Clergy Install TI’s New
Lay Leadership
Tikvat Israel
BULLETIN
Rabbi Ben Shull and Cantor Rochelle Helzner formally installed a new set of officers
and board members at a 10-minute ceremony during Shabbat services on Jan. 21.
WEEKLY RELIGIOUS
SERVICES
The clergy, on what they titled a “Shabbat of Hope,” a day after the presidential inauguration, oversaw the installation of the lay leaders who will govern Tikvat Israel’s affairs
for the next two years. The slate of officers and board members was voted into office at a
congregational meeting on Jan. 8.
Monday 6:45 a.m. 7:30 p.m.
Rabbi Shull, in brief remarks, said it was appropriate that the three vice presidencies
carry responsibilities that affirm the congregation’s basic purposes: prayer, learning and
acts of lovingkindness. “Leadership demands devotion,” he said. “Good leadership is
never automatic.”
Thursday 6:45 a.m. 7:30 p.m.
Cantor Helzner led a song composed by Debbie Friedman titled “Tefilat Haderech,”
also known as the “wayfarer’s prayer.”
6:30 p.m.
Installed as officers were the following: Melanie Grishman, president; Warren Berger,
vice president for administration; James Perlmutter, vice president for programming;
Ellen Kaminow, vice president for youth and family; Stuart Lempert, treasurer; Debby
Berlyne, recording secretary; Gene Sheskin, financial secretary; and Jonathan Solomon,
immediate past president.
Taking office for two-year terms on the board of directors: Alan Apter, Dalit Baranoff,
Michael Cohen, Sally Kram and Frances Tropp.
Also recognized were those who have completed board service: Carol Chelemer,
Irving Cohen, Louis Leibowitz, Rodney Matheson, Helen Raucher, Stephen Raucher
and Elissa Schwartz.
Installed as trustees of the Tikvat Israel Fund for the Future were Irving Cohen,
Harold Diamond, Louis Leibowitz and Stephen Raucher. The fund collects and manages endowment funds for the long-term health of the shul.

Congregants Coordinate Food Pantry
Help at Manna Food Center
Tikvat Israel members have been
volunteering their time to help Manna
Food Center prepare food packages for
Montgomery County residents who are
struggling to afford food, housing and
other basic needs.
Congregants Art and Marsha Fabel
launched the synagogue’s relationship with
the nonprofit agency several months ago
and are coordinating additional volunteer
help among congregants. So far, Tikvat
Israel volunteers have prepared food packages at the Manna warehouse on three
occasions (in November, December and
January). Participants included the Fabels,
Marilyn Greenwood, Michael Greenwood,
the Smith family (Jeff, Ellen, Hannah and
Maya), Judith Davis and the Fabels’ neighbor Pete Xydas.
“I had envisioned that Tikvat Israel
members could be called upon maybe four
times over the year for this program,” Art
Fabel said. “But the volunteers got such
satisfaction out of filling a need that they
asked me, ‘When can we do this again?’”
Preparation for food distribution to
Montgomery County residents is handled
by volunteers seven days a week at Manna.
“There is so much food to organize that
growing the TI group is greatly appreciated
by the Manna staff,” Art Fabel said.
“I know a lot of our members would
prefer doing this on a Sunday. But Sundays
are so popular that they are booked up at
Manna for about three months,” said Fabel,
who added he will schedule a Sunday volunteer session at a later date.
“No preparation is necessary; you just
show up. What we do is similar to unpack-

