Lesson 27: Family Health – Teacher Notes Slide 1: Introduction Slide 2: Define marriage. Marriage is a lifelong union between two people who develop an intimate relationship. Can you name some celebrity couples that are positive examples of a healthy marriage? Slide 3: Define and discuss emotional intimacy. State of being emotionally connected to another person. Slide 4: Define and discuss emotional maturity. The ability to assess a relationship and to act according to what is best for everyone involved. Slide 5: Define and discuss divorce. Discuss that it is a legal ending to a marriage. Who does divorce affect? How does divorce affect the children? Slide 6: What are some reasons couples get divorced? Abuse, addiction, unfaithfulness, emotional immaturity, conflicts with the family, selfishness, lack of communication, unfulfilled expectations, and financial trouble. Slide 7: What is a custodial parent? The parent with whom the child resides full time. What is noncustodial parent? The parent who does not have primary care or custody of the child. The noncustodial parent pays child support to the custodial parent. What is joint custody? Custody of a child is awarded to both parents. Slide 8‐9: What type of responsibilities might a couple face when starting a family? Responsibilities before birth, emotional maturity, safety, financial, discipline. Slides 10‐11: Discuss how children pick up actions and behaviors that they learn from their parents. What are some things a parent can do to help build a healthy self‐esteem in their children? Give children time and attention, establish clear rules and limits, take time to listen and communicate, and praise positive behavior and good choices. How does it feel when your parents say they are proud of you? Slide 12: Discuss and define the seven types of families. Mention all families are different and unique. Talk about family dynamics. Slide 13: Discuss and define a nuclear family. A nuclear family consists of mom, dad and kids. A non‐ traditional family consists of moms, dads, and kids just like a nuclear family. Non‐traditional families can consist of two moms and kids or two dads and kids or can be a blended family or adoptive family. Slide 15: Discuss and define blended family. A blended family consists of a biological parent, stepparent, and stepchildren. Example: Brady Bunch sitcom Slide 16: Define and discuss a single parent family. Children live with only one parent. Example: Gilmore Girls sitcom Slide 17: What is an extended family? Relatives outside the nuclear family. Examples: grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Slide 18: What are adoptive families? Parents are legal guardians over children who are not biologically theirs. Examples: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Sandra Bullock and new baby, Louis. Slide 19: Define and discuss what a foster family is. Children live with a family temporarily until they are adopted or returned to their biological parents. Example: The movie “The Blind Side.” The Tuey Family took in Michael Oher when he was homeless. They later adopted him making him part of their family. Slide 20: What are some things that can cause problems for a family and what are some ways to deal with these problems? Financial problems, trouble controlling anger, depression, grief, abuse of any form, delinquent behavior.
