Edward A. Bettencourt, Jr., Mayor
It is hard to believe that the month of June is upon us. It feels as though we just celebrated the 2017 New Year!
At the Senior Center we have been busier than ever. Each and every day I meet new people who come here for the very
first time. New comers are often surprised by the amount of classes and special activities that are held here. They are
also pleased to discover that they do not need to pre order lunch several days in advance. We are so fortunate to have
talented cooks on site preparing delicious meals to serve to our guests. And for those seniors looking for lighter fare,
our Café offers numerous choices and a monthly special. Over the last few months we have hosted some wonderful
events. Our first, but hopefully to become our annual Mother’s Day Tea was a huge success! I want to thank Friends
of the PCOA and Care One for sponsoring this terrific event. This spring we traveled to the Magical World of Disney
with the wonderful performance by the Forever Young Chorus and the Ladies Drill Team. I truly don’t know how it is
possible, but it seems that each year the performance is even better than the previous one, BRAVO! June is a special
time of the year for us, because we celebrate volunteerism at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. Each year
at the luncheon, over 300 volunteers and staff members enjoy each other’s company as we acknowledge the many
accomplishments during the year, working together in achieving our mission of providing services that keep Seniors in
Peabody active and engaged in the community.
We want to encourage those who have been thinking about coming to the Senior Center to do so. We also
suggest that for Peabody residents to check in the office to receive your blue card and an overview of our programs and
services. For those not from Peabody, but visiting from another community, please introduce yourselves and ask for a
tour. Each month we publish our newsletter Tips & Topics with important information from Social Services,
Transportation, activities, and current volunteer opportunities. For those needing additional support at the Center,
information is available from our Adult Day Health Program.
Much of what is offered at the Senior Center is at a very low cost or no cost at all. For example Senior Field
Day will be held on Wednesday, June 28th and this is a free event. As I mentioned, we have wonderful volunteers;
one in particular is Mark O’Hara who volunteers in the Wood Shop. He has recently designed a donation collecting
system for spare change. When you come to visit the Senior Center it is fun to watch your spare change travel down a
maze to a collection box. It is amazing to me when we all work together, how quickly spare change adds up to help
provide the many services that we offer. All donations, no matter how small are kindly accepted. Our Senior Center is
a very special and welcoming place with dedicated volunteers and caring staff members. We invite you to come and
join us. Looking forward to seeing you at the Center!
Fondly, Carolyn

THE SPEED LIMIT HAS
CHANGED IN PEABODY!
In an effort to make Peabody’s streets a little safer, a
speed limit of 25 mph has been implemented for ALL
city streets unless otherwise noted by an already
existing speed limit sign. This change has
been made in an effort to make our streets
safer for Drivers, Bike Riders and Pedestrians
alike. So BE AWARE and BE CAREFUL!
TICK SEASON IS HERE!
Lyme disease is a mysterious, chronic condition that
can lead to devastating symptoms, and a new study
suggests the ticks that spread it may be increasing
so watchful of ticks this year, as more are predicted to carry viruses.
Now, many are concerned about Powassan virus (POW), associated
with fever, vomiting, seizures & memory loss. About 1/2 of survivors
have permanent neurological symptoms and 10% of all cases are
fatal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Symptoms usually show up one week or a month after the tick bite.
No vaccines or medications are available to treat or prevent the virus
infection, the CDC reports. About 75 cases of POW virus disease were
reported in the United States, mostly in the northeastern and Great
Lakes regions, over the past 10 years.
The best way to protect yourself from Powassan is to avoid contact with
ticks by applying DEET repellents and staying away from wooded
areas. The CDC recommends parents actively check children,
especially hair, for ticks that causes Lyme disease. If you walk, run,
play sports, have pets and just like being outdoors, please protect
yourself at all times!

PEABODY COUNCIL ON AGING
JUNE 2017
This scam is actually very clever! Be very careful out there!
Beware of people bearing gifts.
You receive a phone call from a person saying that he was from “Express Couriers”.
(The name could be any courier company). They ask if you are going to be home
because there would be a package delivered requiring a signature.
They go on to say that the delivery would arrive in roughly an hour. Sure enough,
about an hour later, a uniformed delivery man turns up with a beautiful basket of flowers and a bottle of wine.
You inquire as to who the sender was. The courier replies he doesn’t know, he only delivers the package and
said that a card would arrive separately.
The courier explains that because the gift contained alcohol, there was a $3.50 delivery/verification charge,
providing proof that he had actually delivered the package to an adult (of legal drinking age) and not just left
it on the doorstep. This sounds completely logical and you offer to pay him cash.
He tells you that the delivery company requires payment to be by credit or debit card only,
helping keep a legal record of the transaction. He said couriers don’t carry cash…..
Your credit card is out by this time and the delivery man asks you to swipe the card on a
small mobile card machine, and you are then asked to enter your PIN number and a receipt was printed out.
All is good, says the courier.
UNFORTUNATELY FOR YOU, BETWEEN THIS DAY AND THE FOLLOWING MONDAY, $4,000.00
HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN FROM YOUR CREDIT/DEBIT ACCOUNT AT VAROUS ATM MACHINES.
WARNING: Be wary of accepting any “surprise gift or package” which you never
specifically ordered or if there is no proper identification of who the sender is.
Above all, the only time you should give out any personal credit/debit card information
is when you yourself initiated the purchase or transaction!

“It Only Takes A Moment”
It only takes a moment to whisper words of praise,
to thank God for the blessings that decorate your days.
It only takes a moment to lift someone in prayer who
needs to be encouraged and know that God is there.
It only takes a moment to share a little love with
someone who is lonely and lift their soul above.
It only takes a moment to be a friend in need, to spread a

Life can be so complicated that we forget to see that
It only takes a moment to be the best that we can be!
