No Sacrifice Is Too Much

No Sacrifice Is Too Much
Grandma
Hello you two, what are you up to?
Katie
We’re just counting up our pocket money. Me and Debbie are going up to the
shopping centre today.
Debbie
Yes Grandma, I want a new pair of trainers and Katie’s after some skinny jeans.
Grandma
Oh, that’s nice girls but have you bought your Mother anything, you know it’s
mothering Sunday, don’t you.
Katie
Is it Grandma? I don’t think I can afford a present for Mum and a pair of trainers.
Debbie
No, and I certainly can’t afford those skinny jeans if I buy a present for Mum.
Katie
Maybe we could just make her a card. That wouldn’t cost us anything.
Grandma
I can’t believe what I’m hearing girls. You would really begrudge your Mum a bunch
of flowers or maybe some chocolates?
Debbie
It’s not that we don’t want to buy Mum anything Grandma but if we do I’ll have to
sacrifice my trainers.
Katie
Yes and I’ll have to sacrifice my skinny jeans.
Grandma
Sacrifice! You two girls don’t know the meaning of sacrifice.
Debbie
Gosh Grandma your face is going very red you look really angry.
No Sacrifice Is Too Much
Katie
Have we upset you Grandma? Was it something Debbie said.
Grandma
Yes I am upset Katie. I’m upset with both of you.
Debbie
But why Grandma, I don’t understand.
Katie
Is it because we said we wouldn’t make a sacrifice for Mum?
Grandma
Yes Katie that’s exactly why I’m upset. Don’t you ever consider the sacrifices your
Mum makes all the time for you two selfish girls.
Debbie
What sacrifices Grandma?
Grandma
Don’t you think your Mum would like some nice new clothes instead of making do
with her old clothes just so that you and Katie can buy all those nice fashionable
clothes up at the Retail Centre. No your Mum always puts you two first.
Katie
I must admit Mum does dress a bit old fashioned sometimes. Maybe I could sell her
some of my old clothes when I’ve finished with them.
Debbie
Yes and I’ll give Mum my old trainers when I get that nice new pair.
Grandma
I’m speechless. What about the fact that your Mum goes out to work every evening
just so that you and your sister can have a nice holiday each year. Don’t you think
she’d rather stay at home and watch Coronation Street and East Enders.
Katie
I’ve never thought about that I just assumed Mum spent her wages on things for
herself.
No Sacrifice Is Too Much
Debbie
Yes make up and things like CDs and DVDs. Our friends’ mums are always going to
the hairdressers or getting their nails done.
Grandma
I honestly don’t think your Mum’s spent a penny on herself ever since your Dad was
out of work for a month.
Katie
You’re making me feel very guilty now Grandma. I’ve never really thought about that.
No wonder Mum always looks so tired.
Debbie
Yes, we’ve been really selfish haven’t we?
Grandma
Yes you have been selfish but it’s not too late to change your ways.
Katie
I’m going to buy Mum the biggest bunch of flowers possible after all who needs a
pair of skinny jeans.
Debbie
And I’m going to buy Mum the biggest box of chocolates I can find and those new
trainers can wait. I’m sure I can make my old ones last a bit longer.
Grandma
That’s much better girls, Mum makes sacrifices for you all year round, not just on
one day each year.
Your mum is prepared to make sacrifices for you because she loves you.
That’s how we know that God loves us too.
Katie
God Loves us?
Grandma
Yes, God loves us all. He showed us His love when He sent His Son Jesus to live with
us and He was even prepared to die on the cross, because He loves us so much
Debbie
Really?
Grandma
Yes, really! You see, we know how much someone loves you by what they are
No Sacrifice Is Too Much
prepared to do for you, just like your mum. And God’s love was shown to us when
He died on the cross for all our sins. Now that really is love.
Katie
Don’t worry Granma, I’m reading you. I’ve decided that I’m going to help Mum in the
home a bit more.
Debbie
Yes Katie, we could wash up and tidy up the house while Mum’s out at work in the
evening.
Grandma
See, you can be so thoughtful - sometimes. I think your Mum will be so proud of you.
Katie
And does that mean you won’t get angry with us again.
Debbie
Yes me and Katie were really scared when your face went so red. We thought you
were going to explode.
Grandma
Well I think you’ve learned a lesson so run along and let me get on with my baking.
Katie
Baking Grandma? Does that mean cookies for tea?
Grandma
Maybe girls, provided you are good to your Mum.
