National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the more
than 100,000 children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families.
This annual, one-day event has made the
dreams of thousands of children come
true by working with policymakers, practitioners and advocates to finalize adoptions and create and celebrate adoptive
families. Today, National Adoption Day is
celebrated nationwide annually on the
Saturday before Thanksgiving as hundreds of events are held to finalize the
adoptions of children in foster care, and to
celebrate all families who adopt.

Facts: There are an estimated 402,378 children in foster care in the United States,
and more than 100,000 of them are waiting to be adopted. • Through no fault of

donment. • The average child waits for an
adoptive family for nearly four years. • 13
percent spend 5 years or more waiting for
a family (13,217 children). • The average
age of children waiting for an adoptive
family is 8 years old. ● More than 22,000
children reach the age of 18 without ever
finding a forever family.
Maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise to
us that many adoptees have gone on to
lead extraordinary lives. Maybe the fact
that their parents were very intentional
about choosing to raise them molded
them in a way that other children don’t
always experience. Whatever the reason,
children who are adopted have many
sources of inspiration and big footsteps to
follow behind: singers and entertainers
like Eric Clapton, Nat King Cole, Kristin
Chenoweth, Jamie Foxx, Faith Hill, John

Crystal Gardley was very thankful
and shocked when she heard her
name called as our Employee of the
Month for September. “When you
love what you do, it shows in your
work, and that alone is rewarding
enough. You don’t expect anything
in return,” she said.
Crystal has been a Residential Aide
at Piner’s Guest Home for six years.

October began with a special Oktoberfest
feast on the 1st, with bratwurst, sauerkraut,
potatoes, and a delicious German apple
cake.
Stephanie treated us to Apple Brown Bettys
on October 5.
We celebrated the Fluffernutter, that delicious, sticky sandwich of peanut butter and
marshmallow fluff, on October 8. Dr. Hartman took the title for eating the most Fluffernutters—they’re his favorite!

which can get lonely sometimes. But fortunately, there
are always a couple of Elders who are “night owls” to
keep her company. “Their family stories and memories
make me feel like a part of their family.” She enjoys being able to get to know a wide range of Elders and hear
their stories.
Ever since she got her first job in high school, Crystal has
been collecting tennis shoes. “I have tennis shoes that
I’ve never worn that just stay in the box in my closet. My
family thinks I’m crazy because I’ll camp out in front of
the mall when there are new shoe releases,” she laughed.
Crystal grew up in Vallejo with her brother and three
sisters. “My favorite childhood memories are all the
summer vacations to Hawaii to visit my older sister and
grandparents.” She and her siblings loved being able to
play outside and go to the beach.
Thanks, Crystal, for all of your care and hard work! Congratulations!

into and some of us start out in a much tougher place
than other people. But just because we started there
doesn’t mean we have to end there.” – Michael Oher

enjoyed our delectable Pumpkin Cheesecakes on October 21.
October 23 was National Boston Cream Pie
Day, and yes we did enjoy them very much!
Our pumpkin decorating session took place
on October 26, just in time for Elders to
pretty up their pumpkins for Halloween.
We had a scary good time at our Halloween
parties on October 30. The highlight of the
parties (at both the Nursing Home and
Guest Home) were the Frankenstein Cakes.
