Children with language impairments typically experience difficulties with
the acquisition of grammar. This presentation will provide clinicians with
a sentence-focused framework for identifying lexical verbs and sentence
subjects as treatment targets to support current and future grammatical
development. Strategies for modifying specific grammatical properties
of the language input of caregivers and teachers in ways that facilitate
grammatical growth will also be discussed.

THE INEZ MILLER ENDOWED CHAIR
UCO SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY PROGRAM
The UCO Speech-Language Pathology program was established in
1964. In 1978, the program implemented the Masters degree program.
The graduate program has been accredited by the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association since 1993. The UCO program is
committed to training Speech-Language Pathology students with a broad
knowledge base and balanced experiences to prepare them for any
professional setting.

The Endowed Chair was established through a gift from Mrs. Inez Miller,
a former Oklahoma teacher with an abiding love for children. Mrs. Miller,
who later resided in California, experienced hearing loss in her later
years and was sensitive to those who find communication to be difficult.
Her generous gifts to the UCO Foundation support the UCO Inez Miller
Endowed Chair, student scholarships, graduate research assistants, and
the Inez Miller Conference on Communication Sciences and Disorders.
The current holder of the Inez Miller Endowed Chair is Dr. Susan Benson.

DR. PAMELA HADLEY
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Champaign, Illinois
Dr. Pamela A. Hadley, Ph.D., CCC/SLP, is an Associate Professor
of Speech and Hearing at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Dr. Hadley’s program of research focuses upon improving
the identification of young children at-risk for specific language
impairment and the development of effective, evidence-based
early grammatical interventions. For over 20 years, Dr. Hadley has
worked to provide more precise, linguistically-motivated longitudinal
characterizations of early grammatical development in young children.
She has developed new metrics for use by researchers that can be
translated into useful clinical tools for clinicians. Her programmatic
research, funded by the NIH and NSF, has advanced the knowledge
base on individual differences among typical and atypical language
learners, the contribution of children’s lexical abilities and adult
language input to later grammatical growth, and the efficacy of
intervention strategies for accelerating language development. She
is deeply committed to advancing clinical practice and recognizes
that research-to-practice gaps are addressed when researchers make
concerted efforts to meet the needs of practitioners. Dr. Hadley is a
Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and
she has also served as Associate Editor for AJSLP and JSLHR.
