Definition of NJHS Service Hours: Time spent performing a service to others without compensation Giving of your time to help other people at our school and in our community 40 total hours are due by the end of April, 2016 (exact date will be announced in the spring) – each member must complete 20 school hours and 20 community hours School Service: 20 hours total Examples that count the FULL TIME: Staying after school to help at a football game (helping move the chains or doing another job, not just an audience member!) Staying in the evening to help with selling concessions at the play Coming to a parent night to welcome and guide parents (like conferences) Taking work home to help a teacher or giving up your lunch time to help a teacher Examples that count HALF TIME: Anything you do before or after school that is primarily for another EMS club Staying after school to clean up the cafeteria after a WEB event Coming early to school to help raise money for a fundraising event Coming before school to work in the garden because you are a member of EcoTeens Working after school on the Concrete Couch project because you are in Art Club Community Service: 20 hours total Examples that count the FULL TIME: Working at a food bank Working at a homeless or animal shelter Helping collect items at the holidays Mowing the yard or shoveling snow for an elderly neighbor (with no compensation!) Babysitting for no compensation! Service Opportunities that DO NOT COUNT: WEB training day Work done as a TA – this is a class and you earn a grade Work done during Eagle Time – again, this is a class Committee work done in Teen Leadership – this is an expectation of all NJHS members
