2016—17 | Issue 3 Honest Compassionate Self-Controlled Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Carers, We’ve had such a busy few weeks at the academy… February half term seems like a distant memory and we’ll soon be preparing for the Easter Break! Thank you to everyone who contributed to our fundraising for the British Heart Foundation on Health and Fitness Day– the children raised over £1000 for this amazing charity – we were so overwhelmed by your support! World Book Day was a massive success too – the children had an incredibly exciting day and took part in lots of great activities – these are the kinds of days that children remember forever. Thank you to the staff for organising and thank you to our Parents/Carers for supporting these days so enthusiastically. Next week will be assessment week for Year 1 children. Please don’t worry – all of the assessments are undertaken in small groups or on a one to one basis – and this just provides the teachers with an opportunity to find out where the children are and how best to support them with future learning. A final polite reminder – please could you all make sure that uniform is clearly labelled- we have had an increasing number of items disappearing and it’s very difficult for class teachers to keep track of uniform which isn’t labelled. We will soon be placing a large lost property bin in the entrance hall so that any items which have been found without their owner can be stored safely until they are collected. Cars must not be parked on double yellow lines, the paved area outside the front of the library/main reception, or over any local residents’ driveways. There are a number of roads around the school which you can park on and we now have 7 spaces available at the front left of the building. This term our key text is 'Bedtime for Monsters'. After some delay our fish are now safely enjoying our book corner. We love reading to them, sketching them, making backgrounds/settings for their tank and feeding them (if we are the star of the day). In maths we will be focusing on adding, subtraction, partitioning and writing numbers to 20; finding lengths in cm and m and number bonds. In topic we will be looking at new sketching skills (art), making sea music (music), learning about the five oceans on earth and what lives in them (geography/science) and storing and retrieving digital images (ICT). We are also enjoying testing Miss McCulloch’s Sea Life knowledge with incredible questions such as ‘Why does a squid have eight legs?’ and ‘Why is a sea horse called a sea horse?’ written in our question area. There has been a change in homework style for year one this term. Children will have had letters and new homework menus. This change is to ensure children have more time to read at home and practise their spellings, vital for their progress. There are a lot of spellings, please aim to practise 5 or so a week that your child finds hard, don’t do them all at once! Reading every night will also improve your child’s spelling and help them put words into context. If you would like any hints and tips on reading/spelling strategies or help navigating this homework please pop in at any time after school or make an appointment to see Miss McCulloch. This term our focus book is Snail and the Whale, a firm Mr P favourite. Through our work on –ed,-ing,-er and –est suffixes and –un prefixes we will be learning how to spell new words and applying these to stories, speech bubbles, diaries and post cards. Well done curious caterpillars on your fantastic hard work and progress so far in year one – you are all super stars!
