Head’s Message
Religious Theme: Mission / God’s Peace
Last Saturday I attended the unveiling of a new Roll of Honour which has been set
on the wall in Monument Lane. The Roll records the names of past Edmundians who have fallen in different military conflicts. One of the guests was a lady names Agnes Schipper whose uncle, Andreas Frolich, had attended the College in the
summer term of 1939. She told the story of how her uncle was arrested in Holland and led away to the Mauthausen concentration camp. She was a little girl at the time and this was the last she saw of him. She and her siblings wanted to visit St
Edmund's to experience the surroundings of the last place Andreas saw before he died. Needless to say she was very tearful
indeed but overwhelmed by the 'feeling' she had in and around the rural environment of our school. She was so pleased to
know that her uncle’s last weeks had been full of so much peace and joy.
With all best wishes for your weekend together,
Our Campion Charity Barrow Farm (Riding for the Disabled)
Yours sincerely,
Steven Cartwright

PERFORMING ARTS College String Masterclass Last Sunday, Caspian Plummer (6B) and
Matthew Parker (5C) were invited to take part in
the College’s String Workshop and Masterclass for
players of Grade 2 and above under the direction
of Mr Simon Smith, College & Prep violin teacher.
The boys worked with the string orchestra:
Caspian leading the second violins and Matthew confidently leading the cellos on his
own. They worked on a number of pieces,
performing two in a concert, including a most
curious piece called Things that Go Bump in
the Night. As part of the Masterclass, Caspian
bravely stood up to play in front of the large
audience of parents and had a ‘public lesson’ from Mr
Smith. Inter House Performing Arts Week Our annual
Performing Arts Week opened with the Drama event on
Monday afternoon. Around twenty children from Forms 3
to 6 performed a range of solos and duos from plays, and
there were also poems and mimes. An extract from ‘The
Wind in the Willows’ proved to be the most popular choice.
Miss James praised everyone for their confidence in getting
up on stage, while providing some useful tips
for future performances. The winning entry of
the afternoon was by the duo of Ellis Linney
and Eva van de Ven. The following children
were also awarded Distinctions: Eva Drew,
Ethan Martin, Nikita Mistry, Natasha Polling.
Jack Roberts, Emily Thomas, Claudia Williams and
Lilymai Woolfe. Campion’s larger number of entries contributed to their coming in first place, closely followed by
Mayne and then Southworth. The performers at Thursday afternoon’s Dance event communicated a real sense
of enjoyment to their large and rambunctious audience.
Among the range of styles represented were
‘gangnam style’ dances from two groups of Form
6 boys. Mrs McMeechan, the adjudicator, and
Miss Christina, assisting, commented that the
standard was the best they had seen at the Prep.
The highest mark of the afternoon was awarded
to ‘The Retro Reds’, comprising air hostesses Eva
Drew, Evie Gostling and Claudia Williams. Other
children achieving Distinctions were Irish dancer
Alicia Chugh, modern dancer Niamh Beagon and the trio of Katie Conlon, Scarlett
Mitchell and Annabel Pattinson. Campion
narrowly beat
Mayne to first
place with
Southworth
coming in third.
Well
Sport On Tuesday 15th
October, the U11 Football
A team travelled to Howe
Green to play in the Wix
District Cup. They won all
five games, scoring 11
goals and conceding only
1. This crowned them Wix
District Champions 2013.
They will now play in the Hertfordshire County Finals against all of the other district winners in
March 2014.
Form 2 have had a very
busy week preparing for
our medieval banquet,
which took place on
Wednesday afternoon. We
were taught a medievalstyle dance, which we
demonstrated to Brave Sir
Cartwright, who wore his
best crown to attend! We
then sat down to a feast of
healthy food made by the
children. This included
sandwiches, fruit, vegetable salads and even a fruit
smoothie. Both food and
company were enjoyed by all and Mr Hull even
joined us for a well earned break and a sandwich.
Our banquet was a lovely way to bring together our
learning about castles and healthy eating. Form 2
also had a visit from two
horses and their riders,
who told us about how a
Knight's Page would have
looked after their horses in
a castle during the medieval time.
Conker Conversation The children in Form Three
upwards are allowed to play conkers at break
times. Please stock up on vinegar and use the following link for hardening tips and rules of the
game.http://resources.woodlandsjunior.kent.sch.uk/customs/conkers.html. Please
Note that 'Stampsees' are not permitted.
