PARENT CONNECT Volume:lll Issue: I AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2016 Ganesh Chaturthi : Dear Parents, We are glad to see our children grow and progress each day. We love to share what our kids are learning and doing at school. Parent’s teachers meeting are very important as they provide you the first opportunity to have 15 to 20 minutes of uninterrupted time alone with your child’s teacher. It may seem brief, but we are happy to say that our parents at The Learning Curve used this moment to establish a rapport and develop a common goal with the teacher that focused on helping their children have the best school experience. Teacher’s too introduced the parents to their teaching style, discipline and classroom policies which was an important aspect for our children’s holistic development. A main ingredient of the parent teachers meet was exchanging information with the teachers about your child’s academic progress and social achievements. That included everything from how well your children communicated with you about the activities they learnt and did at school. Our teachers came across beautiful experiences shared by the parents and were amazed to know that few children actually became teachers at home and ask their parents to be their students. Children sang rhymes, told stories and also played games just the way their teacher did. Our team would like to thank all the parents for motivating our teachers by sharing stories about their lil ones that came across as a reward for the efforts and handwork they have put every day to ensure their children enjoy at school. We have had lots of parents asking us whether we will take children out on field trips and we have responded to it with a big ‘YES’. This term we will be taking the children out for field trips. In the past month we had lot of fun celebration in which all of you enthusiastically participated. Cheers THE LEARNING CURVE Visit our website : www.learningcurveindia.co.in. Decorations done by the teachers make the children feel the days at school are different due to the new look given to it. School is fun for children with new scheduled to follow and yummy snakes to be served by our cooks, it creates an atmosphere of joy and happiness. Ganesh Utsav is a festival that we celebrated at all our centres. Following rituals and traditional ceremony gave a glimpse of Ganesh Utsav to our lil ones. Teachers enacted and narrated the story of Lord Ganesh’s wisdom and how he defeated his brother Lord Karthik in a race around the world for their children. With tasty ‘modak’ treats our children had a gala time. An interesting take away activity of making Ganpati was the highlight of the event for the kids. They loved making their own ‘GanpatiBapa’ and chanting ‘GanpatiBapa Moriya’. Here are few pictures of the festival celebration at our school where you can see the children and their teachers dressed up in traditional wear. . Each picture in the book ‘A Circle Here, A Square There’ brings out the angles, curves, and lines in objects both every day and unexpected. Artist David Diehl creates engagingly active graphic d e s i g n s : whether it’s the secretive Square of a wrapped gift, the surprising crescent of a moon, or the (nibbled) triangle of a piece of pizza, all the illustrations are striking and exuberantly colourful. Kids made exciting connections between the letters of the simple words on the page, the exciting images, and the common shapes of the world around them.Children loved the story and if you have the time do read it to your children again at home!!The concept of shapes and matching made children enjoy the process of learning math in an interesting way. At home There is nothing better that siblings bonding, getting to see your children share and care for each other is the most precious feeling for parents. Now we have something more innovative and exciting for them. Our little ones will all be enacting, roleplaying and also going for field trips. Yes!! Isn’t it exciting? Do not be surprised if your child asks Mumma, Pappa what do you do? The theme for this term is COMMUNITY HELPERS. So though the spot light is on Community (supermarket) children learnt in depth about how variety of things are grouped differently i n a supermark et to easy t h e customer. T o generate curiosity the teacher read the book ‘At the Supermarket’ by Anne Rockwell before their visit to the supermarket. They learnt to trade (exchange currency for good). Now next time when you are at the supermarket with your little ones… beware they know where to find their favourite chocolate and ice-cream. At Home Involve your children in shopping at the supermarket on your next visit. At this age children love doing things on their own. Visit to a supermarket is like a mini trip for them. Start with making a list and then let them help you pick up the material from the selves. This will help them identify different shapes and colours. makes the sound at the beginning of his name. Keep your mouth nearly closed and lips open – ‘nnn…’ to avoid adding “uh”. COLOURS AND CRAYONS In Math they learnt about mixing colours. In the colour world they move on to learn how to make different colours by watching a demonstration. We read the book ‘Colour Dance’ by Ann Jonas and children loved playing with ribbons and streamers of different colours. RECAP ACTIVITY We also enjoyed learning our ‘Days of the week’. A cute little kitten told us what she did each day. Do you know what fun we had? We played a memory game. Guessing what the kitten did each day made children think and know their days of the week easily.Ink who happens to sayi... i... I... Don’t they? For a moment let’s go in flash back and recall our childhood days. The thought of childhood brought a smile on our faces. Think of what fun would it be for our children to have colourful memories? This is an