October 2016 • Volume 23/Number 34
Continuing the Little League® tradition of making it “safer for the kids.”
The ASAP program is all about safety awareness, injury prevention, and making the game fun and safe for Little Leaguers®
and league volunteers. No league embodied the spirit of ASAP as much as Horseheads Little League, our national safety
award winner. Its commitment to getting everyone involved, emphasizing awareness, and looking for ways to make the
game safer makes us proud to award them with a Musco Light-Structure Green™ lighting system.
Horseheads (N.Y.) Little League
President Tony Bellamy, and Safety
Officer Linda Miller, talked about the
kind of impact the award will have on
the league going forward.
Along with conducting 100 percent of
the required background checks before
opening day, the league also has
several other safety initiatives that
made it stand out.
“Our league has been very good
about empowering the safety
program,” said Mrs. Miller. “I think
this recognition drives home that
what we’re doing is for the safety of
the children and adults. I think that
anybody we had to convince is now
convinced.”
“It’s like a groundswell effect that if
you start at the bottom with the kids
to make them understand, the parents
will follow. I think getting the kids
involved from opening day with the
safety message, with the flashcards,
with the anthem, and with the
program Linda puts together, helps
everybody understand that safety is
everybody’s concern,” said Mr.
Bellamy.
Mrs. Miller expanded on the program.
“We do a think, see, say and do, little
routine. So think, see, say and do,
play it safer me and you. So then
the children start to recognize that.
That they need to look out at what’s

happening and be aware because
that’s what ASAP is all about,” Mrs.
Miller said. “The first year that I did
it, they were hesitant. ‘You want me
to do what?’ Now, the older players
that are returning, they’re showing me
what the routine is. So that’s really
nice that they’re catching on to the
point that they know what it is.”
warm-up players in the outfield. To
do this, our league requires those
players wear a helmet, becuase
accidents happen as do unforeseen
consequences,” said Mr. Bellamy.
Mr. Bellamy and Mrs. Miller said
Horseheads Little League is
committed to utilizing protective
equipment to minimize injury, even
during non-game situations.
“I think that we’ll look into protective
inside guards - a type of mask (for
pitchers). There is always the
potential for pitchers to be injured by
a batted ball,” said Mr. Bellamy.
“In the middle of, and between,
innings, players on the bench will go
“We’ll do all we can to protect them.”
The ASAP national winners also had a
few words of advice for leagues eager
to earn the top honor.
“It’s awesome ... we’re so humbled,”
said Mrs. Miller. “I think the ASAP
outline and the requirements are very
good. We built our program around
addressing each of the steps. So, I
think all local leagues need to take a
good look at ASAP, and keep in mind
this question: ‘What if it was my child
out there?’ And that’s how we
approached it. My son’s out there,
what equipment will I think is
satisfactory?”
But that’s not everything that the
league is doing to be on the forefront
of safety awareness.

A minimum of three practices are required
before the first game is played.
– ATYAA, Michigan
Bethesda Little League highly recommends
that all players be given pre-participation
physical exams by their family physician
prior to participating in any activity.
– Bethesda LL, Maryland
Coaches should greet the players as they
arrive and make sure they are feeling all
right.
– North Rialto, California
If a manager knowingly disregards safety, he
or she will come before the CFLL Board of
Directors to explain his or her conduct.
– Cactus Foothills North LL, Arizona
One of the best purchases has been Heart
Protectors. Twenty-five were purchased and
are being distributed evenly among all fields.
We have offered the parents the opportunity
to purchase their own at league cost.
– Eastlake National LL, Ohio
The coach must treat every player as
a valuable, worthwhile individual that
has potential to grow in stature and
understanding.
– Grandville LL, Michigan

TIPS FROM LITTLE LEAGUE®
All Board of Directors, managers, coaches and any other persons, volunteers, or hired workers, who provide regular service to the league
and/or have repetitive access to, or contact with, players or teams must annually complete/submit a Little League Volunteer Application.
The league must also conduct a background check on all personnel listed above in accordance with Regulations I (c) 8 and 9.
