bad? Did the result include any surprising or unintended consequences?
Meet David, The King After God’s Heart
2 Samuel is manly about one person, King David. So if we are going to spend a long time studying
this book we need to start with a little background on the man. Today’s is going to be a quick
overview of 1 Samuel as we look at 4 snapshots of David’s life leading up to him being crowned
king.
Snapshot #1 – The Annointing
Have someone read 1 Samuel 16:1 & vv. 11-13.
At the tender age of 15-16 a young shepherd is anointed king, but Israel already had a KING!!!
However, King Saul was a man who cut corners on obedience to God because he was more
fearful of people than he was of God. In the end, this is why God reject Saul as king (see 1 Sam
15:22-23).
3. Imagine a young man today, being told that he is the rightful Prime Minister of Canada.
How might he respond? How great is the temptation to cut corners, after such a promise
from God?
Snapshot #2 – The Idiot’s Wife

4. Think back to a time in your life when you took matters into your own hands (for better
or worse). Did leave you with any regrets? If you had regrets would it have turned out
better if you had not
Snapshot #3 - The Opportunity
Throughout the final years of Saul’s life, he became obsessed with capturing David who
threatened his royal legacy. David and his men live as fugitives for years. There were plenty of
close calls like the one found in 1 Samuel 26.
Have someone read 1 Samuel 26:6-12.
5. How hard a decision would this have been for David? How have you responded in the
past when given the opportunity to get retribution? What was the long term impact of
your response?
Snapshot #4 - The King is dead, long live the King!

6. As you look at the coming year, what situations are you facing which force you to wait?
Roadblocks? Sickness? Enemies? What do you think it will take to give these over to God
as you wait?
7. How can we support each other and help each other avoid taking shortcuts as we wait on
God?