ing cans and boxes from grocery bags and
placing the food on the appropriate pantry
shelf,” he said.
The work takes place indoors and volunteers should wear comfortable clothing.
Rubber-soled shoes are recommended.
Manna offers snacks, coffee, tea and water
to volunteers. Parking is available in designated volunteer spaces near Manna’s truck
loading dock.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Committees Strengthen
Our Community
BY MELANIE GRISHMAN, TIKVAT ISRAEL PRESIDENT
In the last few Bulletins, I have
told you what the board of directors
has been up to as far as leadership
development and strengthening its
efficiency. This time I will discuss the
role of our committees and the efforts
we plan to take to strengthen them.
Roundup of First
Congregational Meeting of 2017
The first congregational meeting of 2017 gave Tikvat Israel
members a glimpse into the financial state of the synagogue.
The Jan. 8 meeting in the sanctuary also served as the forum
for the election of officers and board of directors' members for the
next two years. (See related story, page 1.)
A summary of other agenda items during the half-hour meeting:
•
We have some committees that are
extremely active and meet regularly.
However, there are some that are not very active.
Treasurer Steve Raucher, in his last budget report before
retiring from the governing board, said operating expenses
were running slightly lower than expected, meaning the
congregation was on target at the middle of the fiscal year
to end with a slight surplus, probably under $10,000.
•
Committees exist to make the work of the organization more
efficient. Here, the skills, talents and interests of the members
can be used to their full advantage. New or less experienced
members can gain insight into the workings of the organization, and the committee facilitates lay leadership development.
Executive Director Sam Freedenberg reported the current
membership at 277 family units. He said only $58,800 of
the total budgeted for membership dues adjustments in
2016-17 ($77,000) had been requested at the midpoint of
the fiscal year, a positive sign.
•
The installation of new overhead lighting in the sanctuary
has been delayed by the slow process for obtaining a modest rebate (about $700) from Pepco for replacing outdated
lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LED lighting. The
facility upgrade had been expected to be finished last August when new carpeting was installed in the sanctuary, but
Freedenberg described the utility company’s rebate process
as “very involved.”
•
New locking mechanisms have been added to the kitchen
doors that lead to the rear outside of the building and to
the social hall, Freedenberg said. Specially coded access
cards will allow only certified mashgiachs plus office staff
and custodial personnel inside the kitchen. Electronic door
cards held by others no longer will allow such access.
Our committees are appointed by the board, and some are
specified in the by-laws. There are two types of committees at
Tikvat Israel. Standing committees — such as adult education,
membership and religious practices — are specific in the by-laws
to function on a permanent basis. An ad hoc committee, such as
the rabbi search committee, is appointed for a specific purpose
and is time limited.
An effective committee meets regularly, communicates well
with each other and with the board, keeps concise and clear
minutes, and regularly evaluates its performance. Each committee
should report to the board on a regular basis so that all are kept up
to date on program planning or problem areas.
Our three vice presidents are currently meeting with the committee chairs to evaluate the committees’ functions and effectiveness. The
last part of our SULAM sessions will focus on committee leadership.
This session is tentatively scheduled for the beginning of April. All
committee chairs will be invited to participate.
In strengthening our board and committee leadership and
effectiveness, we gain a more efficient administration, provide
ways for new members to get involved, and keep renewing our
potential leadership pool.
May we go from strength to strength.
WIRELESS ACCESS @ TI
When you are inside the synagogue and need to connect
to the WiFi, come to the TI office to obtain the current WiFi
code. Using the old guest access code will no longer connect
your device to the Internet inside the shul.

Herman J. Flax Library
Receives Generous Donation
Tikvat Israel’s library committee extends a special thank
you to Oren and Tova Kaplan for their generous donation
to the Herman J. Flax Library in memory of their mother,
Irene Kaplan. Thanks to their contribution, TI’s library was
able to purchase a new laptop, printer, and software needed
to manage the collection.
The library committee plans to enter information about
each book into a spreadsheet that can then be uploaded into
an electronic searchable catalogue. The committee is first
tackling the children’s area by removing non-Judaic titles and
separating out the books that need cataloguing from those
that are already catalogued.
The committee could use your help! If you are interested
in joining, please contact Janice Rosenberg at jzevarosenberg@
yahoo.com or 301-460-1629.

