NEWSLETTER – No.13 – 9th August 2016
Dear Parents,
The Aboriginal word Wakakirri means ‘to dance a story’ according to Wangaaypuwan people from Cobar,
NSW.
A HUGE congratulations to all of the grade 5 and 6 students who participated in the Wakakirri story
dance challenge on Monday 8th August. Wakakirri is all about using movement to tell a story and tell a
story we did! We came up with something original and you all did a fantastic job to convey our message
and give everyone something to think about.
Some of our judging feedback included;
 Clear story
 The story made everyone feel something - which is what a good story should do
 We improved a lot based on our rehearsal notes
 They liked how the ending left it hanging and also asked the audience to question themselves.
So again, congratulations to all of our talented drama club students! Here are some photos from the day.

Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On Monday 15th is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this
is also our school feast day. We will begin the day with a whole school mass at
10.15am lead by Father Peter. Students will also throughout the day have
sessions to learn more about who Mary was and why she is special to the
Catholic community.
As part of our feast day we raise money to donate to a charity. This year each
grade level can donate a coin to guess how many lollies are in the lolly jar. This
will run Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th August. All money raised this year will go to
a local charity ‘Open Doors’ which supports Aboriginal students in Catholic schools
to access education.

FEAST OF MARY OF THE CROSS
This week we celebrate the Feast of Mary of the Cross. Australia’s first saint. We reflect on
Mary Mackillop’s tremendous achievements in education and work in the community
throughout Australia over a hundred years ago. She often worked under the most difficult
and challenging circumstances. Mary Mackillop’s endurance, coupled with her compassion
and leadership touched many people’s lives, leaving a legacy that endures today. Mary
bought the message of human dignity to all she encountered. May we all follow Mary’s
example of faith, commitment in these times of change and uncertainty.
Prayer
Holy God, source of all goodness, you show us in Mary Mackillop a
woman of faith who lived by the power of the cross. Teach us to
embrace what she pioneered: new ways of living the gospel that
respect and defend the dignity of all in our land.
Amen

CHILD SAFE STANDARDS
Recently 'Child Safe Standards' were introduced into Victorian legislation. This new
legislation builds on the strong practices that already exist at OLA to ensure the
safety and wellbeing of our students.
We, as a school, along with all schools, must comply with a range of actions which
arise from Ministerial Order no 870. In ensuring our compliance with this order, we
at OLA take account of the diversity of all children, including Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Island children, children from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds,
children with disabilities and children who are vulnerable in any way. We will make
every reasonable effort to accommodate these children.
Over the coming weeks we will keep you informed in respect to policies, procedures
and strategies undertaken to embed a culture of child safety at our school, including
the roles and responsibilities for achieving the strategies and how these strategies
will be put into practice.
Our commitment to child safety includes all school environments (such as camps
and excursions) and Out of School Hours programs.

MATHS AT OLA
Thank you to everyone who took up the challenge and
participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition on
Thursday 28th July. We had a total of 76 students from grades 36 participate in an hour long test in the hall. The test was a great
way of children seeing a variety of questions ranging from less
challenging to highly complicated. Next term, children will
receive a certificate of participation from the Australian
Mathematics Trust.
Congratulations to all students for participating.
Here is a question taken from the Middle test booklet for you to try at home:
A zoo keeper weighed some of the animals at the Zoo. He found that the lion weighs
90kg more than the leopard, and the tiger weighs 50kg less than the lion. Altogether the
animals weigh 310kg. How much does the lion weigh?
a) 180kg
b) 150kg
c) 140kg
d) 130kg
e) 100kg
Now a question taken from the Senior test booklet:
Quiang, Rory and Sophia are each wearing a hat with a number on it. Each adds the
two numbers on the other two hats, giving totals of 11, 17 and 22. What is the largest
number on a hat?

FAMILY MATHS NIGHT
Thank you to everyone who attended the very successful Family Maths night. We ended up
having 86 lolly jar guesses, congratulations goes to Drew Ramselaar (father of Molly PKM)
with a guess of 275 lollies. There were 285 in the jar and Drew was the closest without
going over. We hope you were able to get some ideas of activities you can you at home to
practise Maths. If your child was using Rainforest Maths on the computer, don’t forget that
they can access this at home on a PC when children log onto Mathletics. Also on Mathletics
children can access the Table Tunes, a great way to practise tables for students in grades
3-6.
