Chapter One
Ilona looked out the window, her mind wandering until finally her attention was
drawn back to the soft murmurs of the students. Her light teal eyes drifted across the
classroom before they fastened upon the two huddled figures.
She swallowed...
Melanie’s head was bowed next to Tidus’s and Ilona watched as she brushed her
shoulder against his, how she leaned into him slightly while they worked on the English
project together. A small smile drifted across Ilona’s lips as she gazed at them.
This was so normal…
As if fate were toying with her, images suddenly went off inside her head, screams of
the dying echoing in her ears. She snapped her eyes closed, her hands curling into fists as
her breathing grew ragged and she turned towards the window. The sunlight drifted across
her face and she opened her eyes, concentrating on how the wind rustled through the
branches of the giant oak before her.
Apologies...
The voice drifted through her head like water and she shook it.
No, it wasn’t your fault…
Ilona replied and she scanned the classroom once more, wishing desperately that he
was here but quickly hid it before he could sense it. She glanced down at her arm, her eyes
sliding to her wrist to fasten on the two puncture wounds. Her fingers ghosted over them
and she shivered, the memories coming back to her in vivid colors and sensations.

His fangs sinking into her arm...
The pain…
The pleasure...
She flushed and shook her head, reminding herself not to think like that. Zane had
only done it to save her life, nothing more and the bond they shared now was only
temporary. He’d said that it would fade in time without any further exploration and she’d
been confused by it but he hadn’t given her anymore information and if she had to be
honest with herself...
She didn’t know if she wanted to know what he’d meant...
Dominus? Zane’s questioning voice echoed inside her head and she snapped to
attention.
Oh sorry, my mind was wandering, Ilona replied, desperately hoping that he hadn’t
felt her conflicting emotions.
I noticed, his voice held a tinge of something in it that Ilona hadn’t recognized
before.
He was making fun of her...
She smiled, feeling suddenly giddy and grinned; though she knew he couldn’t see it.
So what did you want? Her question went unanswered for a moment and she
suddenly felt a heavy sadness. It was coming from Zane. She closed her eyes and drew in
a breath, for the same crushing weight seemed to sit atop her own shoulders.

I know…she whispered and there was a long silence and the utter hopelessness that
ripped through Zane took the air from her lungs. Her eyes stung with tears and she wiped
them away before anyone could see.
I’m sorry, I’ll control my emotions so not to affect you, Dominus, Zane whispered
and Ilona shook her head.
No, I like knowing what you’re feeling because, she paused, chewing her bottom lip
before continuing, because it lets me know I’m not alone.
Silence...
Then a sudden warmth spread throughout her body and she smiled and suddenly
wished that he was here, beside her and she looked through the window and down towards
the sidewalk where a figure covered in black stood.
Silver met light teal...
You’re never alone, Zane whispered to her as he looked up at her and she felt her
heart quicken at his penetrating gaze, not when I’m with you.
