Cell Reproduction-"omnis cellula e cellula" (Rudolf Virchow)
Why do cells divide?
Cell division is not simply a cell pinching in half. It is a complex
process that faithfully passes the genome from one generation
to the next.
But if we did think of it simply, it would consist of 3 basic
concepts:
1. Copy DNA
2. Move DNA to opposite ends
3. Separate the cell
Terms
chromatin
chromosome
centromere
homologous chromosomes
sister chromatids
somatic cells
gametes
Prokaryotic Cells do not do Mitosis, but rather a simple
process called Binary Fission
The Cell Cycle
Use onion root tips, or whitefish blastula to determine the
relative amount of time spent in each phase of the mitosis.
In your lab notebook, do research in order to make a claim as to
what you think the order will be from longest to shortest. This will
serve as your informal hypothesis.