age where they learn to dream on what they want to be when they grow up. From an Engine Driver a pilot and exclamations like “Mummy, I think I want to be a Doctor”. Be ready to hear it all. Any profession can attract them at this age …and they dream of being just that. Yes they also change their ambitions …as quickly as a change of clothes…what fancies the Lil ones today changes quickly …whimsical dreamy eyed and full of adventure; Life is happening and fun when they l e a r n a n d g r o w. What they finally choose to become is the consequence of what they experience. Children at ‘The Learning Curve’ discover themselves through play. a r t i s t i c a n d l o v e t o e x p r e s s read a book about a traffic jam in the themselves. We learn about famous artists and their art wo r k . We r e a d a beautiful Story ‘ The Dot’ by Peter H. Reynolds where we learn that everything begins with a single dot. Ah interested what it is about…well let us give you a hint it is about a little boy who says he cannot draw and how his teacher encourages him resulting in a whole new learning for the children. It also introduces children to the technique of POINTILISM …what is that you say…a technique of colouring used by the famous painter George Seurat who use dots of colours to paint his art masterpieces!!! middle of the street ….hmm who started the traffic hold up…which was the first vehicle that got stuck becoming the second truck to get stuck…Read the book ‘20 Big trucks in Middle of the streets’ by Mark Lee with your child…we are reading it at the centre. (The book also helps children understand the concept of before and after.) LETTERLAND We are happy to say that MATH We strengthen the concept of I’M A PAINTER Let’s make it interesting for our numbers by playing with numbers children. We focus on occupations, a learning sequencing patterns, before and after and learning to rote count forward and backward from 1 to 20. How do you explain the concept of little different …step ahead of just boring community helpers. Our kindergartners are so much more! Our little ones love to doodle, draw and paint for hours together. They are kindergartners are now comfortable with the identification of letters in l o we r ca s e . Work on our balancing and body control while trying to enact a tree on a windy day…why don’t you try the scenario…role play At Home You can make your child balance a balloon on the plate by tossing in in t h e a i r, throwing a ball in a number grid and playing hockey with a broom … Isn’t it fun! Try to play it with your c h i l d re n i t wo u l d a d e l i g ht f u l experience. In Active learning they independently learnt to write letters from a to z in lower case and upper case. Paint and make beautiful pictures and portraits like little artist. They learn to sort things in different order and sequence them. . KIDS ARE IN MOTION Bean bags and parachute – Its Shadow dancing. We’re gonna’ play a game c a l l e d “Shadow Dancing.” All you have to do is follow me. Just watch me closely and be my shadow Can you move your body just like me? You will know all the songs that your children sing for you when you get a copy of our music book. Wow!!! The fun in Kindergarten is no less than the fun they had in playgroup and nursery class. It was 3 years ago when the lil ones entered ‘The Learning Curve’ a place away from home none other than their own school. Those nervous and anxious little babies settled with love and care from their teachers and strong support from our parents. They have now grown up and almost ready for formal schooling. At this age in Senior Kindergarten we are focusing on Math, Science and Letterland to prepare them for big school. LETTERLAND We are learning to read and understand the mechanics of words, blends with ‘l’. We learn how two letters come together to create new sound which is a combination of both their individual sound like ‘bl’ as in blue, ‘cl’ in clap, ‘fl’ in flap, ‘gl’ in glass and ‘pl’ in play. Yes!!! Mummy, Daddy I know all the words which ‘l’ (Lucy Lamp Light) makes with their consonant friends. The children at school learnt few sight words and they were happy to be able to read those words aloud. These were their first steps towards reading independently. At Home Give children a book, children magazine or any article with a pencil and allow them to find and circle all the sight words that they have learnt at school one by one and then let them count the total number of ‘The’ that they have actually circled. Isn’t it fun!!! Look what they have learnt. MATH Yes, math is much more than rote counting. We learn how to count forward and backwards, sequencing, matching pairs, sorting and much more. Counting is fun when we discover the funny words of the ‘Monkey’ in “Counting Crocodiles”. It was an interesting story where monkey spies a banana tree on a faraway island, but the only way to get there is to navigate the crocodile-infested waters of the Sillabobble Sea. That’s no problem when you’re a brave and clever monkey who can count to fifty and back! SCIENCE Our senses allow us to learn, to protect ourselves, to enjoy our world. Can you imagine what it might be like to live your life without any of your senses? The senses usually work together to give us a clear picture of the things around us. The human beings experience the world around them with their SENSE ORGANS. We learn how we taste, smell, see, hear and understand through touch. Children learn these little facts about science through activities and games. Children enjoyed exploring the facts about seeing through Eyes with a purpose of knowing them by doing an interesting activity where they prepared a parallax bird cage. On rolling it rapidly between their palms they chirped…Magic! Magic! Magic! All children were amazed. Learning through play dough activities also helped children know more about our own body.
