We are delighted to be able to spill the
beans about this year’s Festival, which will be
welcoming over 100 authors, poets, dramatists,
artists and filmmakers to Essex throughout March.
These include the wonderful poet and crime writer
Sophie Hannah, the iconic comic poet Pam Ayres,
the multi-award winning author and politician Alan
Johnson, and ‘Richard and Judy’s’ Judy Finnigan
who will be interviewed by husband Richard. The
journalist and documentary maker Jon Ronson of
‘Men Who Stare At Goats’ fame will also be joining us,
as will the writer Jessie Burton who will be reading
from her debut novel, The Miniaturist, and the ever
popular performance poet, Luke Wright.
This year we have decided to give the Festival a
theme: METAMORPHOSIS. We chose this for a number
of reasons. Firstly, we wanted to acknowledge our
fabulous partnership with the University of Essex,
the new home for the Festival office. The University
is in the midst of its 50th anniversary celebrations.
Some of its special events form part of the Festival
programme, including the OUT OF ESSEX: POETRY
and OUT OF ESSEX: THEATRE days.
Thirdly, we are very pleased to be working with
Southend Libraries on this year’s Festival. Essex
Libraries have been and remain the backbone of
the Festival, and so it is great to have Southend
on board for 2015 too. Likewise, we are equally
pleased to be hosting a number of exciting events
at the end of Southend Pier, another new venue
for 2015.
Finally, the Essex Book Festival is about YOU.
We have worked hard to create an inspiring,
challenging and entertaining programme that has
something for everyone. We hope that we have
succeeded. Now it’s up to you to let us know how
we’ve done and to tell us what you would like to see
in the future. Please visit our website to have your
say: www.essexbookfestival.org.uk
Enjoy!
Ros Green
Director, Essex Book Festival
Secondly, we have introduced a number of new
‘strands’ into the programme. These include our
series of ‘Art Talks’, which will be launched by artist
Maggi Hambling, plus a new ‘Human Rights’ strand
that will be spearheaded by Shami Chakrabarti,
Director of Liberty. This will be followed by an
evening of ‘Wild Writing’ at Belfair’s Wildlife
Woodland Centre with authors Melissa Harrison
and Katherine Norbury.
Essex Book Festival gratefully acknowledges the support of these key partners

Annual Burrows Lecture: SHOPGIRLS
A Nomad’s Tale: Travels in the Sahel
Professor Pamela Cox
Alistair Carr
This year’s Annual Burrows Lecture at the University of Essex will be given
by Professor Pamela Cox and will draw on her new book (co-authored with
Annabel Hobley), Shopgirls: The True Story of Life Behind the Counter. The book
was written to accompany her recent BBC television series of the same name.
Sharing true stories of the unsung heroines behind the counters of Britain’s
stores - from the world of Mr Selfridge to the world of Mr Sainsbury - this
enlightening account is also the story of sexual equality, shopping, camaraderie
and class. Pamela Cox grew up in Southend and now lives in Colchester.
The Manga is one of Africa’s most remote and wild regions inhabited by nomads,
like the hardy Tubu. Situated in south-eastern Niger, and in the shadow of the
Old Salt Road, it has been mislaid by the modern world; no westerner had been
seen there in living memory. Alistair Carr talks about his journey across this
inhospitable land, with former Tubu rebels, at a time of Tuareg rebellion.

Just after 9/11, US Vice-President Dick Cheney invoked the need for the USA to
work ‘the dark side’ in its global ‘War on Terror’. In her book Cinema of the Dark

I Do Not Sleep
Luke Wright
Judy Finnigan (in conversation with Richard Madeley)
Decadent boozehound Luke Wright would love to spend his life flouncing
around looking fabulous, but back in rural Suffolk he’s got the school run to do.
Naval-gazing is all very well, but other people can be magic. In visceral verse,
Wright tells stories of ordinary people having extraordinary moments. And he’s
no sartorial slouch either.
Judy Finnigan is a bestselling author, television presenter and columnist. In
2004, her name became synonymous with discovering and sharing great fiction,
through the Richard and Judy Book Club. Her first novel, Eloise, was a Sunday
Times Top Ten bestseller in hardback and paperback. Judy’s new novel, I Do Not
Sleep, is the haunting, and wonderfully moving story of the enduring power of a
mother’s love.
“One of the funniest and most brilliant poets of his generation.”
