President’s Message
by FBLA National President Niel Patel
Happy New Year!
In the 2016–17 membership year, FBLA-PBL is celebrating our 75th anniversary as the
premier business organization. We continue to recruit new members, the exclusive Diamond
Chapter recognition program was introduced, and our first American Enterprise Day essay
contest winner Jonathan Scotto was announced. FBLA continues to prosper. Now it is time for
you, as individual members, to come into the spotlight and demonstrate what it means to be
a Future Business Leader of America.
Battle Royale is a new initiative fostered by the FBLA national officer team to encourage
state pride. After being registered by the state adviser, states earn points for FBLA activities
that their members complete. This includes participation in national programs as well as
membership recruitment. For more information on national programs, visit go.fbla.org/
resources.
After months of preparation, conference season has finally arrived. This is the chance to excel
in your competitive events, network with peers and business professionals, and learn from
workshops hosted by fellow members and officers. Your national officers look forward to
seeing you at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California!
I applaud you for your dedication to our organization. With your impeccable work ethic I’m
sure you will continue your efforts and leave A Legacy of Leadership!
Do you:
• love FBLA?
• enjoy public speaking?
• possess leadership skills?
• have at least one year left before you graduate?
• want to meet members across the country?
Consider running for FBLA national office!
Visit go.fbla.org/NLC to review candidate and campaign guidelines. Talk to your local and state
advisers about the application and approval process to become a national officer candidate.
Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on May 15. Will you leave A Legacy of Leadership?

SLC Prep with Pep!
by Gillian Mathews, National Secretary’s Council Executive Assistant
The State Leadership Conference (SLC) is an exciting opportunity for FBLA members to
participate in competitive events and compete against some of the best members in the
state. These events are divided into three categories: individual, team, and chapter.
Many SLCs also include state officer elections and a series of informative leadership
workshops for FBLA members and advisers. The SLC is an amazing way to interact with
members from around your state, learn new things, and make new friends. Below are
some tips on how to prepare for SLC.
CONFERENCE
• Highlight of the Conference: When you receive your SLC program, be sure to highlight or circle your
competition times, as well as any workshops that you are interested in attending.
• Dress for Success: Remember to follow the FBLA dress code at all times during a conference. You
don’t want to risk missing out on an event because of a violation. Find out more at go.fbla.org/
dresscode.
• Have Fun: SLC isn’t just for competing, it’s about having fun and making memories too! Remember to
enjoy your time there and take advantage of all the amazing opportunities FBLA offers.
NETWORKING
• Social Events: Many State Leadership Conferences may hold social events for members to network
and interact. If your state has a dance or workshops, make sure to attend! These are a great way to
meet new members and make memories.
• Give a Compliment: One way to spark a conversation is to compliment someone. Whether you like a
phone case or the design on a shirt—everyone loves to get feedback and find similar interests.
• Contact and Connect: Nowadays, technology is the main source of communication. If you meet
someone you have common interests with at a conference, be sure to exchange contact information
to keep in touch!
COMPETITION
• Resources: When studying for a test or practicing for a presentation, it is always best to use resources.
These may include using the FBLA Competitive Events Online Reference Guide or watching a
YouTube video about public speaking tips. Either way, they can help you to prepare for SLC!
• Study Comfortably: In order to get the most out of your session, make it fun! Try grabbing some
friends to quiz you, listening to music, or using interactive learning software like Quizlet.
• Connect: One way to really get the most information about your competition is to contact FBLA
members or alumni who have participated in that competition. If you know anyone from your
chapter or state who can help and give tips, reach out to them to get a new perspective.
With effort, studying, and practice, you may earn a spot to represent your state at the
National Leadership Conference this summer in Anaheim!

5 • Tomorrow’s Business Leader
To celebrate our 75th anniversary, FBLA‑PBL
rang the Closing Bell at the New York Stock
Exchange on January 13, 2017.
FBLA-PBL President & CEO Jean Buckley, New York FBLA State President Sophia Danziger, and
members and advisers from New York FBLA participated in the bell ceremony in New York City.
“Ringing the closing bell is a historic tradition, and I am still in disbelief that our organization was
given this opportunity,” said Danziger. “Not everyday do young business leaders get the chance to
stand on a platform that is usually filled with CEOs from very successful companies.”

The School of

Stevens Institute
of Technology
When Stevens students are on internships,
they don’t make coffee and copies—they
make a difference. Just ask Genevieve Finn,
who worked in the technology department
at JPMorgan Chase over the summer.
Genevieve was put in charge of remodeling
JPMC’s headcount and approvals systems,
and reported her progress directly to senior
management. “I was very comfortable
talking to managers and department heads
as though they were my peers—without
my Stevens experience, that would have
been very difficult,” Genevieve says. Her
Stevens experience has also nurtured her
entrepreneurial spark, as Genevieve is
founder of Genevieve’s Crutches, which
decorates donated crutches and delivers
them to wounded veterans at Walter Reed.

you can explore your passion at Stevens.

Delaware Valley High School FBLA collected toiletry items durin
of December. Members collected a variety of items including
toothbrushes, shampoo, body wash, mouthwash, and soap in all

Live Oak High School FBLA held a huge
Thanksgiving canned food drive to make
a happier Thanksgiving for 125 needy
families in the Morgan Hill Unified School
District. The names of the families were
obtained from each of the 10 schools.
It began Veterans Day weekend when
members stood outside of two grocery
stores and asked for cans or monetary
donations. Over $3,500 was collected
to buy household necessities and some
staples. About two tons of cans were
collected by the teachers whose classes
brought in the most donations, and
they received gift certificates to local
restaurants.
Lions Club members each drove two
students to deliver to all 125 of the families
the day before Thanksgiving. Each family
received a large apple box (weighing
about 70 pounds), a large grocery bag full
of groceries,
laundry
detergent,
French bread,
and a turkey.

Bonanza FBLA wanted to teach you
ng adults about the importance of
March of Dimes and why prematur
birth is something that needs to be
e
prevented. It began with an Aware
ness Week in which the entire school
K-12, participated. With participation
,
from both elementary and high sch
ool, the students made the
environment positive and created exc
itement for future activities. Bonanz
a FBLA held baby-related games for
students with a message that the kid
s understood and appreciated. A Ma

junior high and high school studen
