WHAT TO EXPECT --
On Friday, May 30, 2014, Special Olympics Pennsylvania’s Philadelphia
program will partner with the School District of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Charter Schools for the 2nd
annual Unified Soccer Championship being held at Thomas Edison High School, located at 151 W.
Luzerne Street in Philadelphia. Opening Ceremonies will begin at 9:30 am followed by competition until
noon and the Championship game at approximately 12:30 pm.
The Championship matches will feature teams from 11 Philadelphia high schools from across the city
including: Abraham Lincoln High School, Frankford High School, Furness High School, George Washington
High School, High School of the Future, Martin Luther King High School, Northeast High School, Samuel
Fels High School, South Philly High School, Swenson High School and Thomas Edison High School. In
addition, students from four other schools will cheer on athletes as well as showcase other Unified Sports®
games like bocce! Approximately 200 athletes and partners will culminate months of preparation for these
Unified Games and display the “best of the best” during this year’s competition.
Special Olympics Unified Sports® is an inclusive sports program that puts athletes with and without
intellectual disabilities on the same team. This Unified Soccer elective course includes curriculum with
youth leadership components, anti-bullying elements and soccer training and competition. The course
provides greater access to sports for all students, with and without disabilities.
Visual Opportunities–
9:30 A.M. to 10:15 A.M. for Opening Ceremonies (torch run, athlete and
partner parade, speakers) and 10:30 A.M. through 1:30 P.M. for active competitions. Law Enforcement will
run in the torch into Opening Ceremonies to light the Flame of Hope.
Dr. Hite (Superintendent, School District of Philadelphia) will be speaking at the Opening Ceremony, along
with Matthew Aaron (CEO of Special Olympics PA).
Parking – Ample parking will be available onsite off of both Bristol and W Luzerne Street.