SHULL TO SHUL
A Time for Healing:
Life Lights Pamphlets
and Omer Project 5777
BY RABBI BENJAMIN SHULL
The period between Passover
and Shavuot is known as "Sefirat
Ha'Omer," the counting of the
omer. These 49 days (April 12-May
30) are a time of contemplation; of
reaching in and reaching out. As
you may remember from last year,
Tikvat Israel Congregation, through
our Omer Project, offered several
opportunities during the omer
period for spiritual growth, both individually and communally.
For this year, 5777, we are planning a more focused offering
of programs and study (a full description will be made available
in March). One theme we want to address is refuah or healing
from a Jewish perspective. We will be using our new Life Lights
pamphlets (in memory of Lucille Kram, available in the display
outside the sanctuary,) as the curriculum for a series of discussions on topics that profoundly affect our lives and the lives of
our loved ones.
The topics will range from coping with illness to processing
loss. The tentative titles from our Life Lights pamphlet library for
use in these discussions are:
•
•
•
•
Caring for Yourself When You are Caring for Someone
Who is Ill
Healing Estrangement in Your Family Relationships
Talking to Children about Death
Facing Cancer as a Family
The sessions will be led by me and a volunteer facilitator. We
will hold these discussion sessions on Sunday mornings following
minyan which begins at 9 a.m. (dates with topics to be announced
in March). Each session will last about an hour. We will use the
pamphlets as a basis for discussion, so I encourage everyone to
read the particular pamphlet before the session.
In addition to the discussion sessions, I will devote my dvar
Torah on the Shabbat prior to the Sunday gathering to that particular theme. My hope is that our Life Lights pamphlet library
will help set the tone for our congregation moving forward. Tikvat
Israel has always been a community of caring and sharing, a community in which everyone has something to teach and something
to learn. God willing, we will continue to grow as a community
with the courage to share our triumphs and tragedies and with the
wisdom to know that the best way of navigating the challenging
journey of life is walking hand in hand.

Inspirational Pamphlets on
Daily Challenges
A series of inspirational pamphlets on aspects of daily life
comprise the new Life Lights Library in the lobby of Tikvat Israel.
Produced by rabbis and Jewish educators, the dozen or so
pamphlets address various challenges in our lives, including these:
“Facing and Recovering from Surgery,” “Coping with the Death
of a Spouse,” “Living With Cancer One Day at a Time,” “Making
Sacred Choices at the End of Life,” “Looking Back on Divorce
and Letting Go” and “When Someone You Love is Dying.”
The pamphlets can be found on a table near the sanctuary
entrance. The library, formally dedicated during Shabbat services
on Jan. 21, was funded by Ted and Roz Kram in memory of Ted’s
sister Lucille, who died in 2015.
Bikur Holim
BY HOPE LEVY KOTT
Many thanks to Judy Davis for the fabulous job she has done
organizing and recruiting members for the transportation subcommittee of the Bikur Holim.
Our mission is to help congregants with immediate short-term
needs during and after a medical or family crisis. Our services
include and are not limited to providing meals, friendly visitors,
assistance with shopping, and transportation to medical appointments, shiva houses and shul events.
We are also grateful to the other members of our committee —
Art Fabel, Larry Gorban, and Hilda Springer — for their always
helpful assistance.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Hope Levy
Kott at [email protected].

A Marathon Run and a Personal Goal Fulfilled
BY BEN HERSH
The Marine Corps marathon was my first
marathon. For six years it had been my goal
to compete, even though other than a few fun
runs before this past year, I’d never really been
an enthusiastic runner.
In fall 2010, I began classes and research to
understand the human body; specifically, the effects
of nutrition and physical activity. At 285 lbs. and
standing 5-foot-7, I never really considered these
endeavors for improving the quality of my life. After
delving into the study of these subjects, however, I
added yoga, stretching and meditation to my daily
routine, and sometimes my meditations became
long walks to absorb nature.
It took me six hours and four minutes
to complete my first marathon. As I literally
hobbled across that finish line (I pulled two
muscles within 100 feet of the end), it felt like
a huge weight had been lifted from my back.
I was totally elated – and so utterly exhausted.
I felt as if I could not walk one more step, but
I knew I had to reach the Metro station. If I
stopped and sat, I might not get back up.
When I exited at the Grosvenor station, two
fellow runners got off the train with me. We
all struggled equally in pain and congratulated
each other. We hollered, “WE DID IT!!!”
It has been a journey, for sure. I’m looking
forward to setting another six-year goal.
Fast forward to 2015. I have managed to Ben Hersh shows plenty of energy

