6-4.1 Compare the major contributions of the African kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai,
including the impact of Islam on the cultures of these kingdoms.
6-4.2 Describe the influence of geography on trade in the African kingdoms, including the salt and
gold trades.
Literacy Skills for SS: Interpret Earth’s physical and human systems by using maps, mental maps,
geographic models, and other social studies resources.
Plan for the day:
1. First Five: Distribution of the map of Africa. Students will take out their pencils and crayons
or colored pencils for the activity.
2. Using the Geography of Africa power point, the teacher will discuss the climate zones of
Africa. Students will label their maps with the Mediterranean Sea, the Niger River, and the
climate zones – the Sahara, the Sahel, the savanna, and the rain forest. Students will then use
the handout to color the labeled items appropriately (blue, yellow, brown, light green, and
dark green).
3. Students are to label the Akan and Bambuk-Bure gold mines on the map at the bottom of the
map activity page.
4. The teacher will distribute Chapter 13, Early African Civilizations guided notes. Using the
power point on Early African Civilizations, the teacher will lead the discussion on the climate
zones of Africa, the Ghana civilization, and the Mali civilization. As the discussion is
completed, students will complete their guided notes.
Homework: Review vocabulary on Chapter 13, Early African Civilizations  Test on January 25th.

6-4.2 Describe the influence of geography on trade in the African kingdoms, including the salt and
gold trades.
Plan for the Day:
1. First Five: List the climate zones in Africa.
2. The teacher will continue using the power point on Early African Civilizations to finish the
discussion on the climate zones of Africa, the Ghana civilization, and the Mali civilization that
was started on Tuesday. As the discussion is completed, the students will complete their
guided notes.
3. Time permitting, upon completion of # 2, the teacher will lead the discussion on the Songhai
Empire and the relationship between Trade and Islam. As the discussion is completed, the
students will complete their guided notes.
4. Students are to read silently when they finish their work.

be given on January 25th.

Plan for the Day:
1. First Five: None
2. Upon distribution of the SS Weekly # 8: African Kingdoms, and the quiz for the weekly,
students will select the correct response for each item. They are to locate their proof, write
down the name of the article, the page of the article, and the paragraph in the article that
provides proof for their response. The proof in the article should be highlighted or
underlined. Upon completion of the weekly, students should turn in their quiz and their
newspaper.
3. Following the SS Weekly, students may read their AR book.
Homework: Review vocabulary, climate zones, and guided notes on Africa, Chapter 13. Unit test will
be given on January 25th.

Plan for the Day:
1. First Five: How did Islam reach Africa?
2. Upon distribution of the African Empires Activity handout by the teacher, students will use
their notes and the textbook to complete a chart on the West African Kingdoms. Students
must identify the time period, the ecological zone/geography, trade products, trade centers,
important leaders, and major contributions of each of the kingdoms – Ghana, Mali, and
Songhai.
3. Upon completion of # 2, students will complete the vocabulary review on the handout.
4. Responses will be checked for both # 2 and # 3 using the smartboard at the conclusion of the
activities.
5. Students may read their AR book when they finish # 1 – 4.
