A SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER
AT ST. GEORGE’S
I
t’s starting to feel a bit like fall out there on the golf course, but for the
most part a perfect summer continued throughout September, which
meant a super busy month at the club.
Social events including; Wine, Dine and Sax and the September Gastro
Wine Club dinner with French winemaker Jean-Luc Colombo had waiting
lists while, on the golf course members and guests enjoyed some terrific
events.
The Ladies’ Captain’s Choice Charity Cup raised $17,000 for the Alzheimer
Society of Toronto and the Ladies’ Member-Member Championship went to
a playoff, while the Mixed Member Invitational returned after a decade-plus
absence and the men hosted the one-day fall invitational.

LADIES’ CAPTAIN’S CHOICE CHARITY CUP
I
t was a good day. It’s always a good day at the Ladies’ Captain’s
Choice Charity Cup! This year’s fun-filled event was enjoyed by
70 ladies as members and many guests toured St. George’s for
nine holes of easy-going, game-filled golf on a beautiful September
8th morning followed by a wonderful lunch in the St. George’s Room
and an exciting silent auction in the Founders’ Room.
“I was so pleased to see such a strong turnout for the Captain’s
Choice Charity Cup,” says event convenor and Ladies’ Captain,
Karen Winter. “The generosity of both our male and female members
and their guests helped to raise about $17,000 after expenses for
Alzheimer Society.”
With 60-plus silent auction items, as well as a live auction for a
wine and appetizer pairing evening with Corey and Chef James
and exciting bidding for the golf professionals who play with the
ladies in the Double C Cup, this year’s fundraiser topped Winter’s
expectations.
“For the past decade my family has been greatly impacted by

Alzheimer. My mother and dad and father-in-law have all endured
different forms of dementia, and Alzheimer is one of those,” Winter
says. “Alzheimer Society has helped my family deal with the disease
through education, advice, support programs and really great resources.” Everywhere Winter and her husband Michael turn, they
meet people who are dealing with loved ones who are suffering from
dementia and fading memories. She is also aware that as we all age,
that we might be personally impacted as well.
“I know they’re getting closer to finding a cure for Alzheimer and
I hope to see that in my lifetime,” Winter says, noting 50 per cent of
the money raised at St. George’s will go to research and the other
50 per cent will go to support programs in the Etobicoke community
through the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.
The Back loop winners included the team of; Linda MacDonald,
Karen Winter, Sally Donovan and Joan MacDonald, while on the
Front loop the top score of the day went to the team of; Sue Dowling,
Erin Spence, Lynn Campbell and Kathleen Flynn.

went to Tom and Kathy McLeod and Dave and Vicki Thompson and
fifth place to Louis and Louise Lacchin and Paul and Roz Martin.
“I thought we had a great turnout for the first year that we
brought it back and we look forward to building on it for 2017,” says
Past Men’s Captain and co-convenor, Louis Lacchin. “I heard positive remarks about the format. Maybe next year we could try
something different other than the scramble. Everyone loved the
BBQ at the putting green, the poker hand was fun and the food was
great.”
“It’s a great way to bring out friends or spouses who don’t play
a lot of golf and let them enjoy an afternoon at the club,” says Past
Ladies’ Captain and co-convenor, Matina Elsey. “The weather was
perfect, the golf course was in amazing condition and the food was
fabulous, so I only see better things to come in the future.”
fter a decade-plus absence from the golfing calendar, the
Mixed Member Invitational returned to St. George’s in September. Great summer-like weather greeted our guests as
84 people teed it up for 18 holes of golf and dinner on Sunday, September 18th.
“It was a great format, lots of fun and our guests had a terrific
time,” says Doug Stirling, who teamed up with his wife Mona and
their long-time friends Jim Ronalds and Lily Bracic-Ronalds to win
the invitational with a team score of 90. “It’s great to have this
event back. It’s not stressful at all and it’s a great way to enjoy the
club with some friends.”
Four teams finished with an identical score of 92 as teams
played a front-nine two-net best ball and back nine scramble.
Through retrogression second place went to the team of James

J
ust as they were sitting down to lunch on the Upper Verandah last Sunday,
Tracey Pappas, Kathy McLeod, Lynn Benson and Debbie Hawkey received
the bad news.
There was going to be a playoff for The Humphrey Schneider Trophy for the
Ladies’ Member-Member Two-Ball Championship – and they were going to be the
stars of the show – no retrogression to decide a winner for this impressive trophy!
So they left their plates, with food waiting to be eaten, and headed out to No. 1
for the sudden-death playoff. It was Pappas and McLeod vs. Benson and Hawkey
as it had been for the entire second round. On day one the two teams trailed teams
of Kathleen Flynn and Lynn Campbell and Connie Bredt and Beverley Rook by a single stroke, but on Day Two the tide turned.
Pappas/McLeod and Benson/Hawkey started the second round tied; they were
tied after nine holes and 18 holes. They even managed to tie the first playoff hole,
but on No. 2 Benson/Hawkey pulled of their first-ever victory in the event as a team.
“Both our usual partners couldn’t make it this year, so we decided to team up
and it was a lot of fun,” especially playing against Kathy and Tracey in the final
round and then in the playoff,” says “Laser Lynn”, who carded birdies on No. 2 and
No. 13 to keep her team in it.
“I never thought coming into the clubhouse after our round that we would be
the winners,” Hawkey says. “You certainly feel the nerves in a playoff, but it was
just a whole lot of fun.”
The team of Campbell/Bredt settled for third place – and yes, lunch was delicious – just took a little longer to finish it than expected!

