Summer of Hope – Kick Out Poverty 2014
A word from your local Member of Parliament
Norman Baker MP (Lewes)
“I am very happy to support the principle of your ‘Summer of Hope’ and in particular your establishment of a youth
advisory board.”
Gregory Barker MP (Bexhill & Battle)
“I am pleased support the Quicken Trust’s ‘Summer of Hope’. I hope that many local school communities will get
involved in this project which aims to eradicate poverty for children living in Kabubbu, Uganda. It is a
wonderful opportunity for our local young people to learn about the very different lives of children in this Ugandan
village and help them towards a better future.”
Charles Hendry MP (Wealden)
“I would be delighted to add my support to the excellent and extraordinary work the Quicken Trust does in
providing educational facilities support to the children of Kabubbu in Uganda and I hope that schools across
Wealden will become involved in this important initiative.”
Stephen Lloyd MP (Eastbourne & Willingdon)
"I have known of and supported the work of Quicken Trust, an excellent local based charity, for many years and fully
endorse their 'Summer of Hope' campaign. I encourage all schools in Eastbourne and Willingdon to be fully involved
as they guarantee 100% of what you raise will be used to help eradicate the poverty of the orphans and community
in Kabubbu, Uganda."
Anna Reid, former Head Teacher at Willingdon Primary School and currently retired is the
Consultant to Quicken Trust for this initiative

Summer of Hope – Kick Out Poverty 2014
A word from the Vice-President of the Republic of Uganda
speaking about Kabubbu in 2010
Help us to help the children of Kabubbu
1. Help us provide a daily meal of posho (maize flour mixed with water) and
beans – fills the tummy and helps children concentrate at school
2. Help us provide a simple gutter and water tank to collect rain water from
their roofs so they don’t have to walk long distances to a pump and
carry heavy water containers home

The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be the 20th FIFA World Cup, an international men's
football tournament, that is scheduled to take place in Brazil from 12 June to 13
July 2014. It will be the second time that Brazil has hosted the competition, the
previous being in 1950. Brazil was elected unchallenged as host nation in 2007
after the international football federation, FIFA, decreed that the tournament
would be staged in South America for the first time since 1978 in Argentina, and
the fifth time overall.
The national teams of 31 countries advanced through qualification competitions
that began in June 2011 to participate with the host nation Brazil in the final
tournament. A total of 64 matches are to be played in twelve cities across Brazil in
either new or redeveloped stadiums, with the tournament beginning with a group
stage. For the first time at a World Cup Finals, the matches will use goal-line
technology.
With the host country, all world champion teams since the first World Cup in 1930
(Uruguay, Italy, Germany, England, Argentina, France and Spain) have qualified for
this competition. Spain is the defending champion, having defeated the
Netherlands 1–0 in the 2010 World Cup final to win its first World title. The
previous four World Cups staged in South America were all won by South
American teams

Block graph of results
[for all the teams or just one group]
• Create a large block graph; use graph paper with
large squares if possible - perhaps 2 cms squares
or bigger if possible.
• Along the bottom axis [x is horizontal] write the
name of each team inside one square, or cut out
the names on slide 15 and stick them on.
• Up the side, [the y axis, remember, y points to the
sky] write the number of goals, 1, 2, 3, 4 and so
on, one number per square
• As you find out results colour in the blocks and
use the colours of the country’s flag.

Flags
Look at similarities in flags, for
example, Italy, Mexico and Iran;
Colombia, Ecuador and Spain;
France and Netherlands;
Belgium and Germany.
Try to find out why certain colours are
used and what they represent.
How many different ways… there are 4 colours in
the Brazilian flag, how many different ways can you find to rearrange the
same colours. Eg blue background, green diamond, white ball, yellow stars
Goal line technology
I am sure that somebody in the room
will know about goal line technology!
If I’m wrong then ask your teacher, or
perhaps an older brother or sister, or
parent.
What are the advantages of goal line
technology?
Are there any disadvantages?
Discuss!
Time zones
• Brasília official time This is the time zone of ten
of the twelve venues; the other two, Cuiabá and
Manaus, are in the Amazon time zone which is
one hour ahead of Brasilia official Time.
• Time zones; what are the problems created by
matches played in different time zones?
• What is the difference between British Time BST
and Brasilia Official Time BOT? Will that make it
difficult for British people viewing matches live, in
England?
What happens if there is a tie!
• A bit difficult, but those who really love football might
like to know the following in the event of a tie!
• The ranking of each team in each group will be
determined as follows:
Greater number of points in all group matches
Goal difference in all group matches
Greater number of goals scored in all group matches
Greatest number of points in matches between tied teams
Goal difference in matches between tied teams
Greatest number of goals scored in matches between tied
teams

Group A and B matches
Now that you know all the matches to be played by group
A and group B:
• Look at the match numbers and list them in order.
Leave gaps on your table for the other matches so that
you can complete your list when you discover the
information.
• You know at what time the match will be played in
Brazil and you have already discovered how much time
difference there is between BST and BOT. What time
will it be in England when the matches are played?
• Add this information to your table or list.

Just a reminder
• Are your group tables neat and tidy so that you can see
what happens when and where?
• Is your list of matches complete up to group E?
• Are they all in order, so that you can see what happens
when? Take care because some matches are played on
the same day in different arenas.
• Have you designed one flag for each of the groups so
that there is a group A flag and a group B flag and so
on?
• Have you worked out at what time the matches will be
on in England if they will be watched live?
• Have you decided which team is the most likely winner
in each group and the least likely winner?
