Preschool News
Literacy development is a vital part of each child’s overall development. Before children learn to read and write,
they need to develop the building blocks for literacy – the ability to speak, listen, understand, watch and draw. As
they get older, children also need to learn about the connection between letters on a page and spoken sounds. For
this to happen, they need plenty of experience with:

pictures and objects – how you can use words to talk about them

letters and words – their shapes, sounds and names

sounds – how words can rhyme, begin and end with the same letters, be broken up into parts like
syllables, be formed by blending different sounds and so on.
Every day at Preschool is filled with a range of early literacy development. Talk is promoted through
communicating with your child in daily discussions, peer play, circle times, dramatic play opportunities and a range
of oral language games such as ‘What’s in the box?’ Sound skills are developed through playing with rhymes,
clapping syllables, singing and word games. Children are immersed in books; ones they are read, ones they listen
to on cd’s and follow along with a book, as well as independent book times after lunch and morning tea every day,
where children select their own book to look through.
The preschoolers have also been identifying their name each day as they arrive at preschool, writing their own
name to label their drawings and work, investigating symbolic mark making in Aboriginal art, writing notes in the
café play area and having a go at writing ‘mum’ on their card for Mother’s Day.

Kindergarten News
The kinder students have loved reading possum magic. This wonderful Australian folktale shares delicious
vocabulary that allows students to interact with context clues and text-evidence throughout the story. Students
have been charmed by participating in multi-tiered activities.
Students have created a range of artistic pictures to represent their understandings of the text as well as their
favourite pages and characters from the texts. Students have been given the opportunity to discuss what they think
of the text and how it relates to their own feelings and emotions about familiar experiences and memories.
As a class we have investigated the map of Australia, including the different states and territories. We have
revisited the journey taken by Hush and Grandma Poss. We discussed the icons that were present during the
Journey. The students have loved reading about the quest of Grandma and Hush cross the Australian countryside
in search of specific Aussie food that will make Hush visible again. Next week the students will have an opportunity
to sample a variety of these classic 'Australian' foods that have become endearing parts of Aussie culture.

Year 1 News
This term we are looking at non-fiction text and working towards writing our own information reports. We walked
through the school looking for labels and discovering how they differ from signs. Hopefully you are seeing us
borrowing more non-fiction books from the library. This is one of our research tools to prepare us for writing facts.
It has been so exciting to see how confident year 1s are getting when they are sharing their weekly news. More
and more students are coming with little notes, showing us they are preparing at home. We are trying to remember
to keep eye contact on our audience and to speak with a loud and clear voice to enhance engagement.
A special thanks to Mark, Will Gregory’s dad, for coming into 1L to showing us how to keep safe on escalators and
elevators. We showed beautiful listening bodies during the presentation and had interesting questions and
answers.
We now have interest based readers available for students to take home in their home reading pouches. These
books are a great opportunity to prompt discussions about our favourite books, authors and illustrators.
As always, feel free to come and see us with any successes or concerns you may have.

There is a large amount of unnamed lost property on the table
outside the front foyer. Please have a look and take what is yours.
Any uncollected items will be disposed of next week.
Year 2 News
Year 2 have jumped straight into our new writing text form for the term ‘Writing to Inform’. Students have been
exploring the structure and language features of an Information report through Modelled reading time by exploring
a range of non-fiction texts such as Diary Of a Caterpillar and Diary of a Tadpole. Students have reconstructed
information reports into the following sequence- Title, Opening Statement, Description, Concluding Statement and
Annotated Diagram. We have also explored conjunctions and technical vocabulary. In the coming weeks Year 2
will write a class Information report about Fadden Primary School. By the end of the term students will write an
information report independently of an animal of their choice.
This term in Reading we are focusing on the reading strategies of questioning, summarising and paraphrasing,
skimming, consulting a reference, inferring, connecting and determining importance. These are all important
reading strategies needed when researching topics; a skill students will need to write their own information
reports. These strategies will be explored during modelled, shared and guided reading time.
Students are continuing to explore spelling strategies through modelled reading and during writing activities.
Students also work on weekly individualised spelling sorts.

Year 3 & 4 News
We have had a productive and busy start to the term and would like to congratulate all the year 3 students who
participated in NAPLAN last week.
This term the students have continued to participate in Guided Reading and have been focussing on determining
importance. This strategy helps students to identify keywords, phrases and sentences that are the most important,
particularly when reading information texts. It has been fantastic to see the students engage in small group
discussions to determine and highlight the most important pieces of information within the text that they are
reading. Next week the students will be introduced to skimming and scanning.
Determining importance will also benefit the students writing as we will be exploring and creating information texts.
As part of our writing program we will discuss the difference between a narrative and informative text, introduce the
purpose and types and identify and explore the structure of an information text. Students will also have the
opportunity to research websites on the chromebooks to write an information text on a given topic.
We would also like to congratulate all the year 3/4 students for writing and presenting a fantastic speech for
Rostrum. It was fantastic to see every student stand up and have a go, which demonstrates our school value of
confidence. We would also like to wish all our students proceeding to the school final the very best of luck.

Year 5/6 News
In 5/6 students have recently written Rostrum speeches and have presented their 3 minute speech to their
supportive class audience. A number of talented speakers advanced to the next stage and delivered their
speeches at the school finals on Thursday afternoon. We have so many confident and articulate public speakers –
well done everyone!
Our current writing focus is on developing description in narrative using a range of adjectives, adverbs and
figurative language devices. Using our five senses and imagining what a character sees, feels, hears, smells and
tastes is a great tool for developing vivid description and effectively ‘showing’ the reader our narrative through
careful word choice. Looking at examples from great literature, we are able to see effective characterisation.
Using the STEAL acronym helps remind us how we can build a clear understanding of our character: Speech,
Thoughts, Effects, Actions & Looks.
We have learnt the 4 key roles in our Reciprocal Reading program, including predicting, clarifying, questioning &
summarising. In the program, we read short texts and apply the 4 roles individually. We then meet with our
discussion group to share our analysis of the text. Many students have commented that they prefer the structure
of this reading program and like the critical discussions.

EXPERIENCE A NEW CULTURE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND
LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE AT HOME
In January 2017 students from over 25 countries around the world, will be arriving in Australia to
study at local high schools for 3-10 months.
Opportunities exist for families to act as a host family, in a volunteer capacity. Hosting can be on a
temporary, short or long term basis.
Host families help provide international students with the chance to study and experience life in
Australia.
This is a great way to learn about another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in
another country and contribute to international goodwill.
If your family can offer a friendly, supportive and caring home environment, contact us today.
