New Outlook February 2017 Second Baptist Church Open and progressive since 1833 Second Courageous Conversation To Be Held Saturday, February 4 On Saturday, February 4, from noon until 2:00, members and friends of Second, Third, Antioch, Southern Union, and Dayspring Baptist Churches will gather at Antioch Baptist for lunch and the second of our Courageous Conversations. First Courageous Conversation October 1, 2016 At our first conversation, held on October 1, fiftyseven people, including fifteen from Second Baptist, spent time together discovering things we had in common and then listening and talking about racial issues. It was a wonderful experience of community and learning how others see things. The goal in meeting for Courageous Conversations is twofold: 1) To create a safe space where necessary conversation can take place, and 2) To provide the opportunity to develop new and meaningful relationships Meet at 11:15 in our parking lot if you would like to carpool. Please let Pastor Steve or Larry Marks know if you plan to go. Our next Courageous Conversation is scheduled for Saturday, May 6. Everyone is invited to Mike and Bev Apple’s home on February 5 at 4:30 to watch the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons vie for the Super Bowl championship. The game begins at 5:30. Please bring an appetizer, side dish, or dessert to share. Meat and drinks will be provided. Join us for an evening of game watching, conversation, fun, and great food. Please sign up on the sheet at the Welcome Center if you can come. Pastor F. Delano R. Benson, Jr. will speak. Pastor Steve Mechem will also play a role in the service, which is sponsored by Second Baptist, Antioch Baptist, Southern Union Missionary Baptist, and Third Baptist Churches. February 4th – Movie February 19th — Bake Sale February 24th – Rescheduled Lock-in – Arrive at 6:30ish and pick up next morning at 10:30. March 4th or 5th – St. Louis Crisis Nursery Green Lake – We are tentatively looking at the week of July 16-22nd. On Inauguration Day, Pastor Steve Mechem read Christ’s Sermon on the Mount from the pulpit. After he was done, participants spent as long as they wished in silent prayer. Second Baptist’s Beatitude Windows Since Steve is doing a series on the Beatitudes, this seemed like a good time to resurrect a puzzle on our Beatitude windows from the February 2004 Outlook. Some of the clues are from the Beatitudes themselves (found in Matthew 5:3-10), and others are about the images the artist used to depict them in the windows. Note: The artist used different translations of the Bible for different windows. For help, go to the church’s website and click “About,” then “Worship,” then under “Photo Album,” click on “A Tour of Our Beatitude Windows.” Click on a window to enlarge it. Answers to the puzzle are on p. 6. From our pastor. . . Friends, February is designated as Black History Month. It has been so designated since 1976. Its roots, however, go back to 1915. Black historian Carter G. Woodson and the highly regarded preacher Jesse E. Moorland founded the first organization to study the contributions of African Americans to American history and culture. In 1926, the organization sponsored a national Negro History week in the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Over the next several decades many cities and college campuses celebrated Negro History week, and in the 1960s, Negro History Week became Black History Month. In 1976, President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month and called on Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” George Washington Carver John Lewis Malcolm X Jackie Robinson Crispus Atticus Chuck Berry Marian Anderson Booker T. Washington Katherine Dunham Sojourner Truth Toni Morrison Medgar Evers Dorothy Vaughn Colin Powell Marcus Garvey Frederick Douglass Dr. Condoleeza Rice Curt Flood Annie Malone Muhammad Ali Scott Joplin Langston Hughes Arthur Ashe Jesse Owens Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Harriet Tubman Rosa Parks Jackie Joyner-Kersee Thurgood Marshall Fred Shuttlesworth Neil deGrasse Tyson B.B. King Maya Angelou W.E.B. Du Bois Barack Obama and innumerable other famous and not-so-famous African Americans have made lasting contributions to their community and country. Spend some time this month learning about African American contributions to our society. As Black History Month is celebrated, our church has two opportunities to join the festivities: Our next Courageous Conversation is scheduled for Saturday, February 4 at Antioch Baptist Church. It begins at noon with lunch and will continue with conversation. We will strive to be done by 2:00 p.m. Joining the Conversation will be Dayspring, Antioch, Second, Third, and Southern Union Missionary Baptist Churches. If anybody wants to caravan over to Antioch, we can meet in our parking lot at 11:15. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 19 at Third Baptist Church. (Church parking is available at the back of the church on the Washington Avenue side). Second Baptist Church is serving as a co-host for the event. Worship will begin at 5:00 p.m. Anticipate a wonderful service of praise and celebration. Following worship, there will be a time of fellowship and refreshment. Plan to join us for this great event. “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Marcus Garvey Let’s take care of each other, Steve Solution to crossword puzzle, p. 3 S A M A R I T W O R I G H T E O D E A M R E S P I R I C I C R U C I F I U L A N R U S N E S S A T K I A T U A L N E E D A J R C X I O N T B P H A R P U R E I WEEKLY ACTIVITIES Sun 8:45 a.m. Choir practice 9:15 a.m. Church school Karen worship 10:30 a.m. Worship service 11:30 a.m. Coffee Fellowship 11:40 a.m. 2nd Sunday Choir Rehearsal Wed 9 - noon Friendship International Thurs 7:00 p.m. Choir practice UPCOMING EVENTS Feb 4 Noon Feb. 5 4:30 p.m. Feb 8 6:30 p.m. Feb 12 11:30 a.m. Feb 13 5:30 p.m. Feb 14 1:00 p.m. Feb 18 7:30 a.m. Feb 19 5:00 p.m. March 1 P E E I N H A R D T H C A E N N G D O M O F G O D A S K R E H O M F O R T E D B S A I S E E V S E O N N H E A R T Discussing Books with Friends On Tuesday, February 14, at 1:00 p.m., in the Community Room, Phyllis Westin will lead a discussion of A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman.