nutrition and fitness. Partly I’m motivated to help others achieve
similar changes in their lives, but I also know it will be a lifelong
struggle to keep that weight off. At the Food and Drug Administration, I now teach nine to
14 fitness classes each week, and I have been hired as a part-time
fitness instructor for the City of Rockville. I keep up with my own
personal training as a great way to help myself stay healthy and fit
while simultaneously helping others.
Throughout my six years of losing weight, I had set the lofty
goal of completing not just any marathon, but the Marine Corps
Marathon in particular because of its glamorous reputation. I
didn’t care how long it might take me, so long as I could get to the
point of finishing it.
I began training for the marathon last January with a co-worker
who dared me to enter. Not one to turn down such a challenge,
I had no idea what was really in store. We spent many Sunday
mornings running the Rock Creek trail, and I eventually made it
up to 17 miles.
The day of the marathon in October was intense. Registration
happened easily at the Pentagon the day before the 26-mile race.
That’s where I got my running bib with a tracking chip embedded.
On race day, as the sun rose over Arlington National Cemetery, off
I went with 23,000 fellow competitors.
The first 15 miles were fairly easy, and running past crowds of
cheering onlookers clanking cow bells and waving lots of colorful
signs was fun. The course went all over Arlington, Georgetown,
the Mall, Alexandria and then back to Arlington. The challenge
came as I crossed the dreaded 14th Street Bridge. It seemed neverending, and at one point I didn’t know if I was still in the race
because it all looked the same for almost two miles. The relief of
finally seeing the end of that bridge was palpable, and even better,
a water station was right at the bridge’s end.

ADULT EDUCATION
Israeli Films Come to TI
More than 200 congregants
and guests joined the Adult
Education Committee for the
2017 “Israel Presents: Two Nights
of Israeli Film.” In partnership
with the Israeli Embassy, two
films — Zero Motivation and
Baba Joon — were screened over
two weeks in January. New this
year was Movie and Meze, a
pre-movie offering of Israeli-style
food prepared by TI kitchen
maven Bonnie Cowan.
A post-film dessert
reception featured Molly
Tobin, a cultural affairs
officer with the Israeli
Embassy. Molly’s expertise
in Israeli film and culture
added a perfect note to
both evenings, exploring
two very different topics
— women in the Israeli
military in Zero Motivation
and
intergenerational
conflict among Iranian immigrants to Israel trying to maintain a
family turkey farm in Baba Joon.
The committee thanks all the volunteers — as well as Sam
Freedenberg for his support and guidance — who made this year’s
festival a success.
Share Your Talents with Fellow
Congregants at TI U
Do you have a hidden talent that you’d like to share? The
Adult Education Committee is looking for congregants willing to
participate in a new program, TI U (Tikvat Israel University). TI
U is a day of learning featuring congregants offering TED Talks,
dynamic short talks (about 10 to 20 minutes) about a topic of
interest. Presenters should expect to answer questions after their
TED talks.
WOMEN’S NETWORK
Upcoming Programs
BY REBECCA SALON, TI WOMEN’S NETWORK CO-COORDINATOR
The Tikvat Israel Women’s Network continues to be active
and have lots of engaging events. Women’s Network members
participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. morning of service
with other Tikvat Israel members and congregants from the
Twinbrook Baptist Church; held a book group meeting to discuss
Kaddish: Women’s Voices by Michal Smart and Barbara Ashkenas;
and participated in our first Rosh Chodesh program of the year,
coordinated by Ellen Eisner and led by Rabbah Arlene Berger.
The next book group meeting will be on April 19, immediately
after evening minyan. We will talk about The Translation of Love
by Lynne Kutsukake. The final book for the year will be Souls at
Night by Kent Haruf, which will be discussed on June 14.
Look for an announcement soon about the Women’s Network
Shabbat in May. Also, our annual family baseball outing will be
on Sunday, July 9, when the Nationals host the Atlanta Braves.
The Women’s Network is being co-coordinated by Hilda
Springer, Fortuna Scheige and me. It’s not too late to join the
Women’s Network and to support the Torah Fund. If you don’t
have the forms, please contact one of us. Also, please let us know if
you are interested in helping with any of this year’s events or if you
have suggestions for other activities for the Women’s Network.
Look for information about upcoming activities on the TI
listserv and in B’Kesher.
FISHMAN SPEAKS ON JEWISH LAW
On December 15, 2016, in Tikvat Israel’s Flax Library, Cliff
Fishman gave a presentation titled “While Standing on One
Foot: An Introduction to Jewish Law” to about 30 members of
TI’s HAZAK group. Fishman, a law professor at the Catholic
University of America, provided insights into the sources of
several Jewish laws and customs. He explained how they’ve been
interpreted and applied in various periods, from ancient times
through the modern era.
TI U classes will be about 30 minutes in total, with a few
minutes in between. Participants will be invited to register for the
talks of their choice.
The program will be free; lunch will be offered for a fee.
All congregants are invited to submit suggested topics. The
committee will review submissions and select presenters who offer
the greatest diversity. Whether you know something about canning, fixing a car, motivating people or fashion, submit your idea
to Sally Kram ([email protected]).