“This is the best event of the year at St. George's. The wine merchants who take part represent some great wines and not all of
which are expensive. We usually end up buying at least two cases
of wine after tasting several varieties of wines, says Brian Greatrix.
“The wine merchants are extremely helpful. Often, the wine we ordered is delivered to our house within a day. And all of the wines
are usually those that can't be found at the LCBO. The food that
James and his team put together is excellent. Through collaboration
with Corey, we get to taste world-class wines with top of the class
food choices.”
hirty plus members and guests enjoyed a sold out Gastro Wine
Club dinner with celebrated French winemaker Jean-Luc
Colombo on September 20th along with an amazing five-course
dinner prepared by Executive Chef James Saunders and his kitchen
team!
QUOTES:
“We bought lots of wines, everything about the evening was exceptionable, as good or better than any restaurant in the city would
do, says Mike and Krista Cardiff, who try to attend every wine dinner
at the club and already have reservations for the upcoming dinner on
October 20th. It was very special to be included at Jean-Luc
Colombo’s table for the dinner. I learned a lot about his philosophy in
how he approaches wine making. All the wines were great. Really
enjoyed the comparison of the same wine from two different vintages
and his explanation as to how he blended based upon the weather
those years. I think without a doubt Chef James and his team did an
amazing job. Best ever dinner at St G’s! Keep it up Chef!”

“I really do believe that staff enjoys this event too. While they are
always excellent, I think they treat this as a special event too,”
Greatrix adds. “When this event started several years ago, we had
40 or 50 people come to Wine, Dine and Roll. Word seemed to get
around quickly and the event seems to attract as many people as we
can put into the St. George's and Founders’ Rooms. I hope we continue to have a Wine, Dine and Sax event for many years to come.”

WINE, DINE & SAX SOOTHES THE SOUL
T
he evening was a great success! The hallway décor was particularly creative and artistic consisting of wood skids and flowers, says Roy and Olenka Wasley. Chef James prepared many
high-quality, unusual and creative dishes to accompany the assortment of wines on display. The live music was delightful and entertaining - relaxing and fun! Once again, the evening was executed with
panache and success and enjoyed by all! Congratulations to all who
put on a great show!
Congratulations on a great evening! This was probably the best
Wine, Dine and Sax to date. I don’t know how you keep making it better, but it certainly was a very successful evening. Great job, says Gina
Baldoni and Donald McLean
The highlight of the evening was simply enjoying the great ambiance
within the clubhouse and watching fellow members and their families
and friends truly enjoying themselves with the sounds of the saxophone
in the background, says George Yotis. There was a great selection of
wines and excellent food pairings from Chef James and his team . . .
unbelievable value - the best in the city. We are so fortunate to have
Corey’s knowledge, passion and industry relationships. Everyone I have
chatted with, who attended this event, was extremely positive in their
comments. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event!
The set up this year was perfect. There were wine and food sta-
tions on every level and in every room, along with places to sit and
relax with friends while enjoying the music especially the singer who
had a beautiful voice, says Frank Palermo and Marcia Hewson. This
is a great event. Other members agree that this is one of the best of
the year. The highlight of the evening was the exceptional food. Congratulations to our staff.
I was supposed to have been out of town but my travel was delayed a day so I, fortunately, was able to join my spouse, Matina for
this event. I was most pleased in this delay because this event is one
of our favourites. Even better the 2016 version exceeded our expectations, says Scott Elsey. The food stations were better than ever.
Spreading out the stations made for a very relaxing evening as we
were able to easily move from food or wine station to the next. Finally,
the wines presented were just excellent and the education accompanying each was welcomed by me. Learned a lot, ate a lot and drank
a little. What could be better?
This was my first time attending Wine, Dine & Sax and I really enjoyed it, says Marla Cosburn. It was great value for the price point
and interesting learning about various wineries that I hadn't tried before and finding a few new favourites! The food was fantastic and
paired well with the assortment of wine. The music was a perfect addition to the evening and I'll definitely be back.

GASTRO WINE CLUB:
WINES OF VALENCISO
TO BE UNCORKED
e are very excited to be hosting and pouring
the wines of Valenciso from the Rioja region of
Spain on October 20th.
Winemaker, Diego Santana will be on hand and
present a pre-dinner Master Class to discuss his passion for the region of Rioja and the sought after wines
of Valenciso. Diego will then speak about the different
oaks that Valenciso uses and the characteristics associated with them. We will taste three wines aged
in different oak and everyone will try to guess the
matching pairs. It is a fun exercise in Wine 101!
For dinner, Chef James and his team of passionate
cooks will focus on the cuisine of the area to help
highlight the outstanding wines Diego has crafted.
“This region has been making wines for generations, and I feel that the resurgence of this area is
one to keep a close eye on,” says Corey Ladouceur,
St. George’s Sommelier and Clubhouse Manager.
“Still holding value and curiosity with the wine
drinker, Valenciso is a winery that I have really enjoyed learning about and offering to our members.
Some of the wines we will pour have never been offered for purchase!”

MYSTERIOUS CREATURES LURKING
We’re about to find out if the St. George’s clubhouse is truly haunted.
The eerie writing is on the wall, but you may not be able to see it. A gathering of downright weird and scary characters will assemble at St. George’s
on Friday, October 28th for our annual family and children’s Halloween Party.
We’ll enjoy a ghostly Halloween themed buffet dinner at 6 pm and there
will also be spooky magic in the air as a mysterious magician appears on
stage at 7 pm to delight young and old with a few tricks and treats.
The creaky doors to our ghastly Haunted House will open shortly after
the magic show, but will you and your family make it past the first room?
The question remains – Are you afraid of the dark or just afraid of what’s
in the dark? – Come and experience the chill and the thrill for yourselves!
