Grade Five Working With Words #15: Suffixes With - ity, - ty, and -y
The suffixes -y, -ty, -ity are added to many adjectives to form nouns. Sometimes an
adjective loses a letter when the suffix is added. For example:

sincerity** (drop the e before adding -ity)

6 Proofread and correct. Paul wrote a story set in nature. Correct the
mistakes he made: four spelling errors, two punctuation errors, and one
capitalization error. Correct them.
The mother raccoon approached the
small stream. Her babies followed with
curiousity, their noses twitching theyd
never been here before. They were thersty.
Suddenly, their mother saw a fox. She
needed to get her activ children to the other
side of the stream. She nudged her loyel
children onto her back, and she swam to the
far bank. She knew the fox would not
follow. Foxes hate water.
Tip: When you form
contractions, remember
that an apostrophe
replaces the letter or
letters that you leave
out.
7. Write a narrative.
Write a short description of an event that could take place
in a story about an animal that faces a problem. Set your
story in nature or in a city. What kind of problems might an
animal face in either of those places? Use your list words and some
contractions to make your writing interesting and descriptive.