Several dates on a Sunday later in the spring are under consideration for TI U. Be part of it!

EDUCATION AND YOUTH
Fostering Community and
Friendships
BY LUISA MOSS, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AND YOUTH
Typically, my 5th- and 6th-grade students,
whom I teach on Wednesdays, are eager to
dart down the hall to the youth lounge during a 10-minute break from class. Recently,
one of my students stopped at an ECC
classroom and stuck his head in. Curious,
I observed. He had noticed a buddy from
Shabbat mornings and was stopping in to say hello. This moment
warmed my heart and illuminated what synagogue involvement
is about: community. These two young people have a special
relationship that our congregation has fostered. Seeing each other
in the kids’ corner at the back of the sanctuary during services or
sitting together at Shabbat lunches has created a friendship among
these two youngsters, approximately eight years apart, that might
not otherwise have formed.
This kind of friendship is an example of one of my goals as
a Jewish educator. I want our youth to come here for exciting
programming, but also because they look forward to seeing their
friends. Our USYers are working on plans to make the youth
lounge a more inviting place for kids to come and hang out,
whether for a USY event or after services. Atid Learning Center
students have a break in the middle of the morning so that they
can have the opportunity to play and get to know one another a
little bit more. Each of our Shabbat programs offers ways for our
youth to come together and build community.
In the coming weeks, the Rabbi and I are working on planning
programming for parents to allow them to come together and get
to know each other and build their own community. Tikvat Israel
is a place to learn and pray, and possibly most importantly, to
build friendships.

SIMCHA KIDDUSH CAKE
The ancient rabbis understood the important dynamics of
friendship, and that friendship can cultivate strong personal development. “Come and learn–which is the straight [right] path to
which a person should adhere? A good friend.” (Avot 2:13). With
this in mind, keep coming to the wonderful opportunities Tikvat
Israel offers, and may they lead you to good friends.
Thank you to all the parents, youth and Tikvat Israel staff
who made Youth Shabbat a success. Gratitude is extended to the
donors who supported and helped enhance our Shabbat kiddush,
and a special shout-out goes to Austin Kaminow, who assigned
parts for the service.
RECYCLING CARTRIDGES AND PHONES
Do you have used printer cartridges or old cell phones? You
can help Tikvat Israel and the environment at the same time by
bringing these items in to the shul office. TI staff can turn these
items into cash to support our programs. Contact staff member
Marla Sevi ([email protected] or 301-762-7338) for more
details.
TIKVAT ISRAEL MARCH-APRIL 2017

