ERM Foundation 2011 Report to the ERM Community

2011 Report to the ERM Community
ERM is Giving Back Every Day
through the ERM Foundation
“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.”
– Sir Winston Churchill
President’s Message
Dear ERM Colleagues,
The ERM Foundation in North America experienced quite a few changes in 2011 that I am confident will
help to heighten the Foundation’s profile and sustain the Foundation for years to come. During
2011, under the guidance of Foundation Board member and ERM founder, Paul Woodruff,
we launched the Sustainability Fellowship program and awarded the inaugural award
to Mr. Jesse Randall for his entrepreneurial concept called EnergyBLOC. The launch
of the Sustainability Fellowship Program is the culmination of an idea fostered
by Mr. Woodruff and a select few key founding ERM Partners 10 years ago.
Many thanks to Paul’s leadership to advance this fellowship program.
Also in 2011, we drafted an updated strategic plan. In keeping with
ERM’s focus on sustainable business practices, the North America
Foundation’s updated strategic plan is more closely aligned with the
goals and initiatives of the operating company. We are confident
that this alignment will serve to benefit both organizations,
and will help raise the profile of both organizations as leaders
in Sustainable Business Practices and provide ERMers with
greater opportunities to support the Foundation’s good works
programs.
Two themes – Giving and Giving Back – weave through the
work of the ERM Foundation-North America. The synergy
between them is powerful and takes many forms during the
course of a year. It is a pancake breakfast where ERMers
gather to inspire campaign giving; it is a river clean-up or treeplanting event uniting ERMers in support of their communities;
and it is the construction of a bridge in rural Kenya connecting
4,200 people to year-round health care, education and clean water,
made possible by your generosity.
This report tells the story of your commitment to improve lives and
your pledge to minimize our environmental footprint. Together, we
are building a sustainable future for communities local and afar.
As I complete my term as Board President, I hand the gavel to Rob
Livermore with great pride in the work that we have all accomplished and
the lives we have bettered. I continue to be humbled and inspired by your
unwavering commitment to give and to give back.
With gratitude,
David T. Murtha, QEP
2010-2011 President, Board of Directors
ERM Foundation-North America

Inaugural Sustainability Fellowship Award
I
n June, the first-ever Sustainability
Fellowship was awarded. Jesse Randall
received $15,000 to continue work on his
winning proposal to develop EnergyBloc,
a sustainable business initiative that
proposes the sale of virtual ownership of
large, centrally-located renewable energy
installations which would reduce the
consumer’s electricity bill by 50 kilowatts
(kW).
Jesse is an MBA candidate at the Thunderbird
School of Global Management in Glendale, AZ and
is being mentored by ERM Partner and 2012-13
North America Foundation Board President,
Robert Livermore.
Jesse Randall
Applicant proposals underwent blind reviews by
an internal panel from the ERM sustainability
team, and finalist expanded proposals underwent
a blind review by an external panel of industry and
academic experts in the field of sustainability.
Sustainability in Action
A closer look at two projects committed to sustainable solutions
S
upported by a Foundation
grant this three-tiered plant,
herb and vegetable garden
captures rain runoff from
roofs, reducing the amount
of stormwater that enters the
New York City sewer system
and ultimately the Bronx
River. Created by youth from
one of America’s poorest
neighborhoods, this garden
is estimated to have filtered 55,000 gallons of water
in just four months. Through hands-on stormwater
management projects, traditional wooden boatbuilding,
and on-water monitoring programs, Rocking the Boat in
Bronx, New York is empowering youth through projects
that improve the health and biodiversity of the Bronx
River and revitalize the communities that line its banks.
T
oday, 115 women and their
families in Uganda, East
Africa pasteurize drinking water
and cook food using a solar
cooking reflector system and
a fireless basket. In addition,
these women have been
provided training to teach their
families and communities about
the benefits of clean cooking.
This grant award to Light Gives Heat is improving
health, providing local economic opportunities, and
supporting sustainable cooking solutions.
