Hawaiian Endemics
The Hawaiian island chain is one of the most remote locations on our
planet. You can imagine it's difficult for any animal or plant to travel to
our islands and settle. The ones that do make it tend to adjust to the
eco-system making them unique Hawaiian endemics.
This month we feature the Saddle Wrasse
(Thalassoma duperrey). This colorful fast swimming fish is quite
common in shallow waters around the islands and can be easily
spotted. As a juvenile, this fish has horizontal black and white stripes.
As it matures, it will develop one distinct orange "saddle" on its body.
Using its pectoral fins for swimming, this agile reef hunter looks for
small crustaceans to eat in seaweed and under rocks.
...10 cool facts about this creature.
May Giveaway - Guess What Animal
This small crustacean lives in Anchialine ponds primarily on the Big
Island. It grows to about 0.5 inches and can live up to 20 years in
captivity. This cute red critter is so good at adjusting to different
environmental conditions that it's ideal as a pet.