Cowan, kitchen coordinator, contributions from individuals and couples
being recognized and their family members underwrite the cost. To help

Crossing the Divide:
YOM HASHOAH IN WHITWELL, TENNESSEE
Our congregation is organizing, with Beth Joshua Congregation
and Rabbi Uri Topolosky, a trip to Whitwell, Tennessee, the site of
the film documentary, "Paperclips." We will travel there together
on April 23-24, which is Yom HaShoah.
The goal of the trip is to bear witness to an incredible Holocaust
memorial created in this small town, and to meet the individuals
behind its creation and implementation. The trip will offer a window
into a part of our country very different from our own, affording
us the opportunity for important dialogue on some of the pressing
issues of today.
Participants will arrange their own round-trip travel to Atlanta,
and overnight stay in Atlanta, although we will provide suggestions. A participation fee will be announced to cover shared costs
of food and bus transportation.
For more information, please contact Rabbi Shull at 301-7627338 or [email protected].

Congregants Thanked for Support
On behalf of the Balin and Buff families, we would like to
thank our Tikvat Israel family for not only providing a wonderful Shabbat dinner, but an outpouring of support at the Shiva
Minyanim at our home for my dad (Fred Buff), who passed away
in early January. We have been members of Beth Tikva/Tikvat Israel for 31
years, and always knew that we belonged to a special congregation, but this past week reminded us of how truly fortunate we are
to be part of this caring community.
A special thank you to Rabbi Shull and Cantor Helzner for
their extra special support during this difficult time.
Janice and Bob Balin Dear fellow congregants,
As I pass the shloshim attached to my mother’s recent death, I
find myself reflecting on the arduous road traveled this past January.
Although I deal with these issues professionally as a pediatrician,
and I went through the loss of my father nearly 20 years earlier, my
mother’s death hit me much harder than I ever anticipated.
Thankfully, I was awash with love and support from friends
from near and far. In particular, I am very grateful to all at Tikvat
Israel who provided their attendance at the shiva minyans at our
house, the kind gifts of food and contributions in my mother’s
memory, as well as just the kind words and hugs given in passing.
My family is truly blessed to be a part of the Tikvat Israel family

TIKVAT ISRAEL MARCH-APRIL 2017
Passover Home Hospitality
This year, Passover seders will be held on Monday, April 10, and Tuesday, April 11. As we begin our seders, we
say, “All who are hungry, let them come and eat.” It is said that Abraham and Sarah placed such great importance
on welcoming others that they kept the walls of their tents open so that they could see potential guests from a long
way off and “run” to prepare for them. At Tikvat Israel, we strive to emulate the example of our ancestors and offer
members of our community the opportunity to be either a host or a guest at a Passover seder.
If you do not have a seder to go to, or if you have room at your seder for others, please fill out the form by March
30 and return it to the office or contact Hope Levy Kott at 301-921-8268. Completed forms may also be sent to
[email protected].
Hosts, please let us know if your home is handicap accessible (no stairs at the entrance, seder area all on one level,
wheelchair would fit in bathroom, grab bars available, etc.).
Thank you in advance for participating in our shared celebrations.

Church Joins TI on MLK Day
Service Project
About 100 members of Twinbrook Baptist Church and Tikvat Israel gathered at TI on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a service
project. Congregants young and old made sandwiches and trays of baked lasagna, and filled delivery bags with personal hygiene
products and household supplies to donate to our neighbors in need. The church’s pastor, the Rev. Jill McCrory, and Rabbi Ben
Shull briefly addressed the volunteers, who joined together over bowls of warm lentil soup and bread after completing the projects.
