Many of our Year 12 students have been visiting the school over the last week to meet with their teachers and to receive final advice and last minute tips. We have all been impressed by the preparation of this year’s senior class and are confident that they will do their best over this examination period. We offer them our full support and we look forward to celebrating their results with them on Monday 12 December 2016. Grandparents’ Day On Tuesday 25 October, we welcomed approximately 540 grandparents and family friends of boys from all levels of our school. They enjoyed morning tea together in the Performing Arts Centre, attended a concert involving musicians from all sections of the school, and were given a tour by their grandsons. Thanks to all the staff, students and parents who worked so hard to make the day a great success, in particular Miss Jessie Stasiak, Mr Ken Schwab and the Development Office Staff, and to the members of the CGS Auxiliary for their assistance. I know that the students who had the opportunity to show their grandparents around the school were very proud to do so, and I hope that the grandparents enjoyed their day too. Twilight Concerto Concert Summer Uniform A very appreciative audience were delighted by a beautiful concert of string chamber music at The Twilight Concerto Concert last Wednesday in the Music School. Organised by the Head of Strings, Mr Robert Wakely, staff and students performed a wide ranging repertoire, featuring some of our Year 12 students for the last time. Thank you to all the Music Staff for the wonderful work that they do with our students and thanks too to the Year 12 students who have contributed so much to the music program in their time at the school. In addition, the following students were ranked among the best in the State: Nicholas Browne, James Gunasegaram, Rory Lewis and Niko Verrios. Australian Geography Competition Earlier this year, Year 8, 9 and 10 students, along with a number of Year 11 students, competed in the 2016 Australian Geography Competition. The competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence. I was also pleased to announce and present the following boys with their certificates at yesterday’s Assembly who were ranked in the top 1% of Australia in their year level: Oliver Papillo (Year 9), Max Ramm (Year 9) and Charles Huang (Year 10). Special congratulations are due to James Gunasegaram (Year 9) who came equal first in Australia in the Year 9 level of the Competition. Ms Penny Wood and Mr Ammar Haque adjudicated the semi-finals and Mr Ben Bishop and Mr Haque adjudicated the final. The boys handled themselves with aplomb and looked outstanding in their evening attire. They were perfect hosts to the girls from Fintona, PLC and Camberwell Girls’. Mr Joe Tierney, Ms Katrina Massey and Ms Victoria Papaioannou did a wonderful job organising the night along with the members of the Social Committee, which included Austin Yim, Brandon Lee, Matthew Chan, Hamish Monckton, Matthew Deayton, William Li, Mitchell Reid, Rowan Sandhu and Oscar Treacy. Well done to all Year 8 boys for a superb night. Run/Walk for Koala Kids On Wednesday we took to the local tracks in perfect conditions for our Run/Walk for Koala Kids. For one solid hour the boys completed laps of a set circuit, with some impressive distances covered by those who elected to run. Several boys ran in excess of ten kilometres during the event, including David Thomas, Jake Ford, James Backwell, Mathieu Ly (all Year 6), Jimmy Smith, Ty Beechey, Flynn Chable, Harrison Meers (Year 7), Tom Ireland, Tom Bowers, Taran Laurence and Hugh McGlone (all Year 8). The sausage in bread for lunch completed an excellent event. We now ask that the boys collect the money pledged from their sponsors and return it to their Form Teacher as soon as possible. My thanks to Mr Shaun Burke for organising the logistics of the day, and to Mrs Liz Ferentinos (mother of Arnie Ferentinos,Year 11, and an ambassador for Koala Kids) for sourcing our bread and drinks. The barbecue, to conclude the event, proved to be a huge success and I thank Mr Alfredo and Mrs Rose Di Censo (parents of Domenic, Year 9) for providing the sausages. Thanks also to Mrs Justine Elliott, Page 2 Contents Headmaster Cup Day Weekend Year 12 Examinations Grandparents’ Day Twilight Concerto Concert Mr Joe Tierney, Ms Elizabeth Grant and our enthusiastic team of parent helpers, who volunteered their time to prepare the barbecue lunch. House Swimming Carnival The House Swimming Carnival will take place next Friday, from 11.15am to 2.00pm at MSAC. Parents and spectators are most welcome at the event. The competition for the overall House Cup is fierce, and any of several Houses can still win, depending on the outcome next Friday. It certainly promises to be a great day of competition. Year 9 2017 Camp and Transition Information Morning Sport Report Run/Walk for Koala Kids Australian Maths Competition Long Weekend Junior School Summer Uniform Junior School Inter-House Athletics Carnival Flexischools Dates Ahead Sport Music Careers Calendar Last weekend saw the first round of summer sport for the majority of teams and, despite torrential rain leading to the cancellation of many outdoor matches, the results generally bode well for the season ahead. First Badminton got their premiership defence off to a great start, winning six sets to nil, with encouraging displays from Otto Zhao (Year 7) and captain Felix Wang (Year 11). All Second teams also recorded wins, demonstrating the squad’s depth, as did four of the five squash teams. The 7/8A Table Tennis squad stamped authority over the rest of the competition, dominating PEGS to win 12 rubbers, 24 games to zero rubbers, one game. Jayden Thai and Jackson Li (both Year 7) were named best players. First Basketball battled their way to a solid six-point win away at PEGS, well led all day by point guard Aden Stitz (Year 11) and a significant contribution from Jack Amling (Year 9). 10A Tennis also put in a strong performance in one of the rare outdoor games that wasn’t washed out. Loc Duong (Year 9) was named the best singles player, winning his match 6-2, as the team came away with a ten sets to two victory. The Third Gold squad also fought hard in what Mr Ian Mason described as an “arctic blast” to get within a few games of their opponents, but in the end narrowly fell short. Finally, although I may be slightly biased here, I have given this week’s ‘Play of the Round’ to two of my Second Basketball teammates, Adam van der Hock (Year 11) and Vinay Savur (Year 10). After a fast start, some poor offence and costly turnovers saw the team fall behind by ten points with around five minutes left on the clock. After a time out and rev up speech from coach Mr Martin, Adam led a comeback push, banking in a three-pointer with less than a minute left to cut the CGS deficit to just three points, then won the ball back with a great steal. After a narrow Liam Chester (Year 11) miss, Vinay rebounded the ball, dribbled to the corner and hit another three-pointer as the buzzer sounded, delivering a miraculous comeback, the teams drawn on 33 apiece. Jake Purcell, (2017 Captain of Games) Jamie Watson, Director of Sport Music After officially farewelling our Class of 2016 last week, it has been a pleasure to see next year’s leaders step up to their new positions. We were treated to a fabulous evening of music at our Twilight Concert this week, a small yet important event where students play alongside their teachers in small chamber groups. It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas in the Music School, as the Trebles and Altos from carol choir meet each morning to work on our Carol Service for Wednesday 7 December. For many of us, this event marks the beginning of our own Christmas season with families and friends – hearing the music every morning gives a wonderful sense of the special time of year to come. Congratulations to Harrison McEwen (Year 10), who is the inaugural winner of the Warren-Henley Woodwind prize, which will be awarded annually to an outstanding Woodwind student. Like the Elva-Allen prize for strings, the winner is determined by audition with an external examiner and boys from Years 6 to 11 are encouraged to enter. This prize has been made possible by the generous donation of past parent Mr Keith Warren, and is also named in honour of Mr Trevor Henley, our Director of Music 1988-2015. Well done to the many boys who have recently completed their AMEB exams. These are fabulous milestones in instrumental learning, and often serve as useful goals to work towards. I encourage recent examination candidates to find exciting new repertoire or tackle some improvisation, and most importantly to keep their good practice routine going.
