A note about food
You may have noticed that we
are passionate about food! Our
mission statement—To nourish with
excellent food, coffee & drinks,
served with connection, dedicated
to community—has at its heart the
celebration of food.
First, we believe that food
should be delicious! We make almost everything here, from scratch,
every day. We are constantly
seeking to make our food better.
Second, we believe that food
should be nourishing. That means
no weird ingredients, like soy oil
or corn syrup. It also means that
we strive to meet the needs of
people who are eating in ways that
especially nourish their bodies—like
Gluten Free, Vegan or Paleo.
And, last but not least,
we believe that how we eat can be
revolutionary. Our food choices
reflect our values and our commitments—to community, sustainability
and health.
May your visit to Summer Thyme’s
nourish you in all these ways.
Thanks for coming in.
Ethical eating and
the true cost of food
Local. A
Organic.
GMO-free.
Ethically sourced.
Compostable.
House made.
Living Wage.
Community.
s a Summer Thyme’s customer, you may
know that these words all point to a set of
values we have as a business. We believe in
offering food that is grown with care, free of
possibly dangerous chemicals. We believe
that the people working in the food business
deserve a living wage and the dignity of fair
treatment. We want to reduce our impact
on the local landfill, so we use compostable
plastics and compost all our food waste.
We make almost everything we serve in
house, so we can take care in producing the
healthiest, best tasting food possible.
What does all this cost? Well, first of all,
it definitely costs more than the practices
that large food chains use – meat from
huge feedlots, Styrofoam containers that
have serious detrimental impacts to the
environment (both in production and in waste)
and produce grown with attention to profit, not
quality. These are all cheap ways to produce
food, but they come with hidden costs – to
our health, to the planet we owe our lives
to, and to the people and animals that are
enmeshed in the food production industry.
When we eat cheap, we pay in other ways –
some seen, some invisible.
We also believe that every business in a
community should help to support their
community. We buy from local farms and
businesses whenever possible, keeping our
dollars and our support in the area. And as a
local business, we strive to give back to nonprofits and schools – through food donations,
our non-profit programs and with gifts. A
significant percentage of our business is
designated for these purposes.
So, when you pay for your food at Summer
Thyme’s, you are paying for a lot! You are
contributing to good farming practices, living
wages for those working in the food industries,
and increased health and vitality for our
community. Our prices reflect all our values –
and we hope they reflect yours, too. As always,
we want to hear your feedback as we continue
to work to provide the best possible eating
place possible.

The Laura Wilcox Endowment Fund at FCNL supports an intern endowment in
Laura Wilcox’s name. This endowment will fund an eleven-month internship

intern at FCNL, but her tragic death in a rampage shooting in Nevada County
in 2001 prevented her from fulfilling her dream to create a better world.

On a trip to Berkeley last summer, we visited a café that had
an interesting non-profit support
program—they profiled local
non-profits on a wall and gave
customers tokens to deposit in
boxes for each of the non-profits.

SUNDAY
We (Amy & Chamba, owners of
Summer Thyme’s) are former
teachers and we have also been
involved with numerous non-profits. We know how hard they
work!
We were eager to put this idea
into practice in the new store.
Above the customer station, you
will see three local non-profit organizations—Animal Save, The
Friendship Clup, and The Woolman Semester. For every $5 you
spend at Summer Thyme’s, you
will receive a wooden nickel. Put
your nickels in the boxes under
the posters, and we will donate
to that organization based on the
number of wooden nickels.

SATURDAY
At Summer Thyme’s, we have always worked hard to support our
local schools and non-profits.
When Summer Thyme’s moved to its new
location, we envisioned more room for food
preparation, a beautiful dining space, more
convenient parking and expanded offerings.
All of that has come true. And, those
wonderful improvements have brought with
them some challenges. We did not foresee
that the line in front of the registers would
prove to be frustrating for both customers
dining in and for customers grabbing a
sandwich and leaving. And, we are now much
more of a “destination” for special meals –
Mother’s Day saw our dining room packed with
a line out the door.

Our Rooftop
Garden!
Our recent Credibles campaign allowed us to create a
Rooftop Garden for edible herbs, flowers and garnish.
We love running upstairs to clip fresh herbs to use in
our seasonal specials!
